Big Spender at the Car-boot Sale

I went mad at last  Saturday's Car-Boot sale and spent the grand total of £6 plus 75p on two giant tomatoes - forgot to get tomatoes when I was shopping and there was only one vegetable seller at the car boot with only these giants.

I was pleased to spot another of the Little Toller Books Nature Classic reprints and paid £1 - I've now got a collection of 10 - whoops!
The packs of  grow your own cress seeds for children  were 3 for £1 (2 grandchildren to be entertained here next Sunday) and the handy set of measuring cup/spoons were also £1. I've never had a full set like this before.
But my favourite find was a very old scrapbook full of all sorts of pictures and cuttings going back to the 1930's/40s. I had to pay £3 as it wasn't in one of the house clearance boxes but being sold by more of an antique seller lady - a lady who sells antiques rather than a very old woman!

It's got some interesting pages. I'm going to take out my favourite pictures and add them to my own scrapbooks.

Had my first-of-the-year whippy 99 ice cream too. It was a bit odd having ice cream for breakfast at 8.30 am, and will probably be the first and last time - but the sun was shining and it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Back Soon

  1. Nothing wrong with icecream for breakfast! LOVE that scrap book - I'd have bought that too. A step into the past. I have measuring spoons and use them all the time - mine are all bright colours! The grandkids should have fun planting the seeds and quick results too. Well done with the Adrian Bell book. Nothing decent like that turns up at car boot sales here! They're all Tesco offerings of the sort I would never read. Danielle Steele, Barbara Taylor Bradford, and Chick Lit.

    1. The problem was that I went home and still had my usual toast and coffee breakfast too!
The Little Toller book was a rare find - most are what you say above or those books that can be classified as 'I had a really hard life growing up!'

  2. Love the scrapbook! What a good find. I like Little Toller books very much, I too have a small collection. Little Toller had a bookshop in Beaminster for a couple of years and it was such a good shop, all their books and very well chosen additions as well. Unfortunately they don't run it anymore I don't think but it's still a nice bookshop. I rarely find Little Toller or Persephone books in charity shops but when I do it's a good day!

    1. I still scan the charity shop shelves for grey Persephone but it's been a long time since I found one in a charity shop. The last one found was from a charity book sale in Nov last year - they have their own label on my posts so I can look and see where I found one!

  3. one of my first holiday jobs was serving Mr Whippy at the local grocery store. It's something you can only do so much of before you go off it! The only thing I do remember is one large family coming every day for a fortnight for six Mr Whippy 99's. They were a lovely family, with four very well mannered children, and also had a small baby. I could tell they were not very well off, and these ices were a huge treat for them, so as a discount I used to put a tiny blob of ice cream on a cone for them for nothing, so the baby wasn't left out. On the last day of their holiday, my boss found out what I'd done and she wiped the floor with me!

    1. What a meanie of a boss!
It must be a skill to get the right amount of whippy ice-cream into a cone without it falling over. I noticed that a whippy with two flakes was called a 'bunny'!

    2. if you think swirling the ice cream into the cone was a skill, you should try getting the mix into the machine!!! It came in a huge bag of powder to be combined with just the right volume of water! Nightmare.

    1. They are the only ice creams I like - don't even fancy Magnums nowadays and as for ice lollies - no

  7. That scrapbook looks fascinating. I used to LOVE Mr Whippy ice-creams, sadly I have yet to see a van selling the dairy-free option, which is available. I have always said if I won the lottery I would buy my own van and have a Mr Whippy for dessert every night. Perhaps I should actually buy a lottery ticket!!

  8. That's a wonderful scrapbook. I wonder where the maker got all of those pictures. You had a good day at the sales, Sue!
Also, I meant to tell you that I love the colors in your header!

    1. Some of the cuttings are postcards but other bits seem to be on paper that's thicker than magazines so I'm not sure

  10. Nice finds and the grandchildren are going to love the seeds. Good plan.
Is Whippy soft serve ice cream? We have a few Dairy Queen shops that serve soft serve which I am thinking is also Whippy.
The 30-40's pictures are fun to look at and imagine the past again.

  11. What a nice memory of my mom this gave me. She died 20 years ago this month, age 64. Like her father, she LOVED ice cream (which reminds me to buy some of her favourite, maple walnut, to have in her memory in a few days) and whenever my boys stayed overnight with her, she'd let them (and herself, of course) have ice cream for breakfast. I think I'll do that on this anniversary too!

  12. What a wonderful scrapbook!! I wish it was warm enough to have ice cream for breakfast here. I hope you enjoyed your morning at the car boot sale.

    God bless.

  13. Some lovely finds!
I love that scrapbook. I think it's well worth the money. Looks as though it will be enjoyable to go through.
We went to some garage sales with daughter and found some really cheap items. Seems the prices near her are a lot more reasonable than around where we are! It's also strange as most of them start on a Wednesday!
