Pear Harvest

We've had more pears from the two small trees here than we ever got from the three larger trees at the smallholding.
The pears from the early tree were eaten or frozen a few weeks ago but the windy weather has been knocking pears from the later tree at the rate of 3 or 4 a day. So we decided to pick them all off and prepare them for the freezer.
I thought they were Conference but now I'm not sure as they are ripening too quickly and they are quite plump.
Gorgeously juicy and 4 bags of peeled and cored pears have gone into the freezer. That, sadly, is almost the last of the fruit from the garden. Just a few small late apples left on the family tree. I think Autumn Raspberries must go on the wanted list.

Back Tomorrow

    1. I've got to say I totally agree. My husband loves Bosc pears so when they are in the market, I'll pick some up for him. They always taste mealy to me.

  3. We only have fruit on one of our 3 young pear trees - about 4 pears, and right at the top out of reach (this is going to be a BIG tree I think! no dwarf rootstock on THIS one). We will have to wait for them to fall . . .

The Autumn Raspberries here are still producing. A wise move to get some. I can probably send you up some rooted youngsters if you like.

  5. Our mini pear did nothing this year but it was moved last year and got caught by a frost so fingers crossed for next year!

  6. We have enjoyed late raspberries, but I can't stand pears. Would love room for fruit trees.

  7. I must say they look rather like Conference but then, as you say, there is the odd plump one.

  8. Look like Conference to me too! Autumn raspberries are perfect to extend the season of fresh fruit. They crop well.

  9. I'm still picking raspberries, and picked quite a lot of strawberries a few days ago! Not bad for grey, wet, Lancashire :)

  10. I love pears, Sue. They are such a versatile fruit. Can't grow them here so you are lucky to have them in your garden. Meg:)
