One day the garden was full of puffball baby Bluetits, little things shouting for food which the parents were giving them from the sunflower heart feeder. I couldn't get a photo as nothing sat still long enough.
A week or so later it was the twittering of baby Goldfinches and parents, the babies were being fed from the Niger seed feeder. Neither birds had nests in the garden but they seem to have brought the fledglings here for their meals.
Thank you to everyone for comments yesterday about the nearby growing crops and vegetarian/ omnivore. My diet includes very little meat now - definitely no beef, but it's good to have a choice. I've lived all my life among fields and farms so grown up knowing about all sorts of crops and how things work.

Bluetits thrive in our garden,they are probably the most prolific along with the sparrows. We've seen woodpeckers twice this week which is always a nice treat.

It's lovely to hear the birds. There was a lot of singing in the early hours this morning, but our dawn choruses are noticeably quieter than they were a couple of decades ago.
ReplyDeleteAlan stepped out of his patio doors yesterday and there were about 20 baby hedge sparrows on our bird table all tucking into some tiny crumbs he had put out earlier. Up to now we have seen only the parents in next doors hedges but fledging season seems to be here.
ReplyDeleteI love to see the birds at this stage. The other day it was a cardinal as big as his parent, being fed on a low branch near a bird feeder.
ReplyDeleteThe birds are busy, caring lovingly for their young. Seeing the young birds in flight and at your feeders will be fun to watch too.

ReplyDeleteI have a Niger thistle feeder but I can't get the goldfinches to pay any attention to it! In fact I eventually took it down.
