I wonder how long car boot sales will continue this year. As the weather gets cooler with darker and damper mornings there are noticeably fewer people selling. In theory the big Saturday boot-sale should carry on until 25th October with their one-off Christmas boot sale on the 13th December and the smaller Sunday one will carry on until the ground gets too soggy. It's all weather dependent of course.
At the Saturday boot sale the weekend before last I noticed lots of people had already started to bring along Christmas decorations. One man had a small trailer full of new boxes of huge baubles - which would have needed a huge tree -in a huge room!
A few bits of Halloween stuff too. There's no need to buy new when you have a boot sale to visit.
I spent just £2 that morning with £1 being for a really big cauliflower and the other £1 for these two coasters- yes, more Portmeirion Holly and Ivy Ware! 50p each - what a bargain.
It's been 16 months since I last found something (a bell tree decoration) for my 'Not a Collection' which obviously now IS a collection.
I've been really lucky finding so many pieces second-hand, some are still available new at crazy prices, although they don't seem to make these coasters any more. There's lots available on ebay but I'm sticking to car boot sales and charity shops.
It was a good find which I'll enjoy using through December .
Here's what Debby said last December when I posted about the bell decoration. Love it!
If you put them together, they become a collection. If you scatter them artfully around the house, they are merely decorations.
You're welcome.
Back Soon
I thought about you last week, Sue when I picked up an autumn vase at the charity shop. I'm hoping I don't get hooked!
ReplyDeleteI never meant to start a collection .............but then spot another piece.
DeleteAn autumn vase sounds good hope you take a picture of it filled with autumn flowers.
One is an ornament, two is a pair, three or more become a collection.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, definitely a collection of Holly and Ivy then.
DeleteAH, but it's a small collection . . . at the moment! These pieces don't turn up very often anyway.
ReplyDeleteI have had collections of all sorts down the years, but some are difficult to display/take up a lot of room and so the rolling pins, teapots and jelly moulds have all gone to new homes.
I've had owls, stamps, postcards, thimbles(why ?), eggcups - that was short lived. Now just books and the Holly and Ivy bits. I can still fit the Holly and Ivy in the cupboard so that's OK!
DeleteThe coasters were a bargain and so was a big cauli for £1. I've just paid £1.19 for a medium sized one.
ReplyDeleteI like that Portmeirion pattern, we were given a lovely piece as a present but I haven't found anymore yet in charity shops.
Penny
It all started way back in 2017 so it's taken 8 years to collect the 9 different things - a slow collection!
DeleteI love the Holly and Ivy ware and have picked up a few pieces at car boot sales. The best being a cake stand for £1. I was thrilled. I think of mine as a collection and have about 10 items, all found cheaply. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteMy first was the best bargain cake stand in 2017. As long as I still have room for them in the cupboard it's OK - they are crazy prices new and on ebay so I don't look there.
DeleteAs long as you enjoy them, don't get hung up on whether it's a collection or not. I love Portmeirion, the plates are nice and deep for a meal that has a goodly amount of sauce or gravy! If they increase in value they you can sell if you want to, but if they don't then at least you have enjoyed them {and got your monies worth!}
ReplyDeleteI'm not really bothered - as long as there is room in the cupboard and the pieces are cheap it's OK
DeleteIt's always fun to have some items to look for. That fun is probably what drives collections!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you are right
DeleteA perfect bargain - a feast for the eyes and a feast for the stomach!
ReplyDeleteThe following Saturday I found nothing - it's mainly rubbish and tat so I'm pleased when I spot something nice
DeleteYour 'not a collection' is now well and truly a collection, but a manageable one at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI too used to collect owls, that got out of hand and was nipped in the bud after a few years. I also used to collect egg cups, they were all displayed in a glass front kitchen wall cabinet and ironically when Alan's Mum came to stay and he was making her boiled eggs for her breakfast he couldn't find an egg cup ... typical man couldn't see what was right in front of his eyes. He very cleverly used the plastic ring from the light fitting, so she got her breakfast eggs and we all had a good laugh when I pointed out the egg cups right at eye level, when I got in from work.
My early owl collection was on top of a small wall-cupboard that fell off the wall! Didn't do the ceramic and candle owls much good! I nearly gave up then.
DeleteLast years comment from Debby was very apt 😀
ReplyDeleteI love Port Merieon and so did my dear old Mum, but OH thinks it's fussy!
That cauliflower was a bargain, a large cauli in Tesco is £2
Alison in Devon x
The cauli was the second £1 one I've had from the veg lady this year, a real good bargain.
DeleteThe Holly and Ivy is my favourite design, some of the others are too pink and flowery! I only have two bits that aren't Holly and Ivy
Nice finds at great prices. You can't go wrong.
ReplyDeleteYour holy/ivy collection is lovely.
I am surprised to hear Christmas decorations are now a feature at the sales. Everything is Halloween in MA.
Christmas is sneaking into the shops already - Halloween is a smaller affair here although there's plenty of stuff to buy everywhere
DeleteIt's good to treat yourself now and then and you are so good at finding the best prices. Why not?!
ReplyDeleteI was quite surprised at the asking price although wouldn't have wanted to pay much more anyway
DeleteIf you can find things you love at prices like that, by all means, treat yourself!
ReplyDeleteMost weeks I find nothing interesting at all!
DeleteThese are so pretty. I love Portmerion's designs.
ReplyDeleteThe Holly and Ivy is the only design I like enough to have more than one piece.
DeleteWow those really were quite the bargain! I probably would have bought a couple of cauliflowers at that price too lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm really not liking the darker mornings.
I have a few bits of Holly and Ivy and love them. They have pride of place on my Christmas table. I use Portmeirion Botanic Garden dinner plates on a daily basis too.
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely coasters and a real bargain at 50p each.
