First of all apologies for the comments I didn't get around to replying to....The day just went.......whoosh!
It's quite strange in this country to go to bed knowing the next day and the one after and another after that will be dry and sunny and even more unusual to know it will be really hot.
This week has been like that and more the same for next week too - I am thankful to be able to do very little - even avoided going out really early for shopping. I was sad to have to cancel a lunch with cousins but the heat is getting to me more this year than ever before.............an age thing I guess.
The dustbin men have been starting work early due to the heat and my bit of the village is one of their first stops so they've been coming not long after 6am but it wasn't them that woke me on Wednesday morning, instead a man on a ride-on mower went into the churchyard to do the paths - I looked at the clock - just after 5am - he really did want to get it done early!
We got through the exercises at our Keep Moving Group. .......all windows open and much water drunk. Two other ladies led the exercises - it was too hot for me. I set up my phone for the 10 minute meditation and then went and sat out in the porchway to cool down. Several people have dropped out recently - perhaps it's only because of the heat and holiday season - I hope they return.
As I shut the living room windows very late Thursday evening I noticed a sort of dark patch on the grass(not good enough to call it a lawn) so went out to look and YES - a hedgehog, first I've seen here in 5 years.
I have 10 billion wasps eating the pears on the small pear tree - there were lots of pears - soon there will be none.
The climbing French beans are producing a few beans - very tasty.
I've not done a Being Grateful list for ages....... since March in fact, but this week I'm grateful for.....
- Enjoying watching tennis on TV without having to be there in the heat.
- Being retired and not working in the heat.
- Stocked cupboards, fridge and freezer so I didn't need to go out shopping ....in the heat.
- The library books that I have here to read, indoors out of the heat.
- The bread machine that makes my bread so easily even when the weather is hot.
Bit of a theme there!
Not sure if anything is happening this weekend but tennis is on TV for sure although Arthur Fery's brilliant run at Wimbledon was ended by Sascha Zverev who's 6 foot 6inches tall with a massive serve and - hooray- Jannik Sinner beat Djokovic setting up the Sunday final that I have no idea who will win.
At 11am in the men's doubles wheelchair finals Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid are aiming for yet another title to add to the 24 they already have!
And there is a football match tonight - but it's after my bedtime again.
Have a good weekend, I'll be back Monday.

Arthur did us proud . I was told he will be no 36 on the rankings on Monday - so direct entry into all the big tournaments
ReplyDeleteDreadful news about Ann Widdecomb - she me I could not be further apart politically, but no one deserves to die ad it appears she did
I met her once at a party - she called me a Champagne Socialist- clearly intended as an insult - I told her it was the nicest compliment I had received in a long time
Miriam
Ranking 36 is brilliant - he'll get lots of practice against the big names now!
DeleteWhen I heard Ann Widdecombe had died aged 78 , I thought 'goodness that's no age nowadays' but then heard she'd been murdered- that's just so wrong. They do seem to have arrested someone .
For Miriam… I have been called a Champagne Socialist several times, I always replied, “Yes but the difference between you and I is I want champagne for everyone” 🤣. We are living in a sad world at the moment for such things to happen. Me too Sue the heat has really sapped my energy. June
ReplyDeleteGreat answer June
DeleteAnd me too - I want us all to share in more ( other than the billionaires who can have less ! )
M
I have no idea what a champagne socialist is - which must mean I'm not one!
DeleteNone of us here are good in the heat and the past few weeks have seen us keeping inside and not doing an awful lot in an attempt to keep cool. I was so glad to see an overcast sky this morning. I never thought I would say that!
ReplyDeleteReally odd to see cloud this morning here in Mid Suffolk
DeleteI don’t do well in the heat either and have achieved very little over the last couple of weeks. Even sewing holds no appeal, as my brain is overheated and I can’t think correctly. Reading, crosswords and my daily online puzzles are about the limit of my efforts. Enjoy the tennis. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI seem to have done nothing constructive recently - just keeping up with the basics until it's cooler
DeleteMe neither, but I feel like I'm just wasting the days. All I can seem to do is read and watch tv and try to keep cool. I'm sure it is worse as we get older!
DeleteI am grateful for a couple of cool rooms downstairs where I can hole up with sewing, computer, book, tv etc. Next shopping trip will be out the door at first sparrow f*rt I reckon!
ReplyDeleteIt's handy that some supermarkets open early enough to get in and out and home again. We have cloud here today - it's quite strange but good
DeleteI never have enjoyed the heat, but am becoming accustomed to it. No choice, really!
ReplyDeleteI hope your weekend is calm and cool.
Enjoying the cloud here in mid Suffolk this morning - which seems such an odd thing to say!
DeleteMy mother and I are going to see the Tall Ships this morning - I got tickets to an area that is supposed to be less crowded. My mother is so worried about the crowds that she wanted to take the subway but from where we live it would be three different lines. I was afraid it would be too much walking for her before we even get there so we are leaving at 7 am in the hope of getting a parking place! She agreed to give up the tennis to come (but I bet she will record it). I'll cheer for England for you in the soccer later.
ReplyDeleteHope you get a parking spot without too much walking. I looked online to see what you are going to see and it says " A spectacular parade of sail". That sounds wonderful!
DeleteAmen to your things to be grateful for list, mine would be much the same.
ReplyDeleteI’m enjoying our French climbing beans very much and courgettes are starting to put in regular appearances.
Alison in Devon x
A cooler day on Saturday - nice breeze - today Sunday seems the same
DeleteI agree that being retired is a blessing! Not having to work in the heat after years spent in hot playgrounds and hot classrooms with fractious children. Alleluia!
ReplyDeleteI am watching our ripening plums like a hawk, don't want wasps to ruin too many of them.
Penny
The wasps swarm onto the pears and soon they are on the ground whith even more wasps on them
DeleteSometimes I am able to walk inside the shopping mall (with A/C) or through the buildings of a community college not too far away (also with A/C). That way I can get my steps in without being out in the heat too much.
ReplyDeleteHandy having places with AC closeby
DeleteHello! It has been extremely hot and humid here in Maryland these past few weeks. I also get up and try to do what I need to early. I also walk early in the morning, but that is just as much to avoid visiting with all the people as to avoid the heat! Take care and stay cool!
ReplyDeleteThis heat is certainly widespread, cooler here Sunday
DeleteTaking it easy in the high heat is best.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in Arizona in July which can be 100+ degrees F the locals told me to do everything in the early morning or when the sun goes down. I did my best but still could not get used to the high temperatures. I like being outside during the daylight.
Unfortunately, now even in Massachusetts we are getting more days of high heat just like you are experiencing in England.
It needs a whole different way of life for hot weather
DeleteI do hope the Heat Dome you are are experiencing in Europe lifts so you get some relief. I have Family in North Wales and I know they don't have AC there. Here in the Desert we're used to high triple digits that are ridiculously Hot but we all have AC. I couldn't even imagine. Our East Coast of America is experiencing a Heat Dome as well... Climate Change is upon us.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine living in the heat you have there - with or without AC!
DeleteI'm really not enjoying this heatwave, Alan loves it, we are so different. He'll sit or lie in the sun for hours l whereas I hide indoors. Being on a short break further south than usual, with higher temperatures is not a good move for me!!
ReplyDeleteUp until a couple of years ago I loved being out in the sun but now it's just too much.
DeleteNeither of us tolerate the heat well either. We don't fancy eating much and can't sleep at night, it's far too sticky. Already I'm fed up of living in darkened rooms during the day. I feel like a mole! Roll on cooler weather.
ReplyDeleteWe did actually stay up to watch the football. What a result! I won't say what in case someone reading this gets a spoiler ;)
Angie
I'm feeling the same, and wondering if I should have stayed up for the football! I couldn't get to sleep till 4am and I had to up at 8! Hot weather and too little sleep, not a good combination!
DeleteDaughter and son in law returned on the 6th from their hiking vacation in the Cotswolds. Weather was perfect: no rain and moderately warm. They had a grand time.
