Small Car-Boot Sale Finds

Car boot sales recently are either cancelled due to rain or waterlogged ground or if they do happen I walk round, see the same old stuff and come home with nothing - or half-a-dozen eggs if the lady who sells some of her own lovely fresh eggs has any ...........but mostly nothing.

So it was quite unusual to find this vase in one of the boxes from a house clearance person. I don't enjoy rootling around in their boxes down on the ground - not good for my back at all, but spotted this and it wasn't cracked or chipped. It's a Portmeirian vase in the Botanic Garden collection and features a Cistus. I've got a tatty looking Cistus or Rock Rose in the bed out the front of the bungalow. I keep cutting back dead bits so it is getting smaller.

This companies' pieces were once quite popular and expensive but less so now. I only paid £1 and saw another but straight sided vase on a stall a few weeks later. One Portmeirion vase is enough so I didn't buy it. My other pieces from this company are a planter pot with sweet peas (second- hand local table top sale many years ago) and my Holly and Ivy things of course.

I also found this tin of 20 blank notelets or greetings cards. I've popped them away for a Christmas present. These were £2.

Back Tomorrow

  1. I have one Portmerion Botanic Garden pot. It holds a medium sized flowerpot very nicely on the bathroom sill. But one is enough

    1. I was nearly tempted by the other vase I saw, but don't need more dust collectors. I've seen lots of storage jars too for sale at boot sales but don't need them either

  2. Carboot sales are great for buying rather than selling. Lovely vase or vaze if you live over the pond.

    1. Yes it all depends on how the economy is going, at the moment the whole world is selling and not buying!

  3. Pretty! Our local garden centre stocks Portmeirion and at one time a woman used to buy a new piece there *every week*! She must have a big house.

    1. Blimey, I doubt I would ever buy new when so much is around second hand

    1. British company, quite well known for their botanical designs. Still in business - and still quite expensive new

  7. My dear old mum loved portmerion. The vase is very pretty and the cards useful for your gift stash.

    1. I don't think it is as popular as it once was, there's quite a lot around second hand now.

  9. No boot sales down here, sometimes I see a garage sale but they are few and far between - op shops (charity) are the thing but they are becoming expensive. The high end stuff gets priced almost as high as new

    1. Same here for charity shops - some things are silly expensive.
One Charity shop closed partly due to lack of volunteers but another has opened. So much stuff!

  10. Nice find! Botanical patterns on vases and plates are lovely. Prices trend high in our local thrift shops. I thought about bringing things to one shop and they wanted me to join their program for $25 in order to provide donations and/or sales items. They also wanted to inspect each item for suitability. I decided this is more complicated than I want and simply went elsewhere to drop off all items.

    1. What a complicated way of taking in donations, don't blame you for going elsewhere - paying to donate seems very strange.

    2. I cannot imagine being charged money to give things to charity. I've never heard of such a thing!

  12. I believe the Rock Rose is not a long lived plant.

    1. Yes it has that reputation - previous owners planted it not long before selling so 4 or 5 years

    God bless.

  15. I love the vase too. My dinner plates are Portmeirion Botanic Garden although they are 'seconds' quality. I also have a jug which I use at Christmas time. I wouldn't mind a vase but never see anything like that in our local charity shops and there are no boot sales here. Good finds!
