My Double Issue came through the letter box yesterday - all the TV and Radio programmes for umpteen channels from the 18th until the the last day of the year.
Whenever I've mentioned this in previous years - and I have EVERY year! some people have commented that's it's a waste of money and everything is online or in a newspaper, but I don't have a newspaper and don't want to keep looking online all the time and this is the only magazine I get.
The Christmas RT Double Issue has been a tradition in my home forever and having it on subscription has been my best ever downsizing treat. I started after moving here and the first 12 issues were £1 (not a pound each - £1 for all 12) Then is a half yearly payment which takes the cover price down to £2 a week and free delivery. There's a lot more to the RT than just programme times too and it no longer has staples in the double issue so won't fall to pieces like it did in the past!
(Heavens knows why I feel the need to justify my purchase! ) and another thing .....when you find yourself living alone the TV and radio can be very Good Companions.
Having said all that - the people who used to comment on things in a way that made me feel I had to justify everything don't comment anymore! Wonder where they went?
I shall enjoy a good read.
Back Tomorrow
Sue
I always use to have the Christmas issue of the RT but since I cannot read I don't get it, maybe I should try again but my concentration span is very short.
ReplyDeleteI had a lovely day yesterday with my D we met up in Frosts (garden center) with my your sister and BinL for a meal we had 4 hours of chat, it was lovely we have so much in common. The hours went quickly. It's a nice way to get together we go halfway for the journey and of course the sun was shinning which was great.

After almost picking up a copy of this yesterday, I'm now going to 'treat' myself this weekend. I haven't had one in years. X
ReplyDeleteHave a good read Sue and ignore any adverse comments - you are quite right that you don't have to justify buying it. I used to buy it years ago and my FIL would mark off what he wanted to watch if he was staying with us for Christmas! Although I don't buy one now as we never get to see the TV much at Christmas (though I would dearly love to sometimes) I wouldn't suggest that other people don't buy it.🎄🎄
ReplyDeleteIt was a tradition in our house for many years to buy RT at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteRT my dad's favourite read in the good old days! I get it free on my library app now but it's just not the same as rustling those pages :)
ReplyDeleteI always get my TV magazine, I buy it buy prescription too but I use my Tesco vouchers for it and that way it only costs a third of the price. I must admit it's not the RT, I find that a little too high brow. I get Total TV Guide. I highlight all the programmes I want to watch so I know, each day what to record and what to watch. I don't get any other magazines and really, it costs less than the price of a cup of coffee!
ReplyDeleteMemories come flooding back of the original black and white magazine. It has obviously lasted the century. This household television doesn't show the normal channels, it is all internet and Netflix, etc. Time of year when I hate Xmas movies.
ReplyDeleteIt is very useful to have the RT so you can preset programmes to record. I remember the days when we marked the film/show we REALLY wanted to see-and that was the afternoon/evening when visitors came, and the TV was immediately switched off so we missed it. Or my brother and I wanted to see different channels at the same time. Technology now means we can avoid such conflicts. I must be getting old though - I get ¾way through something, then set the remainder to record and go to bed! Enjoy your RT Sue (I like the Xmas quizzes at the back)
ReplyDeleteI always buy the Christmas Radio Times. It reminds me of my Mum, we always had the RT, it's a Christmas tradition in our house.
ReplyDeleteMoved on to someone else!
ReplyDeleteIt's something my mum used to get, but we never have. We get the Christmas Listings in our newspaper in the run up to Christmas. I don't see why you shouldn't get it as it is practical and gives you pleasure. Heavens, it's a small enough indulgence. I get Homes & Antiques each month, and took out a 6 mth Subscription to Country Living Magazine as it comes with all sorts of Christmas goodies too and was good value.
ReplyDeleteAngela - I'm with you there. Anything much after 9.30 and we start to flag and have to record it! Much easier pressing the button on Sky than it was in the old days of recording it on video though. That seems to antiquated now!
Huge fan of the Radio Times. I don't like leaving my TV choices to chance, so a good check-over for the coming week and five minutes each morning to set the recordings means we get the best of what's on offer.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, we use Tesco Clubcard vouchers to buy our subscription.
I am totally with you Sue and have the RT on subscription and always will! It even has it's own special folder!!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter brings her Christmas Radio Times with her when she comes to stay with us for Christmas & New Year. It's always marked with the programmes she/we should watch just like it was when she and her sister did the same when they were wee. Fun times!
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to justify yourself to anyone unless you've commited a crime which is a different thing entirely and I don't think buying the RT is a crime just yet, so you're free to do as you want and have a clear conscience. (A bit of mirth.)
ReplyDeleteI remember having to buy both the RT for BBC TV and Radio programmes and TV Times for the ITV programmes. Makes sense for them to be in one magazine hence the price I guess.
Well I think it is great that they still have it. Do as you want never mind what others think. I am a big magazine person. And while I have people say why they are getting so expensive? I say I love them and love the quiet when I sit down to look through them. and naysayers are the first to say they will take a magazine after I am done with it.
ReplyDeleteCathy
I am overseas but I think I'd like the Radio Times for its lovely cheery Christmas Santa on the cover, and the sheer pleasure of leafing through it and picking out what I wanted to watch. Also, the tradition of having it. I am always surprised at what people feel they need to comment on.
ReplyDeleteI have the RT subscription too, so I'm just as much a criminal as you, Sue!
ReplyDeleteRT looks like an excellent well-liked magazine. I'd buy it just based on your recommendation! No guilt, no justification...
ReplyDeleteHopefully they have realised they can't intimidate you, so if they do still read they daren't comment. Folk soon learnt that on my blog I'm not averse to telling stroppy people exactly where to go. Those that know me take it with a pinch of salt, those that don't bugger off!!
ReplyDeleteAs for the Radio Times my Christmas edition came yesterday too, I have had it delivered every week for the last couple of years and will continue to do so. It takes me a couple of hours to read all the articles, circle what I want to watch, do the puzzles etc and then finally set up all the recording on my Freeview box of the week ahead each week. Then I pass it on to Alan and he has a quick peruse looking for sporting events he may want to watch at the weekend. Good value for money I think. Oh and I started off with a 6 issues for £1 offer.
It's been a godsend for me over the past few months while mI have been watching so much television.
I am pleased to see that once again there are no staples in this double issue. Prior to that the Christmas double issue would nearly always fall apart after only a few days!!
I can still remember the excitement of my children waiting for the Christmas editions of the Radio Times and the TV Times. And the discussions and deliberations of marking off the must see programmes. The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special was always a must see.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun magazine to have in the house! .. a fun Christmas tradition that helps organize your viewing time .. gotta love that!
ReplyDeleteYou may be able to get things online, but you can't sit and have a good old look through and mark down all the things you want to watch!
ReplyDeleteIgnore mean people who comment. It's your money and your life so you can do what you want with it! Enjoy your magazine and your week.
ReplyDeleteWe love the excitement of the Christmas Radio Times....ours also comes by subscription and it arrived last week, still in its wrapper until the end of the week!
ReplyDeleteThe RT is the only magazine we get on subscription, and it is always interesting to read.....but the Christmas one is special!! Enjoy!
