Big ol' things

Last week there were lots of these, or something very much like them, flying over.
Chinook, Helicopter, Army, Transport

First they went one way and then they came back again.

Sometimes 1 or 2 or even 3 at once. They are very loud and I could hear them coming from a long way away but each time I was doing something and couldn't rush out to take a photo. So this picture is from pixabay free images.
It was all to do with joint maneuvers between two air bases in Norfolk and Suffolk.
I think they use this - which is a few miles from us- to navigate by, especially at night when it is lit up. We could see the top lights from the smallholding 30+ miles away - Suffolk is pretty flat!

I'm very fond of helicopters.
When the National Grid Helicopter, checking the High Voltage power line, flew over the smallholding I used to rush out and wave.!

In Ipswich we often saw the Police helicopter - I didn't wave to that one!

Simple pleasures!

  1. "Suffolk is pretty flat".... except when you cycle nearly everywhere lol.

  2. They occasionally do very low flights over Owl Wood which is exciting, but deafening! One is loud enough, but several at one time - best get some ear defenders!

  3. Have you any church towers near to you...they love to use those as markers too! x

  4. Love the idea of you running out to wave at helicopters! We get Chinooks here too, but they are too high up to wave at.

  5. We have Tornedo planes going over our house to and from Anglesey, I think, sometimes and you can surely hear them before the see them!

  6. How exciting! I love planes. We live quite close to Gatwick airport and you can get an app which, if you point your phone at a plane, can tell you where it is going, what height it is, what sort of plane it is etc. It even works for private light aircraft - pretty sure it wouldn't work for the military though! I hope those helicopter pilots waved back 😊

  7. Oooooh I love me a good chunky military helicopter. It makes my day if we get one over here.
I can't wait until June.....it will be the Cosford Air Show weekend at some point and we get a lot of the display planes flying over to get there.
One year we had a massive troop carrier appear quite low over the hill behind our house. It was the most magnificent thing I have ever seen and would have made a brilliant picture if I had taken my camera out-x-

    2. No just visiting, checking in on people who I often think about. Hoping and praying Col gets the 'all good' results he so clearly deserves. X

  9. We run out and wave to the "Hercy Birds" as my husband calls them (Army term for Hercules aircraft). They often fly low over our valley, using the metal bailey bridge across the river as a DZ (drop zone) point. We also get the screaming jets, which make your ears hurt, they're so loud.

  10. We have the occasional police helicopter, but we get more planes, I like to imagine where the people on board are going, what adventures they may have xx

  11. We get the air ambulance passing as we're quite near the local hospital, and also fighter jets pass over quite often as they are tested.

  12. We used to get the big Chinooks practising their manoeuvres in our end field when we lived in Oxfordshire. This was no problem but the night time landings made for a lot of noise.

Here we get lots of small nippy helicopters hugging the side of the hills as they check various things, much quieter and amazing to watch how close they seem to the land.

  14. My province is very flat as well. The standing joke among those that don't live here is that you can watch your dog run away for 3 days.

    God bless.
