There's a Butterfly count going on all round the country at the moment. The information is HERE.
You can take part anytime between now and the 9th August.
It would be lovely to see all these (2 day-flying moths are included) but very, very unlikely
I attempted to count how many were on the Buddleia, but there were so many it was impossible.
Almost all were Peacock butterflies plus a couple of Large White and one or two Red Admirals
But this was the most exciting spot because I didn't see any at all last year. It's a Comma.
Down the meadow I've spotted Ringlets, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper. Last year there were Painted Lady flutterbies everywhere - haven't seen one at all this year
Back Tomorrow

Thanks for alerting me to this. As the count is done in 15 minute chunks, this looks like a great activity to do with my energetic 4 year old. A beautiful Red Admiral flew into the kitchen yesterday. We carefully assisted its escape
ReplyDeleteHaven’t seen many yet this year. A comma, a few painted ladies, a red admiral, one yellow, one blue and only a few cabbage white:(
ReplyDeleteMy Grandson mentioned this to me on Sunday when we all go together. H must be getting more aware of nature as he's the last person I would have thought would count butterflies. I love this.
ReplyDeleteSince we planted Hollyhocks in our little garden we seem to be attracting more bees so I'm pleased about that but we haven't seen many butterflies, probable because around here they all seem crazy on decking and paving.
I remember when this road was full of wild life.

pretty. and a nice way to spend a slice of time, watching butterflies . 🦋
ReplyDeleteLots of butterflies around yesterday but they move too quickly for me to identify. Did you get my email?
ReplyDeleteI have now
DeleteI get some in the greenhouse and I make sure the door is open at night it they are in there. I had a few dead ones in the GH when I moved in and I gave them to my neighbor he but them into an empty cd case and the children took them to school they were interested in them. I love watching them on the flowers.

We had a Blue visit this week but it was very unsporting and wouldn't stop long enough for an ID but in the past they have been Holly Blues in the garden. One Peacock yesterday, but suddenly lots of Gatekeepers here and at Dryslwyn castle, so they have been hatching all round. Meadow Browns, Ringlets, Small Tortoiseshells, Small Whites but no Commas. Fritillaries earlier in the year but again they are such swift fliers that ID is impossible. "Fritlery" we say (from when the kids were small) as it shoots past and onwards.
ReplyDeleteGlad your Buddleia has lots of butterflies on - ours is bereft so far.
Your photos are lovely and clear. I'm not keen on butterflies but I do appreciate their beauty and love to see them all over the Buddleia.
ReplyDeleteThis brought back happy memories... my youngest son learnt to count by counting the butterflies on the buddleia!
ReplyDeleteI haven't done anything like this here in the States. I have been wanting to plant a butterfly bush in my garden... as a little girl, my mother would take us to the State Park to help catch Monarch butterflies for tagging. I think having a buddleia bush would be so lovely in my new garden!
ReplyDeleteFriends walked in Layburn yesterday and saw huge numbers of butterflies so it must just be the right time.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job of photographing those! I only know the basic ones like Monarch and swallowtail. Do you get hummingbird moths there? They are amazing to see. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteI've only ever seen a Hummingbird Hawk moth once - that was a treat. We don't have Monarch or swallowtail butterflies here - sadly
DeleteI am really sad to say that where I am I haven't seen many butterflies at all. Where I walk in the morning there are so many wildflowers that should attract bees and butterflies but there are few to be seen. Makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful that your country is doing a Butterfly count. Your photographs are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteI planted a big pot of wildflowers to attract bees and butterflies but haven't seen a single one. Usually I get swallowtails. I did see one white cabbage when dogwalking, I don't see either on your list? Must be indigenous to US.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!

We call both Large and Small White "cabbage white" as they love all the brassica crops and ruin them! We don't see Swallowtails although they are in other parts of Europe.
DeleteWe've had the best year ever for butterflies on our buddleia including a common blue which I've not seen in our garden before. Arilx
ReplyDeleteWe had many many butterflies early in the year...then not much, however now there are plenty fluttering about again...beautiful! x
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous butterflies.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
