He thought of the Auction rooms at Diss who sometimes have plants as part of their outside sale and had a look on line and found they had some good sized conifers. So we pootled off up there yesterday and waited for the things we wanted to come up
Col waiting! |
and came home with these.
2 Picea Hoopsii (Extremely prickly Blue Spruce) a Silver Van Tol Holly and because no one else wanted it Col also bid on a Weeping Pussy Willow which he got for £2. There was a Monkey Puzzle Tree too but it was only a foot tall and still went for a lot more than we were willing to pay and also some nice little Yew trees but they were selling in lots of 16 trees - rather more than we wanted.
That really does mean we only have room now for Silver Birch.........probably.
Had a glance around the inside rooms at the junk type furniture stuff and the posher antiquey things but nothing we wanted and anyway we had to hurry home as Col was out in the afternoon at the leaving do for one of the blokes he used to work with.
Thanks for comments on the pear harvest and hello and welcome to two new followers.
Back Monday
Sue
Glad you didn't go for the monkey puzzle tree...not country enough looking! x
ReplyDeleteNeither are the blue spruce!
DeleteWhat pretty trees. Going to that auction reminds me of when we were living in Dorset, and would go to the weekly sales of produce in Wareham (Cottees, whose furniture auctions we also went to every time they were on). You could buy fruit & veg, garden plants, cut flowers, eggs, trees - all sorts. Happy memories.
ReplyDeleteIt's a popular sale yard always busy. Sometimes on TV Bargain hunt too. They used to do small livestock - not any more but they are building a huge new building for something and thank heavens they've modernised the loos as they were awfully tatty and smelly!
DeleteWhat a gorgeous colour those trees are Sue.
ReplyDeleteHow big do they grow?
Hugs-x-
Probably HUGE but it wont matter as they'll be on the edge of the new wood.
DeleteI've a friend starting radiotherapy soon for NHL so anything i could get her that would help.. boiled sweets and drinks is what I've found online x
ReplyDeleteCol had loads of chemotherapy and felt really awful for much of the time. It tends to cause everything to taste odd and tastes to change frequently. They reckon pineapple usually tastes right but Col wasn't keen. We just kept trying different things - he found savoury better than sweet but everyone is different. Hope your friend gets through it. Col will soon be starting all over again with donor stem cells.
Deletethanks - she's found out shes 'just' having radiotherapy but awaiting her final tests xx
DeletePicea are lovely. As for Monkey Puzzles - we have had one in our town for hundreds of years. They are very slow growing and it was quite a landmark. It has just died - everyone misses it but the space it has left is huge and it has lightened the place up a lot.
ReplyDeleteThey are a lovely colour, will make a feature in the wood.
DeleteLove the blue spruce. How great to plant them in a birthday wood. We have a friend who lives in Diss but I didn't realise there was an Auction House there
ReplyDeleteT.W. Gaze - have been there for ever! They have weekly auctions on Fridays and special sales on Saturdays
DeleteIsn’t that Blue Spuce beautiful xx
ReplyDeleteThe Blue Spruce is a lovely addition to any woods. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Col's Wood will be enjoyed by all, especially the little grands.
ReplyDeleteI adore col's hat xxxx
ReplyDeleteThose Blue Spruce are striking looking trees, you won't be able to miss them in Birthday Wood :-)
