We've Arrived

A new blog for a new home..............................seemed like a good idea.

So what sort of home is our cottage at the end of a lane?
Well, part is very old, but most is much newer and it has all the things we would choose for a home.... ..........a utility room and porch at the kitchen door, a downstairs loo as well as an upstairs bathroom, a wood-burner in the living room and a conservatory. Bedrooms for us and visitors and room for my craft things............and space for bookshelves of course.

The inside doors are all solid wood with Suffolk latches but the windows and outside doors have been replaced and are double glazed
There's a greenhouse and a garden with 4 vegetable beds that just need weeding.
Some fruit trees and bushes and space for more
A garage and a workshop for Col to keep all his might-come-in-handy stuff and wide open field views.
A small meadow surrounded with trees  will provide us with firewood and then we will plant more and fill up the space to make a wood.

Pity it's so scruffy and everywhere needs painting
and we haven't got a cooker until we get the pipework done for an LPG range.
One bedroom has an old random shower cubical in the corner, so  we'll need to find a builder to make us an en-suite.

There's enough to keep us busy for as long as we like and one of the first things we did after Storm Doris was to pick up all the twigs from the Ash tree ...........free kindling wood.
It felt right to be doing something with a purpose after a year marking time in town.

(Storm Doris also knocked a tile off the garage, pushed the Bay Tree over and broke its huge terracotta pot and put the electric and phone connection off at the cottage.........but not in town).

We've had questioning looks when we've told people we are moving out to the country when we don't know what the future holds health wise for Colin.

But I'd rather be here than in a small bungalow in town.

Thank you for all the best wishes for the move and thank you for putting up with my moans as we ploughed through all the hold-ups.

Hope you enjoy reading the new blog, which will probably be just like the old one!
Back Soon

  1. So exciting! I'm so glad things are working out. It sounds like a wonderful place. It must have been a bit of a shock going from the smallholding into town, now you're a little bit closer back to the smallholding and the things you've missed. I really wish you well in your new home.

At least it's still in beautiful Suffolk!

  4. At last, you made it. I know you will be much happier back in the countryside,. It's been a frustrating time for you both, I can understand why you felt the move into town was needed, now you can work through what needs doing to make the house your own in your own time.

  5. Welcome to your New Home! I can feel a big whoosh of energy and I am delighted for you. It sounds like home, and as long as there is plenty of room for that 'might-come-in-handy stuff' you are sorted.
Have fun and my very best wishes to both of you.

  6. I've been checking every day to see if you finally moved in. I'm so relieved for you. We had the same frustrations for three years before we finally moved last year. Like you, there were so many jobs to do but they got done over time. I'm sure this is the right move for you. If you are happy you can achieve anything!

  7. Finally! You both must be relieved and so happy to be in your new home. Lots of pictures please :)
    What are Suffolk latches?
I am usually a reader not a comment-er but 2017 is the year I change that.
Really looking forward to your new blog.

  8. It looks wonderful, it really does. Out in the country will be so much better for your mental health than in town and there's so many wonderful things to do in your space, your environment and your time. And - solar panels!

  14. Congratulations! It all sounds grand, even the bits where you mention a builder or decorating is needed, well that's okay because it will help make it your own.
It always makes me wonder why people ignore the fallen twigs to use as kindling? Why? As you say, free kindling.
I think you are wise, not knowing what the future holds, to be happy where you are rather than not in a town.

  18. Yessssss!!! You made it and it sounds wonderful. I think you've done exactly the right thing in moving to a quiet country cottage and away from town with its noise and stresses. Things that need doing will get done in time and as already mentioned, it all helps to make the cottage 'yours'. I wish you both many happy and healthy years together, enjoying the fresh air and relaxation of your new home. xx

  22. P.S. After 15 yrs. in an old, coastal home, we're also going to be moving. Our oldest son is leaving the nest, so we found a newer home several miles inland (Paso Robles, CA). 2017 seems to be a year of change!

  33. It's obvious from the comments above that lots of us have been holding our breath and praying that this time things would work out for you two.
I imagine that the next year will be difficult and stressful in many ways but you now have a home as opposed to a suitable shelter.
Enjoy the excitement. What joy collecting your own fuel!
It will be lovely watching the garden and field come alive as spring progresses and I'm sure we'll all be eager to see how it all develops. Sue

  48. Hi Sue,
I have been reading your ‘Frugal’ blog for a few weeks now getting to know you and yours, but this is the first time I’ve been able to comment as ‘Frugal’ wouldn’t let me comment at all and, trust me, there were quite a few comments I wanted to leave. I have loved reading about your small holding and your family. I was elated the weddings and the births of your beautiful grandchildren and I was immensely sad about Cols diagnosis. I have made lists of books that you have read and now I will try and find some of them ....... I am a prolific reader so your books have given me so many ideas for books I might not have picked up. I lived in Essex for most of my life, went to live in the States for 10 years and now live in Kent in a little village outside of Ashford. So I am now starting to read the next two years of your blog and looking forward to it. Sorry if I e bored you at all......

  49. And the first post I read in this blog is that you have moved and I am so, so pleased for you.....so much to do but I’m sure you will enjoy getting back into the swing of things and getting back to what you love doing.....
