Books For The Country Gardener

This is another page from the book that I had for Christmas - The Country Commonplace Book by Miranda Mills.

No idea of the criteria for the authors choices for these book lists but "The Potting Shed Murder" was rubbish! I only got a few pages in before giving up on it and it went back to the library straight away.

I've reserved the first on her list - Elizabeth and Her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim - from the library, it will be here next visit.  Morville Hours is one of those books that was everywhere when it was published but I've not read it or any of the others.

  1. I Loved both The Morville Hours and the Morville Year. I hope you do too. I preferred E von A's book 'the Enchanted April' to her garden book.

  2. I agree that Enchanted April is better than Elizabeth and her garden. Little Toller have some lovely garden themed books and I've recently read Beth Chattos Garden Notebook which I enjoyed.

  3. I haven't read Elizabeth and her German Garden, but I recently read The Benefactress by the same author. It was charming and I enjoyed it, but it is one of those books that seems rushed at the end, which left me feeling a bit cheated.

  4. The Morville Hours is one of my favourites - lots to take in and beautifully written. Elizabeth and her German Garden is a good read, but Enchanted April as mentioned by the other commenters is lovely (as is the adaptation by the BBC with Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, etc.). My Mum loved Old Herbaceous, but I haven't read that one yet, although it is on my Kindle.
    Best wishes

  5. Enchanted April is one of my favourite, rainy winter afternoon watches. I've not read the book, but I have read the German Garden, which, I think, needs to be read with a little political awareness of the times.

  6. I was underwhelmed by German Garden, but Enchanted April was much more appealing.

  8. I'll look for a few of these books. Enchanted April seems especially well-liked.
Lately I am reading about Japanese gardening as I like their use of shrubs and the patterns of planting.

  9. I'm reading about Wellington and Napoleon - couldn't be more different to your reading.

  10. It must have been pretty bad if you couldn't last more than a few pages!

  11. Thank you to everyone for comments. Compared to many of you I feel I'm very under read! (if there is such a thing!)

  12. Compared to most people now I am under read as well. I read more as a youngster and teenager than I do now.

    God bless.

  13. I remember really enjoying "...Her German Garden" years ago - I think it was on the shelf in a rental vacation cottage somewhere? So hope you like it!
