I've done a half measure trial run of this recipe just to see how it turned out.
It's from this book, which is one of my favourite books for good ideas
The end result looks exactly like a jar of bought ginger in syrup, so I'm going to do some more for the Christmas hampers for our two sisters and their husbands.

A delicious ideas for a gift!
ReplyDeleteJ x
I hope they like it
DeleteDo people give you stuff like this back, I mean are their Christmas presents to you similar?
ReplyDeleteNot necessarily, but that isn't why I do them
DeleteI wasn't suggesting that you do, but I was curious as I wondered if this sort of gift is a tradition in your family. I have never known gifts like this.
DeleteIt all began a few years ago when I had no idea what to get my sister and Col's sister and their husbands so made stuff and filled a basket.
DeleteI really HATE giving something that people don't want and food things are always useful.
This exchange brought back fond memories for me. Growing up, I helped my very creative and talented mother make so many homemade gifts for the many relatives. I always thought of homemade gifts (including fudge and jam of course) as the only meaningful gift for someone I cared about. It was very difficult for me when I married into a family that never would think of such a thing as a real gift. Oh well, I blithely kept on knitting, crocheting, preserving, and making some rather bizarre gifts (the batiked place-mats were a triumph, however).
DeleteNow that I live in a country where "black Friday" shopping frenzies are normal (coming up this Friday, the day after our Thanksgiving),I'm even more determined to make gifts like ginger in syrup!
You have just caused an Amazon moment here! I found a copy for a penny, plus postage. If it's as good as it looks, I shall get Tamzin a copy too.
ReplyDeleteHow did the ginger turn out? I found in the past you have to get very fresh ginger or else it is very tough and stringy.
yes you are right about the ginger, I have bought in the past from Co-op when we lived at the smallholding and I needed some for the jam - always old and tough so only buy now from big supermarket so it is fresher
DeleteHome made preserved ginger is such a good idea, because it's so useful but really expensive to buy. I'm going to try it with really fresh tender ginger from an Asian supermarket, where they sell a lot of it & it's very cheap compared to the supermarket.
ReplyDeleteLove ginger in any form-yum. It's the only thing that settles my stomach and I love a very dark chocolate ginger. Catriona
ReplyDeleteLovely post. In the past when I have made this I have pressure cooked the root ginger from fresh. I was always told to use a source of ginger from a shop that has a high turnover as that way you will get the freshest ginger so a supermarket is ideal. It makes a lovely preserve and is a regular on my pantry shelf. Its nice served with fresh melon and lime and then drizzled with the syrup and a few pieces of the preserved ginger as a pudding over Christmas. Kumquats are also good done in a similar manner and you have a sweet and sour effect going on with that. I haven't got that book though looks really interesting. Might just have to go and have a look. Glad the Orchard is planted and I love that its planted on the public pathway. Very clever and a lovely use of the land. Lovely article. Take care. Pattypanxx
ReplyDeleteoh, yummy..
ReplyDeleteWhat on earth is it used for?

Anything that needs a kick of ginger!
DeleteEverything needs a kick of ginger :D
DeleteI always make my own now, I love the ginger and the syrup is lovely.
ReplyDeleteI won't tell my daughter that you are making ginger in syrup else she will be camping on your doorstep. She loves it.

Now, isn't that funny. We have both done posts on ginger today :D Forgot about ginger in syrup... Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteYours looks prettier than mine!
DeleteSounds daft, but it had never occurred to me that you could make it before. There you go...I learn something new everyday!

nice addition to the hamper. Liking the look of that book too.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby loves anything ginger. I made crystallised ginger last year but I had to ration him due to the sugar content. I think I'll give this a go as its useful in cooking etc. Thanks Sue.
