St Peter, Westleton

Westleton is a village just a few miles inland from the North Sea at Dunwich.

It was a gloomy morning when I went to the book sale and then to the church so inside photos are not very good. On a sunny day it would be really light and bright inside as everywhere is white including the chancel ceiling.

The church is one of the few thatched churches in Suffolk and  also has no tower. The original tower fell down in 1776 and a small wooden replacement was destroyed by bombing in WWII.

I like their hanging globe electric lights. The pews are from the C19 restoration and have low doors.

The altar cloth is lovely. Westleton has a Wild Flower Festival every year although I've never been. I'll try and remember to look out for a date for it in 2025

Piscina and Sedilia date from the C14

Stained glass window featuring St Felix and St George

A grand piano is something not often seen in a Suffolk village church

A reminder that life could be short in the C18 .

  2. A thatch roof is not something you expect to see on a church of all things! Lovely stained glass photos as you usually do take. Hope you find the Flower Festival dates!

    1. I think this is about the 6th thatched church I've visited - No slate in Suffolk!

  3. A very elegant church and the thatched roof unusual considering the cost of upkeep.

  4. I once went to Westleton for some kittens - went for one British Blue and came back with two. Bought from an elderly, very eccentric lady living in an isolated bungalow. I don't remember the village itself or seeing it and remember thinking it was all very remote. We stopped on the way back and took the kittens in the cage on to a beach. It was one of the hottest days of the year in a very hot summer in the late 1980s and not a good day for travelling with kittens.

  8. This is a lovely church. A church with a thatched roof, wildflower altar cloth and a grand piano is delightful. The stained glass is impressive too.
Attending the Wildflower Festival sounds like good fun. Propagating a wildflower garden has lots of appeal to me.
