I Saw The Flying Scotsman.................

......................................but only got photos of the carriages!

I popped down to Needham Market for the Saturday car boot sale and then planned to go into the little town to the big Hospice charity shop.
But when I got round the corner and under the railway bridge there seemed to be an awful lot of traffic and  people all stood looking at the railway line.
Then I remembered Col saw on Facebook that the Flying Scotsman was passing through, so I squeezed into a parking space and joined in with all the people with cameras.
It was gone in a flash and all I got was the carriages!

The engine is in there somewhere - you can see the smoke!

and then I went home! Without bothering to go to the charity shop as the roads were still jammed up.

It was a morning for trains because a  bit later we spent a while sorting out a smaller railway

I've collected a huge box of brio and brio type railway from car boot sales and the lot above is what will go down to Jacob (and his Daddy!) for his  Christmas present. It's just a  simple layout  with a tunnel, engine shed and hump-backed bridge as he's not yet 2 years old. We can send more complicated bits like viaducts down later. There is still plenty left here for when grandchildren visit and I'll keep an eye out for any more I see going cheap.

Our Son and DIL are visiting the Surrey family soon so will take everything down for us before Christmas.

I don't know what the weather was like where you were yesterday afternoon, but here by golly it was wet, cold and very, very windy! We hunkered down, read, watched some rugby, some tennis and watched some of one of our favourite DVDs. We rarely watch a DVD and only possess  a few, but haven't looked at this one for a couple of years. The weather was so dire  I even had an extra frothy coffee! Then Strictly Come Dancing  of course - are you enjoying it this year? can't say I'm that impressed with any of the celebs. The thing that cheers me is Elaine's weekly STRICTLY POST  and looking online on Sunday morning to see the strictly spoiler about who was knocked out, which saves the suspense of the Sunday night programme.

A Wartime Winter and Summer [DVD]

Thank you for the ideas for using the lovely cross stitch cards. I'll find somewhere to donate them where they will be used.

Back Soon

    1. We don't see them on the feeders regularly but always in the hedges around

  2. Oh, Sue, what a shame you didn't see the Flying Scotsman! Well you did see it, but your camera didn't, ha ha. We have a steam train service operating here in South Devon, along the coast and then inland across country to Kingswear and passengers then alight for Dartmouth, the only old GWR station without a train track, as you get their via the passenger ferry.
Love your new header photo, that is gorgeous!
We do sometimes watch DVDs, indeed I've just bought The Collection which we are enjoying very much. And I might even buy the original Howards End with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson after watching last night's new drama (ruined once again by excessively loud music, all of it totally unnecessary apart from the scene at the Beethoven concert. Do these programme-makers never learn that we don't want voices drowned out?)

    1. Long time ago when children were small we had a holiday staying in our caravan at Stoke Gabriel with a hired Beach hut at Broadsands. We went on the Dartmouth ferry but couldn't afford the rail trip but watched the trains from the hut. Crabbing at Stoke Gabriel was a favourite thing to do

    2. Stoke Gabriel on the River Dart is lovely, isn't it, Sue? And Broadsands, which is an ideal beach for children.

  3. Oh loving Strictly, Sue. Debbie and Alexandra are amazing and I was dying of laughter when Anton and Ruth did a version of the dance from Victor Victoria. Can't wait for Blackpool.

    2. I felt like that with Victoria Pendleton the year she was on and I didn't like Caroline Flack from the get go the year she won so I know what you mean.

  4. Love your new header, I was chuffed when we had the long tail tits visit us a few weeks ago, I do hope they come back. We have the Gloucestershire Warwickshire steam railway here, we had a day out on the steam train after we moved here, it was a lovely day.

    1. Now I know how to replace the header easily ( Shrink to fit button is the key) I shall be changing it more often.

  5. We don't watch any of the Strictlys, Talent Shows ie X-Factor and so on, nor do we watch any of the Bake-offs. I think it's because of all the hype and hysteria that goes with these shows, they seem to dominate a weekends viewing. Not that there's anything worth watching these days.

I remember quieter sedate shows like Come Dancing, Opportunity Knocks, etc. We can't do with hysteria these days.

    1. We don't watch any of the other so called reality type shows but enjoy Strictly for the professionals dancing an it cheers the dark nights between September and Christmas

    2. I am old enough to recall Come Dancing and Television Dancing Club, and Opportunity Knocks, and taht programme with Michael Miles and his Yes/No interlude, but my guess is if they were shown today we'd find them very boring and third rate. I enjoy Strictly (although we hit the mute much of the time to save our ears from the screams of the crowd, but they're obviously having fun - or they've been told to scream!) I don't care for what Giles and Mary, in their book Diary of Two Nobodies, refer to as "shiny floor television" (which is self-explanatory) - all those X-factor and Britain's Got Talent (or thinks it has!) programmes. But Strictly is fun, and the costumes and make-up are amazing. I agree, Sue, it's ideal for the dark Saturday nights between September and Christmas.

  7. We bought our son a Brio railway set from the Early Learning Centre when he was small and he loved it. I am sure hours of fun will be had with the one you have bought (and the extra pieces squirrelled away).

We watch Strictly here, but not from the get-go and came in about half way through this time. When I fail to recognize ANY of the celebs apart from Debbie McGee, some of the attraction goes.

    Love the new header.

  8. They have a train set etc that fits with Brio I think at Liddle this week. Love your header. None of those in our garden, but they are up the lane.

  9. My son loved trains when he was little. Such a great gift! He would spend hours playing with them. Great that you could find them

  10. RE those pretty cross stitches, what about making them into hanging tree ornaments on a Grandchild Friendly Christmas tree ?

Just back them with red/green/checked fabric or maybe a Christmas pattern and fill with wadding/batting.

Safe for small hands and as you've said there are 17 of them they would fill a tree nicely.

We used fabric stuffed decs on our tree for our handicapped child over 20 yrs ago.

  11. I do like strictly, all that glitter and sparkle! Very few that I am really liking this year though, have to agree with that. No idea who I'd like to see win yet.

I forgot the Flying Scotsman was here at the weekend.
Yes, very windy yesterday. I spent some time up my ladder, faffing with fairy lights again!

  12. Love the header.
Your DVD looks intersting. I love those programes like the Edwardian Christmas and Wartime Christmas with that lady who is a historian but I don't know her name.

  13. My grandchildren still play with the brio train track and trains that I bought for my son's first birthday. He is now 38.
