Out Visiting

On Monday we visited friends who live in a village in Essex. It a village that's on the tourist trail but I'd never taken any photos there of the things which visitors go to see. So remedied that this time

The windmill in the top photo is undergoing maintenance and there were gates around the side which is usually photographed, so had to take this from the green. There are numerous picturesque cottages and then at the bottom of the hill is the pond/river with the very old road bridge. The water was  high, but not quite running over the sluice gates. After heavy rain this often floods so frequently appears on the local news. The Tour of France Cycle race  went through here in 2014.

There were more people there that day than on Monday!

  1. I'm familiar with this Essex village which is very pretty. In fact there is a photograph of it in a well known book, The Making of the English Landscape by W.G. Hoskins, taken in the 1950s and the view today is unchanged apart from a few extra parked cars. I went there once to take a photograph from the same spot.

    1. They have problems with motorbikes roaring through and meeting on the green - a very busy village now

  2. I went to look in the book Philip mentions - I have a copy too - and it is certainly largely unchanged.

    1. They are having problems because the bridge needs replacing but they can't decide how to do it without spoiling the scene. It's very busy nowadays

  3. I'm not familiar with Essex but my husband's family came from that part of the country and when I have visited all of East Anglia, I just love it, those wide open spaces, the lovely villages, and the big skies. Thank you for posting such lovely photos, Sue.

  6. I think this Essex village may be the one I saw featured once in a Sunday supplement as the most picturesque village in England.
(Must be a while ago, as I never get a Sunday paper - it would have been bought by my late husband, so at least 8 years ago!)

  7. I have only been there once and it is very beautiful, we had actually been to a craft fair at Feering and stumbled upon the village later that day.

  8. My husband lived in the next village before we were married so we spent a lot of time here and it has been a favorite spot ever since. It is also where we bring visitors from abroad. They all love it.

  10. Why so secretive about the name of the village? Is it some sort of guessing game we are part of?

  11. Ah if we are guessing how about:
Combine a small bird, a financial company and something you plough.....well some people plough, around here they are no toll types.
