Autumn

Some say Autumn doesn't start until the Autumn Equinox on 22nd September but  meteorological speaking Autumn starts on 1st September and as it's about halfway between I've put my recent purchases on the Autumn mantel- piece.

Ta Dah

,

The wooden fruit from the big carboot sale, a giant fir-cone  bought for £1 from the church sale-sitting on a curtain ring and the lovely colours of the swag - (not real leaves! -that was my one new purchase from ebay). A little jug with Autumn leaves was 50p at the small car boot and at the right hand end is a pottery acorn that one of the children made at school many years ago. It was a bedroom doorstop at the smallholding and I'd forgotten all about it until I looked in the dining room cupboard for something else for the Autumn display. Finally a mini swag of hops, still green at the moment. These were from the car park at the Emmaus charity shop in Ipswich. I remembered seeing hops there last autumn so we called in on the way to hospital, sadly no hoppy smell at all and they might go mouldy instead of brown in which case they will be chucked out.

Also in Autumn mode we finally got across the fields  to pick blackberries from along the old railway track bed.
11 bags have gone in the freezer and more went into two crumbles with windfall cooking apples from our tree.
Nothing says Autumn like a Blackberry and Apple Crumble.

Thank you for comments about things I don't buy, sorry I didn't get to reply as we were out all day. Also welcome to a new follower.
I take comment moderation off and the weird comments from somewhere in Asia are back again. Oh well, deleting them keeps me busy I guess.

  1. gorgeous! I love a hint of autumn in the house. I'm plotting on starting a little decorating later this week, but want to buy a few bits first.

Ooh, yes, blackberry & apple crumble, pure autumn in a dish!

  3. It it is really Autumnal. The decorations look so cosy. My blackberry stock is really good this year. They seem much bigger than normal. Must have been the wet summer we had.

  4. Lovely autum mantel decorations. Lovely Grey Day posted the Byrds singing Turn, turn, turn and it too seemed very apt for this autumnal morning. Catriona

  5. Simple but most attractive. We are having a massive crop of blackberries on our holding. We planted a cultivated thornless variety about three years ago.

  6. A self confessed Autumnophile here. I love your mantel shelf. I always look to feel Autumn in the air, it has a certain smell, a certain timbre to the energy, and a change in the quality of light. I have noticed these changes seem to come earlier each year, and this year they were present before the end of July.

  7. I have had a few weird comments in English plus a few Asian comments, I translated the comments which was just a jumble of words, so I never published them. Love your display.

  8. What a really lovely display. It looks great. I thought autumn started early this year - definitely a feel of it in August, and tbh, I felt it had "turned" during the last week of July. Just like you can get spring early, so you can get autumn sneaking in . . .

  11. Thank you everyone above for comments, we've been and got more blackberries and some were already past eating - a very short blackberry season this year and windy weather forecast so I've picked some apples too.

  12. We were picking blackberries in July, the early hot weather ripened them early. Love the mantle display, my Danish friend always has seasonal displays.

  15. I love your mantelshelf, Sue! And that little jug is perfect with those autumn-coloured items! You have encouraged me to look out some new things with which to decorate my mantel, copper lustre and such like. I am beginning to like autumn better than I used to! It's not the colours, it's the knowledge that winter follows as day follows night, and I detest the dark, grey days when it never seems to get light. But I just love how you have decorated your mantel, it's beautiful.

  16. Thank you everyone for more lovely comments. Doing something like the seasonal mantle is all because of the wonderful world of blogging. I look at the colours and they make me smile

  18. The oh-so-wonderful old wooden mantle certainly gave you a head start on this lovely creation. I so love fall, and have already spotted orange leaves on a tree in the valley.
