I found a bundle of photographs at one of the last Sunday car boots of the season, they were in a box among other house clearance stuff . The man selling them said £5 for the lot or 50p each, then he said "what are they? I've not even looked at them".
They are probably Edwardian photos, mainly of Suffolk, some have village names pencilled on the back others just said Suffolk, he accepted my offer of £4 for the lot as I wanted to take them home for a better look.
I put them up on a Facebook Group called East Suffolk in Old Photos and lots of people responded and identified a few that weren't named.
What I can't find out is if they are copies of well known old photographic views that are already with local history groups or unknown - probably the former.
This is Laxfield - it's on the shop name, although it's a scene I would have known anyway .The shop is still there, it's a Co-op now. The building on the right was and still is a pub and the church still has the railings.
What a wonderful find! Well done, you!
ReplyDeleteJust shows how working together can solve things! I bet you've brought back some memories
ReplyDeleteThe state of the roads and lanes tells you that cars had hardly made it to the scene.
ReplyDeleteFabulous find and lots more places for you to visit. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWell done on the great find of the photographs! Isn’t it lovely that people have been able to identify them for you! Catriona
ReplyDeleteThese are fabulous - what a treasure trove and it's so good that you've been able to identify them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant find. If you do not intend to keep them, you would probably be able to sell them on ebay, to people who collect postcards of Suffolk. My Partner collects postcards of Cardiff and is always looking for more for his collection and some are quite valuable.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find! How lucky you are that they are written upon the backs, and you have found a great community of folk to get additional help to ID. I will look forward to more of this discovery.
ReplyDeleteSuch fascinating scenes from a bygone age, a bargain too.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
If it were me, I would spend a little time and money to travel to all these places to see what they look like now. Not necessarily all in one trip, but spaced out over a period of time as outings to places to explore.
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to search old photos and see how different things were back then.
ReplyDeleteWell done on rescuing them. I always think it's sad when old photos, whether they be of places or people are just discarded. Our town's Facebook group is a good source of this type of local photos, it's always interesting to see them. You've most likely given a lot of people some happy memories.
ReplyDeleteYou bought a treasure trove of great old photos. It is always nice to look at photos from the past and notice any changes. Using Facebook to help id some of the photos is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteYour local library might well be interested in the photos for historic purposes.
Old photos and postcards used to sell well on eBay. We have several FB pages, historical and school mostly. I'm sure most end up in landfill these days, so well done on saving them. I donated all of mine to the local Historical Society.
ReplyDeleteSuch interesting photos from the past. And such a good idea to post them on FB for identification.
ReplyDeleteI love it when there are people in the picture -- their fashions help date the scene. I bet Steve will like these and approve your buy.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you rescued the photos.

ReplyDeleteWow, what a great find and how wonderful you are getting help finding out what each of the photos are about.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Oh WOW were you lucky to find those, and how fascinating they are. I love looking at old photos. Great idea to share them on line and get ID's of the villages depicted. Truly stepping back in history.
ReplyDeleteI would have bought these too. What a terrific find. I could get lost looking at them and imagining what it was like then.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great find!
