Things I don't Buy At All or Not Very Often

Pinched this idea from a vlogger........

Things I don't buy at all or not very often.

Not buying some things leaves money for buying others - like books!

  • Lottery Tickets
  • Hair stuff or any products other than shampoo.
  • Make up and beauty products
  • Ready Meals that just need heating in the microwave
  • Multi-buys - they tend to be branded products and Aldi don't do BOGOFs anyway
  • Pre-cut fruit and veg.
  • Bottled water
  • Fruit juices
  • Fizzy Drinks
  • Alcohol
  • Fabric softener and scent boosters
  • Scented candles
  • New ornament type things
  • A huge variety of branded cleaning products
  • Meal deliveries - like Just Eat and Deliveroo - not even sure if they would deliver here anyway
  • Magazines and Newspapers
  • Manicures
  • New gadgets that do different things in the kitchen - I have all the things I need.
  • Jewellery
  • Air Fresheners or plug in scented things

There are some of that list that might be useful with age - I can see how ordering meals from a company like Wiltshire Farm Foods could be handy and better than supermarkets. And preprepared fruit and veg for anyone with arthritis etc.

  1. There are a lot on that list that I do not buy but also a few that I do.
I used to buy a lot of magazines, now I try to borrow them or subscribe to some through my library. There is one I treat myself to, but instead of the paper edition (which I would prefer) I buy the Kindle version which is 1/3 of the cost!

  2. I put a tick by 17 items on your list; I do buy some 'pierce and ping' microwave and some 'tin tray' oven meals for days when I have zero energy, otherwise I'd just graze on biscuits and cereal. And I do get the 'meal deal' stir fry meals for the same reason. But I have a bit more leeway in my budget than many people, for which I'm very thankful.

    1. Exactly what Kirsten said 17/20 ticks. I do like a small glass of orange juice at breakfast.

    2. We prefer half an orange each with breakfast, cut into wedges,

      A good list.
I don’t buy tubes or packets of crisps and savoury snacks,
Instead we have a few plain nuts or popcorn kernels.

  3. My list is mostly the same as yours. I used to get a daily newspaper and lots of magazines but no more! I get one magazine on subscription which I pass to a friend who passes it on again and she in turn passes me the one magazine she gets and I pass it on again.
I think it's much healthier not to have lots of fresheners, scents etc - too many chemicals!

  4. 3 out of your 20 are put in my trolley…….now and again just not very often.
A hair product that lasts quite a long time - bottled water is sometimes necessary when you’re road travelling in the bush and not sure what the local supply is like - and there’s usually a ready to eat curry on hand that is used as the base for a larger meal.
Sometimes we do need to work out what’s a need and what’s a want and how much they relate to our needs and wants and our budget

  5. I don't buy highly scented things. The men in this house turn their noses up at anything smelly and I find that they either make me sneeze or itch.

  6. I got 14. I wear eyeshadow and mascara, and use skin cream when I remember it (one Tam gave me). I do drink wine (one of those tiny bottles on a Friday), need conditioner for my hair. Buy newspapers - perhaps one a fortnight. I love magazines, but a friend has given me a subscription to Country Living and I try not to treat myself beyond that. I do like my fizzy drinks (smack wrists). I haven't used fabric softener since about 1980.

  7. I will tick 19 as I do drink wine.

As for newspapers and magazines - there is a lot on line for free and library cards usually have a PressReader, or similar, for free which gives even more.

I buy very few books as, again, I use the library and free online sites.

Another saving for us would be paying people to do what we can do ourselves - cleaning (house, car, windows, carpets)
    - gardening and grass cutting
    - hair cutting

  8. Great list, the only thing I buy on it is fruit juice, my milkman delivers a bottle of Orange juice every week.

  9. Our lists are very similar, I don't buy many scented things at all, just a few tried and well used products that I know the smell of. I have never bought 'scent boosters', I think they are a ridiculous idea. They are just a marketing mans ploy for people who have just gotten used to the scent of their fabric conditioner. Once you take a step back from advertising you see it for what it is.

  10. Oh dear we do buy bottled water and I buy a good facial moisturiser and I love having a manicure and something you didn't say, I have my hair done every week!

  11. It’s a good list. I do drink wine but have cut down dramatically on beauty products preferring to spend money on the garden or occasionally craft stuff. We’ve got some cheap bottled water in our Cupboard of Doom but ordinarily tap is fine. I cut OH’s hair although I’m not qualified to do so 😂 and I have mine cut at a barbers which is so much cheaper.

  12. I could have written your list! And added: I have no paid subscriptions to anything online.

  13. I never buy books as I have a wonderful library in my city.

  14. That is a good list. My list includes only 15. Not bad but it could be better!

  17. I don't buy any of those things and am with Traveller on doing our own cleaning, gardening, and cutting. ~ skye

  18. I did break down last month and bought a gadget that hard boils eggs! I was so frustrated that mine were not fully hard boiled the last 2-3 times. Now I hard boil 6-8 at a time and can grab one to bring to work for lunch along with a yogurt. Sandwiches are absurdly expensive in downtown Boston and I don't really have time to leave the building anyway.
