As usual I went over to Campsea Ash Auction Yard to have a look at their second-of-the-year Domestic and Rural Bygones sale of various bits of rusty junk and odd things that people have entered to be sold.
I took the 5 year old granddaughter with me and she wasn't very impressed at looking at a lot of old things! We didn't stay long!
A few photos of the Lots that I found interesting and this first one must be the oddest and slightly creepy Taxidermy fox - wearing clothes........... Why?
The first folding beach chairs that were made for children? We had some like this - I was about 5 years old.
Spice drawers - I liked the labels better than the drawers but not enough to leave a bid.
There were a few collections of treen entered in the sale this time
These below were described as the signs from Country House Servants call bells.
2 Victorian Samplers - too much reflection for a good photo
A painted milk churn - these were all the rage a few years ago.
Not sure what anyone would do with a large collection of pomanders

Someone must have collected old lawn mowers - perhaps their wife told them they had to go!
Chelsea Pensioners coat or cloak. When they appear in public at the Chelsea Flower Show or other TV things I always think they look very hot to wear
There were some other taxidermy birds which Granddaughter found very curious and difficult to explain when she asked if they were real or alive and I said - They were once!

That fox is definitely creepy - I find taxidermy in general a bit creepy.

DeleteI'd happily sew a jacket for a doll or a teddy bear - but I could never do it for a dead animal! Creepy in the extreme imho. I LOVE the posts you do each year from the Rural Bygones Sale, always delightful. But what sort of person would buy a pomander collection? I hope the samplers fetched a good price

DeletePomanders definitely a failed collection idea! I had a few rolling pins once -equally difficult to display, and the Shelley et al jelly moulds took up so much room. I am guessing the fox may have advertised bespoke country clothing? Oddball indeed. The treen was lovely though, and the samplers though the one on the right past its best, sadly. Thanks for sharing - I always find it an interesting auction, and how I miss going to auctions these days.

DeleteI didn't think the fox was creepy as so many have said, but I was disgusted by the lack of respect in making the fox look ridiculous, as I do with any animal wearing clothes. I always think military uniforms are itchy as well as being hot to wear and they can't wait to get them off. The only thing I may have left a bid on is the milk churn.

DeleteAnother weird auction, great fun. I hope the taxidermy doesn't give the five year old nightmares! That collection of rollers looks like a countywide municipal decluttering, to get room in their sheds. The treen, now, that's nice.

DeleteI thought about possible nightmares with the taxidermy later - hopefully by the time we'd been swimming and done lots of colouring she'd forgotten all about it! I won't ask!
I had to look up the word treen. Never heard it before and now I know what you were referring to. So there were no toys for granddaughter to be interested in.

I guess the pomanders were put in amongst clothes - definitely too many there - not a useful collection at all - dust collectors!
DeleteSomebody must have had a collection of taxidermy. That Fox, in full dress, is something else. The only place I see taxidermy is at the Kittery (Maine) Trading Post where they have a full size bear, wolf and other animals on display. I love the treen. The patina on old wood pieces is lovely.

DeleteAlways remember the time when a couple of Chelsea pensioners came to an 'event' at our RAF station (around 60 yrs ago) and BOTH of them pinched our WRAF young womens bottoms. As to the uniform, I regret it looks a bit like the outfit that Queen Camilla was wearing on the King's Birthday parade. Lesley
