20th March St Cuthbert's Day + Day 14 V.R.E

I've not used the Saints book for a blog post lately but when I found today was St Cuthbert's Day then he had to get a mention.

Wiki has lots about him HERE - too much to copy but below is a brief history from my book.

Known as one of the greatest English saints and missionaries he became a monk of Melrose Abbey. At the time ruled by Abbot Eata who Venerable Bede called "the gentlest and simplest of men". The prior of Melrose, named Boisil taught Cuthbert the Bible and the pattern of a devout life and when Boisil died Cuthbert took over as prior.
Cuthbert rode miles on horseback around the countryside preaching but really preferred the life of a hermit and got permission to live on the Island of Farne for 8 years but in the year 684 he was appointed Bishop of Hexham but later swapped with Eata to become Bishop of Lindisfarne and then moved to the island of Inner Farne. He died in AD687

The Value Range Meal for day 14 was one of the Fish Curries from the freezer that I made right at the beginning of the month. I didn't bother with a photo as it was the same as the first portion HERE  although actually not the same because curry is always better reheated and it had tons more flavour this time. Still one left for next week.

Running total £49.22 + £2 for box of frothy coffees as  it's the end of second week = £51.22

  3. Curries (and stews) are better after a day or freezing, so that the flavours really come out.

    St Cuthbert's burial place in Durham Cathedral - so simple, but such presence. I went there when Gabby got her degree.

  6. Agree completely about being better the next day or after freezing. Same thing about freezing cheese. Yesterday we had some blue cheese that had been frozen. It was quite ho hum before freezing - fantastic yesterday.

    2. Nor did I. A friend suggested it, and I must admit I was sceptical but gave it a try. I recently bought a huge wheel of Baron Bigot (a superb Brie style cheese made in Bungay) - froze it in portions. It is excellent

  7. Quite few flavors develop with time. Soul's often better the second day. Good old Cuthbert, I lived the early part of my life around Durham, went to courses at the University when I was in high school. Stayed in the castle!

  9. You are doing well with your VRE challenge. I have never had left over curry, and am trying to imagine it tasting better than it does on the first day. I do love curries.

    You sent me off on quite a read. I have often heard of the Vernerable Bede, but did not know much about him. IMy exhusband insists that the world is less than 6000 years old, and I've always marvled at that willful disregard of all scientific truths I was surprised to read that this comes directly from Bede himself. As scientifically as his mind worked, I wonder if he would have recalibarated his thinking based on all the scientific discoveries since his time? I think he would have which makes the modern day claims look foolish. Esp. since my ex is in a scientific fiield . I marvel. He used to believe in dinosaurs. Now he does not.

    Anyways, I like Bede's poem, purported to be brought forth from his death bed.
    "Fore the enforced-walk ‖ none comes to be
    wise to malice ‖ more than him that must
    with mindfulness think back, ‖ before his going hence,
    on what his breath’s ‖ bad, good, right or evil,
    after death-day’s ending, ‖ on judgement comes to be."

  10. I love curry as well and the taste really does get better with each heating. Trader Joe's (TJ) sells tasty curry sauce and I usually stir fry chicken or beef with onions and peppers and then add the TJ sauce and simmer. I serve this with rice. It freezes well too.
