Charity Shop Finds Put to Good Use

Last week Colin, his brother and sister were in town sorting solicitor regarding his Dad's will so I popped into a couple of charity shops and found these. Couldn't believe my eyes...a Persephone Book that I hadn't got and just £1, I think I was so excited at all the books being £1 that I got carried away and bought Corpus which I've already read but it was so good I want to re-read before he does the next in the series and Elizabeth Luard - A Cook's Year in a Welsh Farmhouse and I have a feeling I've had that from the library years ago. I now pick up any cheap preserving jars as they are so expensive new and these two little ones were 99p each.

At home I looked through the Welsh Farmhouse cookery book and yes, I had seen it before but I've found a new home for it as another  blogger mentioned they we looking out for a copy. The jars are already in use holding the home grown chili peppers that were dried in the dehydrator - they'll be presents for the hampers. The Persephone book (It was Marghanita Laski -Little Boy Lost) has joined the others on their special shelf and, before I re-read it, Corpus will probably be loaned to a friend who reads much the same as I do.

Thank you for plum comments yesterday, haven't had a chance to try out the new sheltered area yet - we had sunshine and showers all day yesterday and very, very windy.

Back Monday

  4. Some excellent buys. I've not seen that book so will keep an eye open at local car boot sales. I am inclined to buy preserve jars when I see them too, for the same reasons as you. I also get given Bon Maison and other jars for my preserve making. Bigger storage jars get bought for putting opened packets of comestibles in (I try to keep away from plastic for storage where possible).

  7. I have just read an article about Elizabeth Luard - she used to be so well known and I had not heard of her for years.

    1. Her other book _ Family Life was a good read - many years ago now. This more recent one is mainly recipes through the year.

  8. A Cooks Year sounds nice! I have so many cookbooks I really don't need another. Doubt it's in a library in the USA! I like jars as well, especially blue ones. But I have many clear ones, almost too many. I'd give you some if you were closer! I bought some peaches yesterday and will make a crisp out of it today, freeze others, eat a few too. Happy weekend!

  9. More good finds Sue. Preserving jars are expensive and even the humble jam jar costs more pennies than I think it should so I just wash and re-use any I have, which is probably what most people do. xx

    1. I re-use jars too but buy new lids from a local packaging company.Which reminds me that I must ask family to save jars for me - running low. I love to use storage jars if I'm making something special to give away.

  10. I've got 'A Cooks Year ...' it's a really good book. I think she used to write in Country Living magazine didn't she.

Brilliant finds there, you do seem to be doing well recently :-)

  12. I just finished Little Boy Lost. I bought it after seeing it here and reading another commenter's thoughts on it. It's been sitting on my bedside table. I thought it was so heartbreaking that in the light of all the heartbreaking things happening in this world right now, I set it aside unread for a while. This morning, I got up at 4 am to skype with my daughter. I went to bed early tonight, and as my husband is watching a football game, I thought to read myself to sleep. I picked up that book for no other reason than I had started it already. My heart broke a hundred times. "It's Binkie!" Ugh. Tears. The happy ending was so unexpected! What a wonderful story. I'm glad that I stuck with it, or I would have never gotten to the happy part. And in a strange way, I realized it was a metaphor. This world is filled with sad, sad stories right now, but maybe I need to expect the happy ending! Thanks for bringing this book to my attention!
