Second-hand Book Sale

I said No Spend November wouldn't be taken very seriously!

Instead of trekking down the A12 to Colchester for the big NSPCC  second-hand book sale on Saturday, which I've visited every year for many years,  I went just across to near the coast for the much, much smaller charity book sale at Westleton - raising money for their village hall. It's just a shame they are both the same weekend.

I  picked out these few to look through- one perhaps for interesting bits for cutting up for my old fashioned scrapbooks. Plus another book I'll write about later in the week. It was £1 to get in and the 5 books were £4. I don't think I've seen any of them before as they are all several years old.

Had breakfast before going out so didn't need to partake of the coffee and cakes!.......sadly.

No spend (?) November so far

Direct Debits                          £242
Book Sale                               £    5 }
Church donation                    £     1 }      My accounting means these all go in the Charity part
British Legion Poppy Appeal £    2 }        of the account book.

Back soon

  1. I made a scrapbook for my first Great Niece as I remembered my pleasure in the one that Grandma made me. It was well received and enjoyed by all three girls in that family who have inherited their parent’s love of history and family connection. But I didn’t get enthusiastic enough to create for the other great nieces and nephews😜. Margaret from New Zealand

  2. I should make a scrapbook ot two for my 2 granddaughters from Mary Engelbeit's old magazines. I have those in a bag that's not been gone through for awhile. I like older books and ones that I got free. Then take them to library in town to donate in area. Later will be sold and money stays in the library.

  3. The books look good. They might even be out of print now.
Have you considered contacting both organisations and suggesting they work together so as not to be on the same weekend? Just a thought.

    1. Out of print for many years I reckon.
I doubt anyone in Westleton even knows about the huge book sale down in Essex, not many people are mad enough to go from here right down there!

  4. Here, scrapbooking is a photograph album, pretty much, with pretty borders and things. These scrapbooks you make, are they the same?

    1. No mine are the old fashioned sort that we did as children, just cutting and sticking anything interesting - mine have themed pages and are mostly old fashioned pictures/postcards etc

  5. I did go to the NSPCC book sale on Saturday. Perhaps we didn’t get there early enough but there seemed to be fewer books this year. Still came away with a couple of bags of books.

    1. Oh well done, I thought there were less last year but decided it was because they had more space - I might go next year - completely forgot to look up date for the one at Acton and missed it.

  6. I've not scrapbooked seriously for a long time, I was tempted a year or so ago and started saving pretty bits of paper and images. Then I had a change of heart and they all got tipped into the paper recycling bin.
My first ever serious scrapbook collection was one filled with images of Kevin Keegan cut from my Dad's newspaper, sometimes before he had read it ... he used to get a bit cross for some reason. 🤔

    1. We always got a scrapbook and glue for Christmas and sometimes some of those 'Victorian 'scraps - we used to cut out things from Christmas cards and the Kays catalogue!
I had an Ipswich Town FC scrapbook when I was about 12 - also just cuttings from the local paper.

  8. Lovely selection to look through and for a great price. I scrapbooked for years starting as a child who cut things out of magazines. Now I haven’t done any for years but still save lots of photos on my phone where I would have saved paper copies before. Catriona

  9. I still have a copy of the Richard Mabey one. They look interesting reads. I've just been to the Library and found that the book I REALLY want to read is in the locked stack there . . . I can only peruse it in the Library. Will do that After The Fair.

    1. Richard Mabey did more early books than I knew and must have been on TV a lot too.
Hope you get time to get to your library for a nice reading session

  11. I just don't buy books for myself as I have a wonderful library. I sometimes buy books for the grandkids but always at resale shops.
I've never made scrapbooks like you described. What do you do with them when they are full?

  13. Whoopy doo! I Love walled gardens. I looked up the Susan Campbell book to see if I could ask for it for a Christmas present. Yes! Then I followed up on the publisher. What a treasure trove. You've made my day.

  15. You found some good books at bargain prices. Raising money for the village hall is a really good cause. I buy books about gardening. My latest purchase was about Japanese gardening, and it has given me some new design ideas.

  18. Nice books! I have some I bought (used) specifically to use in scrapbook type things, but I can't bring myself to cut them up! I really need to. I want to make a nature journal of some sort and I absolutely cannot draw!
