Something Old

My late Mum stitched this tapestry many many (60+?) years ago. For most of that time it was rolled up in a cupboard until a friend of theirs offered to make a wooden frame and turned it into a fire screen for her.
After Dad's death and the house clearance my sister kept it for a while and then passed it onto me and here it is in use hiding the wood-burner for the summer.
On the left is a brass trivet made probably around the same time as the screen. Real Dad was a machine fitter at ICI in Stowmarket and would have made it there for their new home.

For the first time in many years we have a proper wood mantle  and once the living room has been painted I shall find some more things to display on it.

Thank You for comments about my painting and decorating. We did all our own decorating in the past but usually shared the work between us with Col doing the ceilings and woodwork and me doing walls, so doing it all myself is a bit of a new achievement.

Back soon I guess
Sue

  1. How lovely to have things your parents made in your home and looking just right, as if they were meant to be there.

  2. What a lovely story. I'm so pleased for you that you have these things, true heirlooms to pass down the family. They look so right together, as if everything in the setting was made for each other.

  4. Really love the tapestry. I used to do a lot of counted cross stitch, but rarely find time now, and I miss it. We have a baromete hanging in our hall which belonged to my grandparents, and is very special to me.

  5. Looks as though it was made for your fireplace, lovely to have things from your mum. Well done you decorating, we still have a lot od boxes to unpack, no point doing all the kitchen ones till we have it replaced, trying to get kitchen firms, carpenters is a headache. I phone, leave messages and most never get back, others are too busy! But we'll get sorted eventually!

  12. Lovely way to use your mum's sewing, often after I finish mine it's rolled up in my basket for ages.
