Last week Col dropped me off in the town centre when he went for his regular blood test and clinic appointment at the hospital. I had a couple of hours with not many places I had to go which gave me time to trawl the charity shops. I've not found anything I wanted in any charity shops anywhere for months (August was the last charity shop finds post) so it was quite a surprise to pick up 3 things.
Another little kilner jar, this one will be for the herb and spice shelf it was one whole £.
The pack on the right is something I've never before seen in a charity shop or boot-sale. It's a Replica Pack of paper memorabilia from WWII. I've seen them at museum shops and always wondered what sort of things they had in them, never bought one as they are £6.95 new.The company (Sweet and Nostalgic) produce all sorts of packs from The Blitz and Home Front to Childhood of the 60's. I think they are really a teaching resource? Anyway this one was all about The Navy and the war at sea and it was £1.
After opening and reading all the bits I'm glad I've never paid full price for a set.
The book on the left was rather a punt because I have been trying to collect this series of books of historical crime for years and years. Written by this prolific author back in the 90's, they are quite hard to come by. At one time I had a list in my bag of the titles I hadn't got but of course it isn't in my bag now. There were 3 of the series in the charity shop and I recognised the other two covers but wasn't sure about this one, but at 99p I thought I'd risk it and Great Joy it was one I didn't have. I've now got 8 out of 11, when I've got all 11 I'll start reading them.
Then I had to hang around waiting for Col to pick me up for half an hour as it got gradually darker and colder as he'd got held up in traffic between the hospital and town. I was glad to get home. I used to love a couple of hours in town to rootle around in charity shops but must be getting old.
Back Tomorrow

Nice finds! I went through photos and items my grandfather had from WWI when he served in France. I was given them by my cousin after my uncle died. he was my mom's brother. Goodness, it was interesting items he'd saved. Ipswich was a fun town for me to shop in when I lived in UK. Glad you were able to go and have a bit of fun! Hope Col is doing well!
ReplyDeleteSame here, straight in straight out is our motto when possible.
ReplyDeleteGreat finds and agree about those replica sets. I bought one for my great nephew when he was doing a project and we were not impressed. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI very rarely get to have a wander round town by myself which is why I would love to live a bit closer if we could afford to move.
ReplyDeleteThe bus service here isn't too bad but the two hours between going in to the little town and coming back again is too much as it is a very tiny town which can be gone round twice in less than an hour. Big town is too big to get round in two hours but I am going to get Roz to drop me there one weekend soon so that I can shop in peace for her Christmas gifts.
Lovely to find a book you haven't got from a collection.
Hugs-x-
Good finds and I hope you get around to reading those books.
ReplyDeleteI was a teacher training student in the early 70s when they brought out Jackdaws, which were a similar idea to the pack you described. They were really over-priced and uninteresting for the most part. However, it was quite simple to produce your own, more fun, more interesting and definitely far more value for money! No photocopying then, you had to draw write etc with pencil and crayons, too. Pam
ReplyDeleteWere they in colourful folders? we werte given some packs when I was homeschooling the children for 6 months in 1991
DeleteI don't hang onto fiction books here either. In and then pass them on. Haven't got the space and rarely reread them.

Glad you managed to find another book in your series. I hope you find them all soon.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We acquired some original papers from WW11 - one of these is an original Japenese leaflet which was dropped from planes to spread propaganda during the war. We have also got a necklace made by a soldier in the trenches from rolled up Woodbine cigarette packets. We also have the vaccination record books issued in the forces of our mums and dads of all things and those little identity cards people used to carry. I have a little museum of stuff tucked away - my daughters think it is great when we have a rumage through the past.
ReplyDeleteSounds fascinating to look through. Our son has his Grandads gas mask
DeleteOh, I love anything WWII be it original or reproduction - lucky you. I keep forgetting days are getting shorter and colder for you, when here in Australia days are getting longer and hotter.
ReplyDeleteYes much shorter and much colder too. Winter is too long here!
DeleteSounds like you found a couple of good things! I love looking in charity shops but I usually only end up finding books and I really don't need any more of them lol. Once in a while I find a really good deal and that's probably what keeps me looking!
ReplyDeleteI don't like when you have a certain time somewhere. You either don't have enough to keep you occupied or there is too much to do in the time. Mmmm...maybe it's just the time constraint I don't like! Hope Col's appointment went well!
I never know if I shoud go for a coffee or if I do he will ring to say he's on his way just as I sit down!
