The plastic bag over the starling proof sunflower hearts feeder was supposed to be stopping water getting in through the top where the hanging loop is. It isn't working. I'll try duct tape next.
Great excitement last Monday! The two new recycling bins arrived (three if you count the mini indoor one as well).They are ready to use when the new system starts in June. Unfortunately the larger of the two food waste bins had a lid that was completely broken. I rang to request a new one and the lady at the council said that so many have been broken in storage or during handling. That doesn't hold out much hope for them lasting very long once they are in use.
The same day the 500lt of heating oil was delivered. It was ordered the day before war started . The guy said he'd just done a short order emergency delivery of 500 litres that had cost someone £600! (almost double what I paid). He said they weren't even quoting definite prices now as the cost between the time they take an order and the time they've been down into Essex to get the oil from the terminal on the Thames and back into Suffolk and Norfolk the price will have gone up again. Then on the local Nextdoor website pages many people were saying they had ordered oil, paid for it but then had a email saying the company wanted more money or the order cancelled! Goodness knows how they can get away with this. Seems I was lucky to get mine at the price I paid.
This week I have been grateful for
- Arrival of 500 litres of heating oil without problems, enough to see me through until Autumn.
- More people at the Keep Moving Group so that we can have free weeks or pay less each week.
- Our free NHS health checks (mammogram last month and the bowel cancer testing pack this week)
- A windy day without rain to get the grass dry enough for cutting.
We have had to request umpteen new small brown recycling bins over the years. The binmen put them down too close to the road, a lorry comes along and the draught throws them down the road and they break.

The food waste bin is going to be a problem because of where I have to leave bins for collection - same problem I reckon with trucks and draughts.
DeleteMy daughter’s recycling bin got eaten by the lorry! The men fished it out but it has had no top on it since then. She has asked for a new one for about a year so now just puts everything into her black bin. Catriona
ReplyDeleteMy replacement arrived today - only 6 days after asking - surprisingly- now I have to keep them somewhere for 3 months until we are told we can use them
DeleteI am fortunate as when I asked for two new lids and a replacement red (plastics and tins) bin they were delivered to my yard and broken bin removed.
ReplyDeleteTam's just said that Heating Oil here is £147.5 per L. Ridiculous. As for cancelling outstanding orders and recalibrating the price . . . well.
You could do a post next week (for me!) about how to grow Peppers successfully from seed . . .
Pepper seeds were the almost the only things I did get germinated last year. Heat is the main thing I think.

I got this feeder to keep the starlings off which it does, but as you say a solid lump of seed in the middle every time.

You can use your duct tape on the bird feeder and the broken recycling bin lid? Good old duct tape!

DeleteFirst really blowy day for ages here the other night; it was properly 'wuthering' around the corners of the house. I put up nigella seed feeders but we don't seem to have any finches here.

DeleteI'm glad your oil situation is sorted. We need a new bin from our council too -- I just noticed today ours is split down both sides, with a sizable gap in one corner. I think it's from our former neighbors loading it up with too much heavy rubbish from their many renovation projects.

DeleteYour finches are so very colorful. Ours in Michigan turn a very bright yellow, but no extra head color. How vivid. DL
ReplyDeleteThey are more common than 50 years ago due to more people feeding birds in gardens. I've not seen them often here but it's good when they appear.
Deletedon't hold your breath over the quality of the bins, you could treat them with kid gloves on and they will still shatter.

DeleteIt's all very well having recycling bins, but not everyone has sufficient room to store them. We're lucky, but some folk aren't.

ReplyDeletePrices are on the rise and will continue until the war is resolved The Felon is now warning it may last longer and US Marines are going in. If anything, things seem to be escalating. Sad. Disappointing.
