I'm not sure where I heard or read about this book, but it sounded so special that it had to be bought.
It's Christmas Eve and the house in Exeter Street is crammed full of guests- and more keep arriving. But Mrs Mistletoe squeezes them into every nook and cranny, the dresser, the bath and even a baby in the kitchen sink.
My favourite illustration, just the sort of page to linger over and point out all the people sleeping in the house
This book will be enjoyed by the grandchildren in a year or two I think.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely book. Beautiful illustrations. Lily was fortunate to have been given a book advent calendar this year so we've been reading a different fairy tale each evening. I was a bit naughty and carefully opened number twenty four to make sure it would be 'The Night before Christmas'. It is, and I've taped it back up so she'll never know. X

DeleteWhat a sweet book. Maybe a year or two before your precious grandchildren will enjoy, but you are enjoying it now, I can tell. I think that's my favourite picture too. I think more adults should read more children's books!
ReplyDeleteI missed out on so many childrens books when I was small, we only had books if they were given by aunties at Christmas or birthdays and 1 a year from Sunday school
DeleteThat is lovely book. I have removed most of Violet's 'little' books, but I've kept hold of any that have pretty illustrations, really so I can look through them and admire them.

Strange story, some parents had gone to Timbuktu, two fat men knocking the door asking for a bed with their wives and saying they would sleep on the mantelpiece and then some kangaroos in another picture. Some of the words seem sensible, like sleeping bags and bunks, and some seem totally mad.

DeleteThanks for introducing this book to me, with 4 small g.children it is one I will buy when available at good price. A child's Christmas in Wales, Dylan Thomas, illustrated by Edward Ardizzone has been a good one in the past, they have enjoyed.

Aww .. it's a lovely book, just the sort I used to read to my boys at bedtime when they were very small, and then I would take the book downstairs to pore over the pictures myself, drinking in every detail :-)

I've read your blog every day for years but have never commented until now. My daughters have loved this book since they were given a copy in 1999. Our son, Amos, was named after one of the characters. We have three copies so that each child can have one when they leave home. Thank you for introducing it to a wider audience. Jan x

DeleteWhat an adorable book. the kind to curl up on the couch with, grandkids all clustered around and sharing the words and pictures. Many years ago when I did substitute teaching, Harry Potter had just come out. To bring the stories alive with words out loud to those children was amazing. They just wanted more and more. I loved reading picture books to my children.

I bought this book many years ago and all five of my children loved it! I am now reading it to my grandchildren, it has been a favourite of ours for a long time.
