A birthday present from the family was this photo storage box that I'd put on my wish list. I have 8 photo albums and lots of loose photos, the albums are falling to pieces or those old type with sticky pages that have turned the photos a strange colour.
The box is supposedly fireproof and water proof and has room to store more than 1,000 photos in separate plastic boxes, which can be labelled and sorted into years or subjects.
My wedding album and my late mum's two photo albums I'll keep as they are.
I started emptying an album full of old Scouting photos that I would show the new Cubs to give them an idea of what we did. Shared those below on the local Facebook page but only heard from one former Cub Scout.
My Cub Scout football team - we took part in the District Football Tournament each year and won it once.
I used to 'train' them - using the same way that we practised Hockey at School many years earlier. I think this is about 1978 or 79.
The tournament had to stop a few years later when some parents took everything far too seriously and started bullying the boys and the refs and leaders. What a sad situation.

A few years earlier this is the Scouts at Cromer in Norfolk - Colin is the one in the shades on the right. I think it's the second year I took half a dozen older Cubs for a couple of nights to Scout Camp in 1979 - the summer before we got married.
I can see this photo sorting is going to take me several weeks!

DeleteSorting photographs becomes a journey of memories - not something that can be done rapidly.

DeleteSorting photos is always a job that takes ten times longer than you think it will. The old sort of albums with the tacky pages were not good for photos were they. Mine are either discoloured or in reasonable condition but falling out. The older sort where you used sticky corners to hold the photos in were better, it was just the corners that eventually fell off leaving all the photos ready to fall out when you pick up the book. Your storage boxes sound like a good idea.

ReplyDeleteMy Mum (88) is steadily sorting through her albums, actually taking out pictures and sending them to the people in the picture or their descendants. She has worked in a children's home (even being Director in the end) and a women's shelter; so many of the subjects of the pictures don't have any pictures of that time themselves.

DeleteI think it's time I went back to my stash of old photos and decided who to entrust the family ones to. Probably youngest son who has Dad's Police medals would be the 'chosen one'. Middle son lives in Turkey and I don't fancy the photos going there as he has no intention of living in the UK again. Eldest son not in the best of health . . . Decisions, decisions.

DeleteTime consuming but enjoyable, I need to do some of this and decide which are keepers and which need to go, I'm not great at being decisive when it comes to things I'm keeping for sentimental reasons!

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post. How lovely to look at the photos and the nice memories you have of your years that you volunteered with Cubs. It’s good to look back. I think sometimes we don’t give ourselves enough credit for the things we did in past years that impacted other people’s lives. Sorting photos is on my to do list also. DeleteOrganizing your photos will be a good project and best of all will preserve your treasured photos. The photos show that you and Colin were devoted to Scouting. I've always had high regard for Scouting. A neighbor is an Eagle Scout and his son is also. Lovely people.

DeletePhoto sorting is a huge project, Sue! I'm lucky that my sister has become our family photo historian and so it's her job to organize it all.
ReplyDeleteI was a scout leader for a few years, also. I stopped when my son got more interested in sports.
So many youth groups are so short of leaders and many closing - it's very sad.

ReplyDeleteI did something similar during lockdown and binned 3000 photos that were no longer of interest. I like your storage system as my photos are in cardboard boxes which is probably not a great idea! Catriona
