This always causes lots of comments about it being a waste of money! which I shall ignore! so don't bother!
I love to have a copy for the two weeks of Christmas and New Year and having given up my regular subscription in February, after a couple of years, it was a no brainer. I popped into the village shop for my copy this year.
I've perused, with my highlighter pen, and found lots of festive Christmas quizzes every day. House of Games, Celebrity Mastermind, Only Connect and then the usual Christmas version of University Challenge with famous or not so famous but clever alumni.
There's a Christmas Special episode of Madame Blanc on Christmas eve and then on Christmas Day Doctor Who and the Strictly Christmas Special. I used to watch Call the Midwife but it makes me cry too much now and if the 2022 version of The Railway Children is anything like the original from 1970 then I daren't watch that either - it has me in floods from the start!
Death in Paradise is back in the sunshine of Saint Marie on the 22nd but I've never got into the Beyond Paradise crime series with Kris Marshall set in Cornwall (or maybe Devon) but the most recent spin off set in Australia ' Return to Paradise' I thought was much better and the the final episode of 6 is on the 27th and also on Friday I'll probably watch The Big Fat Quiz of the Year which has become a bit of an institution despite Jimmy Carr! who is also back with a new series of 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown.
On Jan 1st and 2nd is the very final 2 part Vera story with Brenda Blethyn and there's a documentary about the the making and story of all the series on the 3rd.
I searched through for the usual showing of the Christmas edition of The Good Life and found it on BBC4 next Monday. I don't really need to watch it as I reckon I know it off by heart!
So it's mainly quizzes and crime for me ................sorted for the duration!
I'm very glad of my TV to keep me company, it would be a lonely time without it.
Back Tomorrow
Sue
No complaints here. It's what keeps you happy that's important.
ReplyDeleteSimple pleasures!
DeleteI always think it's kind of fun to have the Radio Times. I think I've said this before but it was one of the few times we got it!
ReplyDeleteAnd when I was young too - of course back then you had to have two magazines - one for BBC and one for ITV
DeleteIf you like it, go for it! Well, you do. And you enjoy your planning. I love your choices: crime and quizzes!
ReplyDeleteCrime and Quizzes - nothing else needed!
DeleteLovely - and agree π― about the Christmas RT x
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
I don't think I'll subscribe again but its good to have once a year
DeleteI always buy RT too. And good for you Sue about your fun attitude to Christmas after your No Spend November. I'm glad you splurged out on that lovely footstool!
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased with the foot stool - it fits in perfectly
DeleteWe buy Christmas RT. Looks like there's plenty on that's worth watching this year. Have you seen Box of Delights serial is on iplayer?
ReplyDeleteI've never watched Box of Delights - I ought to try it
DeleteI always used to buy the Christmas Radio Times, just for nostalgia. But I've realised it's no longer worth it for me. I don't watch enough TV.
ReplyDeleteBut I love how certain things make our Christmasses. For me it's having a tin of Quality Street, even though I prefer to eat Roses chocolates :)
The TV keeps me company now and quizzes keep my brain working!
DeleteThe minute Jenny Agutter says "Daddy oh my Daddy" I'm done for. Anyway, no condemnation from me, I shall be enjoying my copy too, and it looks as if our viewing is much of a muchness. I am sure that when I was a child it was one copy for all, now they seem to be regional.
ReplyDeleteRT is one of the three things that make Christmas for me.
That's the line that always has me reaching for the tissues too.
DeleteI'm gone way before that!
DeleteGlad you found Vera! I use RT to tape what I want to watch and play back when I want. I couldn't be doing with just switching the TV on and watching whatever is on.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Vera could carry on without her with a change of name like Morse etc
DeleteWell not a games person myself. But I have started watching 'The Ink Black Heart'. The new Strike series. The revues though give it a thumbs down. As for RT I catch glimpses of it through my news feed. It was fun it its day but we have such a large canvas of watching on other shows that it has lost me.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why the new Strike isn't popular with the critics?
DeleteI seem have little time for the television box these days, usually just to knackered after work and if I do manage to wrest to remote of G I usually fall asleep midway through whatever I am watching. Perhaps it’s an age thing but I tend to find myself seeking other entertainment than what used to be the ‘magic box’ for me. Things like sleeping whilst reading, dosing off watching You Tube, sneaking off to the workshop for a quick nap under the guise of trying to repair somebodies ill used lawnmower…etc……
ReplyDeleteI'm usually reading and watching at the same time - rather than sleeping! Multi tasking!
DeleteWe have Readly but I always buy the Festive Edition of the RT for all the reasons you have just given. I love taking time to highlight what I’d like to watch/record and you can’t do that on Readly. Catriona
ReplyDeleteI like all the articles in the RT too
DeleteI used to enjoy the Radio Times - it was an entertaining magazine and obviously still is. I remember my father going through it and marking what to watch and that was long before the choices there are today.
ReplyDeleteWe like the TV listings magazine which comes with Saturdays Daily Mail.
ReplyDeleteThe local regional paper has TV listings on a Saturday, but doesn't cover everything and has got silly expensive now
DeleteI don't watch as much TV as I used to and even tho my cable TV has more channels, there often seems like there is less on that I want to watch!
ReplyDeleteGlad you have got your viewing list ready for the Holiday season. Enjoy!
It would be a lonely time for me without my Blog reading! Thank you very much for your wonderful contributions to that, Sue!
Thank you for those kind words, I enjoy writing so will keep going as long as I can come up with ideas
DeleteWe are far behind in the Vera series as we don't subscribe to whichever channel airs the new ones, but even rewatching the episodes is as good as the first time because we rarely remember who the culprit is! We have many seasons to look forward to, assuming they'll eventually be aired on the channel we do have. Even so, I gasped in horror when learning the series is to end.
ReplyDeleteYes, Brenda Blethyn decided to retire from Vera but they managed this last 2 parter
DeleteThe Ink Black Heart has started with the introduction of quite a large list of characters; I'm sticking with it though as I like the two leads and particularly the office manager, Pat!
ReplyDeleteThe size of the books are too big to contemplate reading. I was glad I'd not tried reading this new one as I'd have been lost due to the mention of gaming which I don't really understand
DeleteI have always had the Christmas edition of Radio Times, but then I've had my subscription for years now. I did have a short break but then I realised that as I like the articles and puzzles it was worth the price of the subscription, which makes it half the cover price and of course it's delivered. Definitely worth it for me. π
ReplyDeleteMy sub went up to full price and no way to change it so I gave up!
DeleteMine went up after the original offer but it's only £90 a year, which makes each magazine well under £2 a copy. I'm happy with that. π
DeleteThey took £52 for a quarter of the year here!! Much too much
DeleteThe 2022 Railway Children is woke and will not make you cry. It is nothing at all like the first one.
ReplyDeleteMight not bother with it anyway
DeleteYour magazine sounds filled with lots of good information and puzzles/games. Entirely worth the price.
ReplyDeleteAs for the nay sayers...there is always "delete."
The moaners were put off by my 'Don't Bother'! so they didn't!
DeleteOh yes! It’s a bit of a family tradition here and takes pride of place on the coffee table! My copy fell into my son’s trolley on Monday when he was shopping. And then it’s out with the highlighter going through it to see what appeals….and it’s similar to you!
ReplyDeleteIn return I bought him and his wife a Christmas copy of Country Life…(which some say is extravagant!) but it is the double issue …and it is an escape! You do have to wade through photos of many ‘prestigious’ properties at the start of the mag but then there are some great articles and also Christmas quizzes etc..and it has the most delightful cover this year!
Happy Christmas! ππ ππ ππ ππ
The covers of some magazines are much more appealing than the insides!
DeleteEnjoy your RT and Happy Christmas to you too
