Thanks for all the weather comments yesterday - I always love it when a comment turns into a post and makes lots more comments!

Briefly last Saturday I thought about a week of meal photos, but then the leek and kale fritters served with bacon and tinned tomatoes on Sunday weren't very photogenic (although it was a very filling and tasty meal for a day with snow).
Which started off looking like this, got heavier with huge flakes which somehow settled on the very wet ground for an hour before everything turned to rain - quelle surprise!
I eat my main meal about 1 o'clock-ish nowadays, preferring to eat a much smaller meal later in the day...............sign of old age I reckon!
The famous nutritional advice to "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper" is most commonly attributed to Adelle Davis (1904–1974), a prominent American nutritionist and author. She popularized this phrase in the mid-20th century to promote eating a heavy breakfast, a moderate lunch, and a light dinner for better health.
Breakfast each morning at the moment, until I fancy a change. Chopped apple/pear and prunes, warmed for a minute in the microwave, toast (home made bread 50/50 wholemeal/white) and cheats home made marmalade and a large coffee.
This was one day.............
Main meal - Stir fry carrots, onion and chopped kale with noodles and soy sauce and two each cook-from-frozen party food ....... mini spring rolls and tempura prawns. Small meal - Celery, Hovis biscuits and Blue Stilton cheese.
That was the end of that brief foray into a food blog week!
Last weeks good news was the letter from NHS telling me all was well with my mammogram. Last weeks bad news was a letter from HMRC telling me I'd earned too much money from my savings so they'd have to tell Suffolk County Council to tax me more on the spouses pension.
Oh well, I downsized to have some savings - Ha!
I know lots of people aren't watching the Winter Olympics but if you can cope with it have a look today at the GB team in the Men's Curling at 6pm this evening. They did so well to get through to the final. It's a fascinating sport, tactical and more difficult than it looks of course. I'll be cheering them on from Mid Suffolk
Back Monday

Great news re your mammogram x we will be cheering on from the NW!
ReplyDeleteGood news about the mammogram. I pushed the boat out as T&R here, and got two good gammon steaks (£4.50) - although the best ones were £6! I did cheesey potatoes too, Rosie's favourite and she ate a goodly portion. You have some healthy eating there.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been a relief to get your results through. And your brief foray into food blogging is appreciated. I love to be nosy at what other people enjoy eating - and to get some different ideas, of course :)
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be watching the curling, as I find it absolutely fascinating. I would love to give it a try, even though I'd almost certainly be hopeless at it. Xx
I loved reading Adele Davies books from the library I’ve searched trying to find any of her books but can’t find any anywhere
ReplyDeleteGood news about the mammogram. It often feels that HMRC give with one hand and take with another, this month I received my first state pension payment along with the new tax code from HMRC! It would be helpful if successive governments hadn't frozen the personal tax allowance.

Wasn’t that Curling semi final brilliant - so well played by the GB team too. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Women’s figure skating that followed - won by an absolutely joyful routine! The big thing there to me was seeing the camaraderie between the women involved though - such a delight after the will documented bitchiness of years ago!
ReplyDeleteI hope you have put the maximum amount of your savings in Cash ISAs. Premium bonds are tax free too.
ReplyDeleteIt really annoys me, we pay our taxes all our working lives to support, welfare, NHS and other much needed services, YET if we help ourselves and have savings, we are again taxed. I'm not against taxing wealthy pensioners, but the personal allowance it just a few pounds more than our state pension. With the NHS under so much pressure at a time many of us needs it, makes you think was it worth such a long working life.
ReplyDeleteGood news about your mammogram. I have now reached the age when I shall have to request one come May as it’s three years since my last one. Catriona
ReplyDeleteMy Grandfather died in 1947 and his motto was the very same, "Eat breakfast like a king . . . etc" so it was in use much earlier.
ReplyDeleteNo Olympics here today, it's Guinness Six Nations all the way, but I do wish the British Curling Team well!
We will be watching and enjoying the rugby and the Winter Olympics.
ReplyDeleteAgree with PP’s comments about savings, so frustrating.
Like you we often have a light evening meal, cheese and biscuits is a favourite.
Alison in Devon x
I recently had a clear mammogram too, so that's behind me for a bit. I get frustrated that you save then get taxed for being practical.
ReplyDeleteI find that some of the tastiest meals I have look like a proper 'dogs dinner' when I try to take a photograph of them ... mind you some of my other photos aren't that much better!!
ReplyDeleteWe get taxed from every angle these days don't we. I still have one more large tax bill to pay after closing down my company last year. It got me cross paying the last one. I hope you enjoy the last of the Olympics, I've managed to avoid every single event, so you cannot persuade me to watch the last few things. :-)
I did notice that Adele Davis lived to "only" 70 - that's not so old these days. As long as one is eating pretty healthy and keeping active like you do, maybe it doesn't matter what your eating schedule is? We all have our own traditions, don't we. "Different strokes for different folks." :)
ReplyDeleteYour meals look delicious. I also like Kale and it is very nutritious. Veggie stir fry is always great too. Small balanced meals overall seem to work best for me.
ReplyDeleteWhile you get rain, it snowed again overnight. This morning the forecast is for another Northeaster adding potentially another 12 inches of snow, starting Sunday into Monday.
Good news about the mammogram - I have one (and ultrasounds) coming up - 5 years ago I got the dreaded news, but very thankful that the regular testing and early intervention meant that the inconvenience for me for treatment was amazing.
ReplyDeleteGood news about the mammogram. I am always happy when mine comes back clear.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to convince Harvey that we should have our big meal earlier in the day, but have had no luck as of yet.
God bless.
Good news about the mammogram.
ReplyDeleteI love the food photos!
Snow - ick. We've had some again the last couple of days. My sister is going away this weekend - I was hoping the weather would be better for her!
I didn't realize you got snow last weekend! I wonder if it snowed here in London? (We were away.) Glad to hear the good news from the NHS, but leave it to HMRC to mess things up. :)
ReplyDeleteWe've gradually been moving any savings into ISAs - the boring sort that pay interest with no risk. That's made a big difference to the amount of tax that OH has been paying.
ReplyDeleteWhen I retire, I think we will go to having our main meal at lunchtime. I much prefer it to a bigger meal in the evening.
