Recent boot sales involved lots of looking but not much buying (good!) Firstly Needham Market on Saturday - not many people selling as rain was forecast yet again.
I found a pretty silver Saxifrage for £2 which will go into one of the bowl shaped pots on the plant stand and the cheese grater (50p) I needed for grating the wax blocks to make some wax-wraps
The Sunday Car Boot at Stonham Barns was busier than it's been for several Sundays, there was bright sunshine early which must have drawn out the sellers. I bought this big new holdall to replace something similar that I used for clothes during the weeks in holiday lets as I don't possess a suitcase. I crammed so much weight in the old one that the handles broke. The old one had been Col's hospital bag - always half-packed right ready for all the trips he had in ambulances - so it had been around for several years.
Also bought a small punnet of gooseberries for £1 (mourned the smallholding days when I picked lbs and lbs of gooseberries to sell!) to go in the freezer to add to the strawberries for better setting jam. I found a small oblong terracotta planter - meant for the plant stand but it looked all wrong beside the round pots so maybe not.
(must do something about the weeds on the patio!) |
Finally (said I couldn't resist craft bits!) I picked up these for 50p each. Each page in the pad of Hunkydory has die-cut card toppers and extra bits that fit just right on the pack of 20 cards - which are an unusual size.
Some good finds. I'm sure that terracotta pot will look lovely planted up and set against the wall or something.
ReplyDeleteCard making is something I've never been drawn to but glad you found some useful bits. Cards are SO expensive to buy. I like to buy ones with lovely views or gardens on for friends' of family birthdays and have discovered a wonderful selection at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre.
Trouble with the trough is that it's very small so would be lost on the ground but just looks all wrong on the plant stand.
DeleteHow lovely to see a Saxifrage. They seem to have fallen from favour. My rockery was once full of them. Looks a sturdy, healthy little plant.
ReplyDeleteI've planted it up with lots of stones in the pot and shingle on the top so hope it will think it's on a rockery!
DeleteYou did so well! I particularly love the holdall - definitely my colours and it looks good and sturdy. A great find.

I was so cross when the handle broke on the old bag as it was so big and useful - this is a good replacement,
DeleteThe Hunkydory card toppers were a good buy and I am sure the trough looks lovely planted up. I went to my sisters for a few days in Huntingdon and brought a dark red Penstemon it was £2. it was a big plant so clean no weeds in the pot.

There are some lovely big Penstemons on one of the plant stalls at the car-boot - I'm tempted!
DeleteSome good bargains there. I hate car boots but must go to one sometime to see if I can find books to use.
ReplyDeleteYou might be lucky - there again you might only find rubbish!
DeleteGood craft buys; I think those Whopper Topper pads are about £9.99 each.
ReplyDeleteI love the little trough. How about miniature tulips for next spring?
The toppers have interesting designs and will make good cards
DeleteNice little haul of goodies. Must have been an enjoyable morning.
ReplyDeleteJust an hour each morning - I like to whizz round and go home for breakfast!
DeleteYou really have an eagle eye for bargains Sue - one of these days I expect to see you on Antiques Road Show with something worth thousands whicj you picked up for pence.
ReplyDeleteVery unlikely that I'd ever find something valuable as I'm only looking for things that will be useful for me - there are too many dealers always looking for the treasures!
DeleteI've just been topping and tailing lbs and lbs of gooseberries from the garden so I know that feeling - we left behind a Brambley apple tree when we moved house years ago and it still feels odd buying little bags of them.
ReplyDeleteI think I shall be begging for windfall apples so I can make chutney - I will really miss my apple trees
DeleteIt's hard buying fruits and veggies when we used to grow so many for ourselves isn't it. But it's also nicest to support local growers and sellers, so you're still doing your bit ... even if it does cost you a bit more at the moment.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that little trough would look good planted up with some little Tete a Tete daffodils to stand on your porch for Spring. You could always stand it on a brick or two to raise it up a little bit.
I'm not enjoying buying fruit and veg thats for sure.
DeleteThose card blanks&envelopes were a great find!
ReplyDeleteI was very restrained as there were lots of craft bits on one stall
DeleteYou are lucky to always find useful items at Boot sales. Fresh fruit and veg is important to me too and buying from others is okay but home grown, as you state, is even better. In time, your new raised beds will be producing. Will you add fruit to your growing plans?
ReplyDeleteYou've found some great bargains there. There don't seem to be any car boot sales round here. Herbs in the trough, and placed near the kitchen, maybe? xx
ReplyDeleteYou are such a wise shopper and you always pick up useful items. I love that bag and it looks like it will hold a lot. The oblong planter is very nice too and will look good in many different places.
ReplyDeleteI like the sound of the gooseberries in with the strawberries and was going to ask for the recipe, but then looked in your recipes from a Suffolk Kitchen and found it.
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem with weeds in my patio, but don’t want to put anything down to kill the weeds as I don’t want to hurt the hedgehog visitors. I am sure there must be some kind of garden tool I can buy to use.
this weekend im informed we are going to a huge auto jumble , not my idea. sooner pop to the local carboot...lol
ReplyDeleteWow, impressive finds. It is just so nice to be able to have a walk around.
