Saturday 12th

More tennis watching all week. Yesterday's semi's were very different, in the first there was a good fight between Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz but then Djokovic was knocked out easily by Jannik Sinner, the number 1 seed and so Wimbledon is over 😢 bar the finals but there are the two British guys in the men's doubles final, which is on before the ladies singles finals today and Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid defending their title in the men's wheelchair doubles final, also today. It's unusual for the Ladies and Men's singles finals to be scheduled later on Centre Court today and tomorrow (not before 4pm it says). Usually they are up first.

There was more heat this week although not too bad Tuesday so there were 10 of us at our Keep Moving group. The temperatures here  weren't as hot as a couple of weeks ago and not as hot as other parts of the country - high 20s ℃ (mid 80s) ℉  rather than low 30s  and  cooler at night so not too bad for sleeping with freezer icepacks wrapped in tea-towels and  gel cool pads working well

Apart from all the normal house work jobs I don't seem to have done much or achieved much this week, although I did make another batch of the Sweet and Sour Cucumber pickle. Strimming round the veg bed edges was quickly done but haven't needed to cut the grass this week. Getting some of the weeds out of the driveway shingle out the front was on the list again - but it was too hot for that job.
Shopping was only a quick very early trip to Aldi - don't need many veg now with courgettes and beans doing well here and beetroot from BiL's garden. I found milk had gone up in price again. From £1.45 just a few months ago to £1.55 and this week £1.65 for 4 pints semi-skimmed. That means cheese and butter prices will also rise soon.

Obligatory photo of the first (almost) ripe tomato! Mini Plum variety

and the size of Giant plum variety Big Mama - still green - when they are ripe they'll be made into Red Hot Relish.

I've now done 5 out of the 6 weeks of the arthritis exercise and management course. I shall be glad to finish as going to something that starts at 1 o'clock  -  neither morning or afternoon  -  seems to spoil the whole day! (and THAT surely is a sign of getting old). Next I can either see a physio again, carry on just doing the exercises at home or do another 6 week  general exercise thing. That starts at 11am so a better time.

In between everything else there has been reading of course, two library books were abandoned, so now reading from my shelves until mobile van visit toward the end of the month - there are already nine ready for me to collect.

And that was the week  finished again.

Have a good weekend, not sure what's happening apart from staying out of the heat and watching the last of the tennis. It doesn't seem long ago that I would be sitting out and enjoying the sun but they say skin gets thinner as you age and I certainly feel burnt even with Factor 50, so best to stay in.

  1. I have to say, driving back from Llandovery on Thursday when I had neglected to put Factor 50 on, my right arm felt on fire. I have a good T-shirt tan (and lily white legs!!) but I think what you say about your skin thinning (can vouch for that) and the heat of the sun rings true with me. I felt half cooked on Thursday.

I did my shop yesterday - £29 in Aldi, but then by the time I'd got cat food, a pack of beers (Danny here today and may well fancy one), ice cream etc from Tesco, that was another £29 . . . Prices have gone up thumpingly again - the BIG block of cheese I used to pay £3.95 for was £5.50 in Co-op the other day (though they are always a chunk dearer than everywhere else). Cat food increased hugely from pre-Covid days, and something else I needed had gone up a pound. Can't remember what it was now but I was cross about it.

    1. I used to sit out for hours and loved the sun but not now, I don't really tan now - just go blotchy!

  2. Being neither a mad dog nor an English man I stayed out of the midday sun... and the morning sun... and the afternoon sun...
Also got very little except reading and watching tennis done.
It's quite cooling reading books set in Iceland or Canadian winter

  3. Getting any outside job done was an achievement this week so well done! We're going into the garden for picking etc in the evenings and like you don't sit out there unless we're under a big parasol. Our courgettes are coming thick and fast now and I'm determined to use them up, looking for some tasty recipes to ring the changes.

    1. Only took 10 minutes to whiz the strimmer round the edges - that was enough heat

  4. This weather is not for me at all and I have done inside jobs and read a lot. I even rented Mad about the Boy, the latest Bridget Jones film, last night and sat in the living room with the blinds closed and a cold drink watching it. Catriona

    1. When not watching tennis I've been watching a FBI violent US thing called Quantico on the 5 catch up channel! There are some violent police type things that come out of the US!

  5. I think the tennis single finals are later because of the heat, the men's could go all the way to 5 sets, hours on court, best not in heat of afternoon, we both enjoyed Alcaraz/Fritz match, Sinner really did thrash Djokovic.

    1. The Sinner/Djokovic match was an odd one. I kept expecting D to come back and he even got the crowd on his side as they wanted a longer match. But the Sunday final will hopefully be an epic!

  6. So, the Djokovic era comes to an end now? He's made his millions - time for fresh blood.

  7. I know exactly what you mean about mid-day or even early afternoon appointments spoiling the whole day. I prefer to make appointments for first thing in the morning whenever possible. For one you are usually seen on time and two, the rest of your day is your own.

The ONLY bit of tennis that I have watched was the interlude with the ball girl standing in for one of the doubles pairs. She was very good.

    1. When daughter was working at the Opticians she said she always knew that older people would never want their appointments in the afternoon and they could never have an appointment if they already had something else happening on the same day. Now I'm the same!

  8. Agree completely about middle of day appointments.
I've just abandoned a library book too, so as soon as the weather cools it'll be a trip to the library for me.

  9. I hate middle of the day appointments. You can't get much done before them, and once they are finished, you are not left with much time to get anything done. Ugh.

  10. I am looking forward to the tennis finals too.
The exercise classes sound good and the 11 AM schedule is much better.
It is humid and warm with light showers; much better than the high heat we had earlier.
Your tomatoes look really good. I am harvesting cherry tomatoes for salads. My large tomatoes are still solidly green.

  12. I'm impressed that you can do your Keep Moving group without any air conditioning when it is warm. I go to Zumba classes but we are in a gym with giant fans and air conditioning to keep us cool!
Your tomatoes will be yummy soon!

  13. I picked one small cucumber a couple of days ago, and keep watching tomatoes. Hopefully things start ripening very soon.

    God bless.

  16. Some are saying they felt short changed with the brevity of yesterday's Ladies Final, I say they were privileged to watch history in the making! Hope you enjoyed it, and today's Gentlemen's Final tool

  17. Yes, I’ve noticed the price of milk creeping up…I hope they pass the price rise to the farmers! Wonderful tomatoes! Lucky you! I’m loving the tennis too! Enjoy Sunday! 😁

  18. My husband hasn't had to cut the lawn either, at our place, because it just isn't growing in this heat. Oh yes, I'm a morning appointment person too. No appointments after 11am for me or my cat! *lol* Love, Andrea xoxo

  19. How I envy your mini plum tomatoes. I think ours must be Big Mama from the photos of yours, Sue. I just caught up with your posts and must say I share your dislike of wasps. They have no purpose, in my view, other than disturbing a quiet meal in the garden. Pesky things. One stung Gray on the mouth last weekend. Painful! Now bees...they are totally different ...I like to hear them buzzing around the garden .

  20. Big Mama tomato looks interesting. I usually grow Roma or San Marzano for cooking.
No, finding middle of the day appointments annoying and the waste of a day isn't a sign of age...it is a sign that they ARE a waste of a day!

I wouldn't mind paying more for milk or fruit and veg if I knew that the increase was going to the producer....
