A Quilt Exhibition

I've never had any wish to do quilting, I find the whole concept of cutting things into small pieces and stitching them back together again is beyond me BUT I can appreciate and love the wonderful designs, colours, skill and patience of the people who do do it.

So finding some information online about an exhibition by Diss Quilters I went up to South Lopham, which is just over the border into Norfolk, to have a look.

The exhibition was in the church, which has an unusual and huge and very ancient tower in the middle between Nave and Chancel.

Small quilts which would make lovely cushion covers

Beautiful quilt for Remembrance

And some of the larger quilts

Two for Autumn

This one below is a copy of something much older

A four seasons quilt for a little girl

So many large quilts draped over the pews

I entered the draw to win a quilt but no phone call came.

For more information about the church Simon Knott, whose Suffolk church index gets used a lot for my Suffolk Churches posts, has also visited all the churches in Norfolk and HERE is his write up of St Andrew South Lopham.

  1. There's some very pleasing designs there. I come from a family who were always engaged in some kind of craft project - knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, making rag mats and wool mats, lace-making - but I don't remember any quilting at all. Buying plain white sheets and pillow-cases then embroidering them with flowers and foliage was very popular when I was a child.

    1. I'm no good at embroidery and never learned to knit properly or crochet. And patchwork and quilting hasn't appealed.
I'll just stick to writing about others who do!

  2. A lovely exhibition!
I have always enjoyed both patchwork and quilting, which seem to go hand in hand. I do many hand crafts taught to me by my forebears, but patchwork and quilting I learned for myself. I am deeply into the history of patchwork and quilting. You've given me food for thought on my blog!

    1. I've never been any good at crafts except cross stitch.
Always rather be writing or reading!

  4. There's some beauties there. I had a go at English Paper Piecing but I didn't finish it, I just don't have the patience for it. I really like the Remembrance one and the Four Seasons.

  6. Beautiful quilts. I have made some cushions covers using hexagons. I find it quite relaxing sewing then all together, like therapy. Have not made a quilt though. Maybe one day.

    1. I used to do cross stitch but even that doesn't get me interested now. Would never have the patience for cutting out hexies and sewing them together!

  7. The ‘Remembrance’ quilt is such a simple design (that would have involved many many hours of work) yet is so very very effective.

  9. The quilts are beautiful and unique and represent many hours of patient work. Patchwork is not in my genes but I do admire the work of those who do it.

  10. Like you, I couldn’t do quilting, indeed any form of sewing is beyond me. I can really admire those quilts, though, and the talent and effort that has gone into them.
I used to knit but not in the last few years. I do buy latch hook cushion kits, 17”x17”, and they make a nice manageable craft project, and they’re always appreciated, because I tailor them to the recipient (often me!)

    1. I'd forgotten about latch hook kits, we did a couple of rugs when we first married . Half circle with autumn leaves and a rectangle with lilac flowers - I wonder what happened to them all those years ago

    2. I, too, made some rugs years ago and a great clown one for the kids. Took ages. One of the cats liked it so much she “performed” on it!
They’re quite expensive to buy which is why I stick with the cushion covers - the backing and zip are already fitted on. I get them from Amazon. J’nan

  11. I'm making a quilt for my grandson's first birthday in December. I am using scraps from a quilt I made for his Dad (my middle son) years ago and also some from his Uncle (my oldest son). I don't get fancy like the quilts you have shown. Those are beautiful art - like making a mosaic out of fabric! Mine are memories sewn together to snuggle under.

  12. Thank you for sharing that. There are some beauties there. I loved the sampler with the deer and tree in the centre - such warm colours . Oh my goodness, SO many sharp points on Mrs Billings Coverlet! So hard to achieve accurately (for me anyway!) and a real tribute to the original. Lovely.

    1. I thought you would like this.
I doubt I could even join squares together evenly!

  13. A lot of work and creativity went into those quilts. My daughter is the quilter as was my mother. I should share a photo of the quilt daughter made for our 50th wedding anniversary.

  14. I wouldn't have the patience to try myself. However, like you, I can admire them. The remembrance one is simply stunning, and so moving.

  15. What lovely quilts and what a delicious variety of colors and patterns! I'm a quilter and for the last 30 years have been making quilts of various sizes, some seasonal, and some for holidays. It's too much fun and there are no quilt police! By the way, the little girl in one of the quilt is named, in the quilting world, as "Sunbonnet Sue"!
My hands refuse to knit or crochet, so I am impressed by those who can.

  18. The quilts are stunning. I've made a couple of small cot size quilts years ago, but they were very simple indeed!

  19. What stunning quilts and so far beyond my capabilities that I am in awe of how long they probably took to make.

    God bless.

  21. Wow - some really beautiful quilts in there. I don't have the patience! Mum wanted to learn and after she retired she took a class at the college. When she would come visit she would buy lots of fabric as it's cheaper here. She made lots of beautiful quilts, all hand pieced and hand quilted. She made more than I even knew of. We found them after she had passed away. I brought some back with me and even gave one to my new granddaughter. She plays on it and lovely to see her using something my Mum made.

  22. I've never had the urge to quilt either, but I do appreciate how beautiful some of them are. Jane (Frugal Queen) is still an avid quilter and makes them regularly to donate to charities where she lives.
