The Last Saturday in October or Where Did The Week Go?

Last Saturday I popped out to where they have the Sunday boot sale to look at an Antique Fayre - it was raining so only a couple of outside stalls and not many inside either. I'm glad I waited until 9am so didn't have to pay to get in! It was open to dealers before 9 for £5 - I wonder if it was worthwhile for them. Didn't see anything of interest but did say Hello to my cousin who had a stall there.

I know someone in blogland likes this Hornsea  pottery, can't remember who. There was another stall with several pieces too and  a stall full of Portmeirion - which I thought had gone out of fashion as I'd found two bits at car -boot sales but the lady said some people are still collecting.

On Sunday DiL had booked a table at a local pub to celebrate Son's birthday. YD and EGD came over from the coast. Lovely to get the Suffolk parts of the family together for a few hours.

I've not been to Sainsburys for ages as it's the wrong side of Ipswich but as I was in town for the dentist ( just a check up - thankfully) on Monday I went a mile further  for some of their cheap 'cooking bacon'...the name amuses me as surely all bacon has to be cooked but their packs of offcuts and strange shapes are £1 for a 500g a pack. I split these up into 8 smaller amounts before freezing.

In theory Asda should have something similar, but in Stowmarket they never do.

After the wet Saturday and dull Sunday there was some good sunny weather during the week and I got some more garden bits cut back and half filled the garden waste bin - Yet Again but there's still a ton of Buddleia to tackle. Couldn't get the grass cut with my battery mower - too much moisture, if it stays like this I shall have to call up BiL with his motor mower as the blinkin' grass is still growing.

I moved the craft shelf unit in my bedroom to make a space for a table and got a hand to move it in from the garage to the corner so now I've got somewhere to put and wrap Christmas gifts out of the way. A smaller desk would have been nice but would have meant spending money - which is what I don't want to do as I've spent enough on the living room recently.

My reading this week  is the latest Whitstable Pearl crime novel 'Murder at the Allotment' by Julie Wassmer. I may be wrong but these seem to have got more 'cosy' since they were turned into a TV series. On TV I've been watching a little of very odd US series on the free Pluto TV channel called Scorpion which is about a group of eccentric geniuses who take on solving complex problems for the government. It ran from 2014 - 2018.

It's the last Saturday car-boot at Needham today -  except for a special Christmas one in December - weather permitting -  so I'd better nip down there and give it a look.

Have a lovely weekend whatever you are doing and I'll be back Monday.

Sue

  1. I think you could adjust the title of this to ask where has the year gone! I quite like Hornsea and have quite a few pieces. Sadly the rubber seals have all perished over time

    1. I'm hanging on to 2024 for another two months!

  2. I love Hornsea, but drastically downsized on retirement, and my collection is 99% Cornrose pattern now. There is NO Cornrose on that Display! I have purchased replacement rubber seals online for my storage jars.
I think Morrisons cooking bacon is good value -but not always available
The year has gone really quickly for me too. Keep warm and well, my friend 👍❤️

    1. I knew someone liked Hornsea - I'm not a fan - it's too dark coloured for me

  3. I kept seeing the Whitstable Pearl books in charity shops, but never got around to buying one. When the tv series started I thought I would give it a go and, although I watched all of the first series, I never really took to it and haven't bothered watching the 2nd series at all.

    1. I guess I'll keep reading them. Not sure if both series have been on free TV channels yet? I shall investigate

  4. 'Cooking bacon' is a strange term - what else would you do with it? I've got some bits of Hornsea that belonged to my parents. I never use them.

    1. Sometimes the 'cooking bacon ' had nice chunky bacon steaks - not this time but still a bargain and perfectly good

  5. Check out your local auction for a small desk. Brown furniture is dirt cheap still.

Antique Fayre - well, it looks the sort that folk walk around and don't spend any money at. When there is a lot of china (which most folk don't have room for anymore) buyers are thin on the ground. People do still collect Portmeirion, but the Hornsea isn't really in vogue these days. I can remember doing a few small Fairs like that back in the day - you were the free entertainment!

    1. Yep - I walked round and spent nothing and at 9am there were only a handful of people there - mostly the stallholders!

  6. It sure isn't very crowded at that sale. Antiques aren't as popular here as they used to be.
I can't believe we are almost finished with the year! Once we hit November, it flies by with the Holidays' busy times. I'm not ready yet!

    1. I'm also not ready for year end yet. DiL was saying how long there is left of the school term - only a few weeks.

  7. I feel like this month has gone by quicker than others, however the whole year has sort of disappeared very quickly.

    God bless.

  8. You never know what you will find at antique/thrift/estate sales. That said, it is fun to have a look around. Your pub meal with family to celebrate a birthday sounds delightful.
The month has flown by. Like you, I have lots to do to close the gardens/lawns. The leaves are falling and blowing around today. Tomorrow I will get the J.-Deere out and mow.

  9. Oh that looks like the sort of antique fair where the sellers outnumber the buyers and you feel guilty for not buying anything ... well I always do because I know what it's like to be on the selling side of the counter when there's hardly any customers spending.

Nope, I have never understood the term 'cooking bacon' at all, surely it could be called 'tasty offcuts' or 'bargain bacon' or something similar.

  10. Bought a pack of “cooking bacon” last week as we were cooking for chicken pot pies for 22 people. The pack was all perfectly good back bacon.

  11. I had some Hornsea when we were first married but gave it away years ago. I think sellers must be finding it hard just now-one of the local boot sales stopped a couple of years ago as the farm owner said it was more bother than it was worth to him. They now grow pumpkins in the field. Catriona

  12. The year is quickly rolling down a steep hill I fear. Christmas has been on my mind, the first rich fruit cake fruit is soaking in some alcohol and I’ve at last ordered some large bins on wheels in which to store decor which I use throughout the year and don’t want in the loft. A new organised me would be welcome indeed!! x
