Strange Times Wk 6 Post 1

Very excited to see my sister-in-law commenting on my blog, unless there is someone with the same name out there. I love it when people I know read and comment. If I had a friend or relative writing a blog it would be fun to read. (Although I now have friends who write blogs but I didn't know them before!)

Saturday was a cold, gloomy day with a bit of rain but not enough to do much good for the fruit trees and bushes.  I hardly stepped out of the door at all and watched my birthday present DVD of Midway, which is the 2019 film look at what happened in the Pacific after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941. I've seen the film from the 1970's several times on TV and now want to see it again so I can decide which was best.....

Swallows or Housemartins returning have been mentioned on some blogs, no sign of them here yet, the cold east winds we keep getting are probably pushing them further west  but out cycling last Thursday I spotted the first Orange Tip butterfly and then two small Blue butterflies - presumably Common Blue. I've been increasing my cycling distance each time I've been out so that on Sunday I was able to do the 6 mile loop around all the parts of the village. Next I'm going to try the 3 and a bit miles to the community shop in the next village. I can go one way and come home by another little road to make it more interesting.

My hair was driving me nuts as it gets so heavy when it gets too long so thank goodness I kept the clippers after starting going to a hairdressers. A quick buzz with a 5 comb and there was a big heap of grey/white/black hair on the floor, although I missed a bit at the back  oh well!
When Col cut my hair all the time it was always the 6 comb but having been used so much it developed a tendency to fall off mid cut - which was one of the reasons for starting to visit a proper hairdresser. Heavens knows what Kirsty will think of the mess I've made of my hair when eventually she is allowed to open her little shop again.
We did another Zoom meeting with 4 houses and all the grandchildren yesterday, it was lovely to see them again. Son had written a list for a scavenger hunt for the children.

That was my weekend and now here we go into week 6 of  Strange Times and week 5 of  lock-down. Must go shopping one day this week, that will be exciting but frightening at the same time and I need to pick up prescription too......are fish and chip shops open? - I usually get my cheap pensioners meal when I go and pick up my tablets

Kirstie Allsop has got a crafting programme on starting this evening at 5pm for everyone stuck at home, hope the ideas she has aren't too expensive. How glad I am that when I sorted the craft stuff I kept all the cross stitch materials. The frog got finished and I'm doing a couple of little bits that go onto  tea-pot shaped cards.

My favourite colour tulips are the latest to open and a bunch are now indoors

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. I have a good friend in Scotland who blogs, we both started at the same time, 2008, when we were in Leicester. We've enjoyed following each others lives thru blogging now we're miles apart. I love it when I meet bloggers in person. Actually at the moment, I love it when I meet anybody in person these days, even at a 2metre distance

  2. Lovely that your family are able to keep in touch via your blog too. Some of mine are in touch on Facebook, which helps, not sure if they go to my blog, although I have several friends who follow it.

I am smiling at your haircutting problems. My son has a beard and gave himself a buzz-cut with the beard trimmer recently - he looks like he's channelling Jason Statham now!

Well done with upping your bike mileage - it will be a great help when you can cycle to the community shop. Ours is 3 miles away too, but unfortunately involved a very steep side-of-the-valley hill which is definitely a bit of an ask on foot, let alone a bike!

Love your x-stitch. I may sit under the rose arbour and do some of mine today, as a change from quilt-making.

  3. Have you tried the 2p in the vase for your tulips Sue? It kept mine upright and fresh for a lot longer.

I am so pleased I brought a lot of wool From Attic 24 and I am going to have a go again after the stroke with my sewing machine which should be fun.

  6. I have loads of crafts as well, helps keep me happy. I have a couple of things I need to purchase to finish things, I did not realise how often I pop to the village for bits and bobs. Learning something new has helped, but I still need to look at my stash and use some of it.

  7. What a coincidence, I cut my fringe this morning, it looks okay considering I'm so out of practice. Alan offered to give me a number 4 cut using his trimmer, but I decided against it. I don't have lovely thick hair like you, so I think I would look pretty bald if he did that!!

  8. The tulip is so pretty.

Ha, I'm laughing about the haircut, because I got Violet to cut my hair last week. She sliced off a good four inches, and I am really thrilled with the result. I've labelled her my personal hairdresser, but she's not impressed with that, apparently it's too much pressure!

I've seen a lime green butterfly here recently. Never seen one that colour before!

Glad you had a good birthday. Oh, and no, I don't think chip shops are open.

  9. Maybe I'll take up the scissors today and try to give myself a quick clip.
I have a date three times a week to Zoom with youngest granddaughter. She's become quite possessive with the time slot and doesn't like her mom talking to us during it. She's tells daughter "they're my Nana and Papa not your Mommy and Daddy".

  10. The cross stitch is lovely. I still need to find one to do but nothing is catching my eye. Great idea of your son's to come up with a scavenger hunt. I've got images of weird and wonderful things on the list to keep the children occupied so the adults can all have a conversation in peace lol. It's been lovely weather for bike riding hasn't it. xx

  12. That is a beautiful close up of the tulip! It is hard to get such a good close up photo. You are doing great with your cycling. Gradually increasing your distance is the way to do it and you are getting such good exercise. I love cycling and even got a new bike a few years ago and then I had knee surgery and that has made it difficult. I still hope to get back on my bike though.

I understand what you said about it being exciting but frightening at the same time to go shopping. It's wonderful to get out of the house and see other people but then you get hit with that fear of coming in contact with the virus plus it is so strange seeing everyone wearing masks. All the restuarants are closed on the inside here but at some you can still pick up food to take home.

Thanks for commenting on my blog today Sue! You take care of yourself.

  13. Your tulips and cross stitch are beautiful. My hair is driving me made so I bought hair slides when I was in SB. Looks daft but more comfortable. Fish and chip shops around here are open. Last two weeks we had them to cheer DB up. I do click and collect. I order and pay on line then they are ready when I get there and just handed over all ready packed up.

  14. It must have been a time for haircuts. I trimmed my fringe this morning but am lucky to have curly hair so straightness doesn't matter!

I also saw a swallow, an orange tip and two copper blues so they're not far away Sue.
