L for the the Church of St Lawrence, Little Waldingfield

A very handsome church in South Suffolk which I called in to visit on my way home from the Charity book sale at Acton, a couple of weeks ago.

In through the lovely porch with it's sundial

The pulpit stands on a single leg - very unusual - I guess it's been there for a long time so must be safe.

The font has seated monks carved on it - unusual

There are several of these marble plaques which give mention to money left in wills for the poor of the village

I was puzzled by this strange table thing on top of this very old trunk

Very old pieces of  broken stained glass have been included in this window, something I've often seen in churches - when the stained glass was destroyed during the reformation.

This was just a quick visit as I was chilled through and not feeling the best but there is More here on Simon Knott's  Suffolk Churches Index

  1. The table top on the trunk makes good sense, I have no idea if it's just been a common sense addition, maybe someone else will know.

  3. It is a lovely church.I wonder why the pulpit is only supported by one pillar. It does look rather strange.

  5. I don’t think I ever realized that is why there are some odd windows in churches, they have used very old pieces of stained glass. Thoughtful. Thanks for the bit of information. Indeed an interesting church. Do you think that piece of wood is over the trunk so that they can use the space and protect the old trunk? DL

  6. Certain features make the church unique. The pulpit, sundial entry, and trunk made into a table are unusual. The sunlight in the church is lovely.
The devotion to the poor and tablets stating as well, is also remarkable.
I hope you begin to feel better soon. Whatever this is, it is taking too long to resolve. You need to feel better.

  7. What a lovely photo of the church on a sunny if cold day. The pulpit is very unusual but I’m not sure I would feel safe standing in it! We had sleet here today so all the winter layers are being used. Catriona

  10. A post pulpit - that's what I will call it anyway. I imagine they weigh new vicars for the job! (I was going to write post but was a good girl!). Live that really unusual font too. Never seen that design used anywhere. If looks a lovely church.
