The usual income of State Pension, Suffolk County Council Spouses Pension and interest on savings.
I'd hoped for a fairly low spend in June with only three known extras. The garden waste bin was up £2 on last year to £66 for the year - they empty every fortnight all year round. The car tax which suddenly appeared last year (previously the age and engine size of my car meant I didn't pay any) stayed at £20.The dentist was for a check up and x-ray and was £84 - he said a nine month rather than a six month check up would do, which is good. The regular expenses were Council tax, charity donations, phones and broadband, one lot of diesel for the car and monthly electric bill. That lot came to around £550.
Food spending for home -already mentioned- plus things for doing pickles totalled £106.93. There was also one meal out with YD and EGD, a KFC after the dentist and just the one whippy 99 ice-cream (sadly!)
Personal spending wasn't too bad (no books!), there was the annoying £5 wasted on the card making kit, a hair cut and 2 new Puzzler books - I ordered a 16 x 16 Sudoku puzzle book online as there is only one of these puzzles in the Take-A Break Puzzler and I always turn to that page first. It takes me days to sort a 16 x16 so I think the new book will last me months!
Incidental spending was mainly small stuff including screen-wash for the car, sunflower hearts for the birds, a new plastic stool for the hallway (£4.99), bits for bathroom and kitchen- including useful car-boot finds - and the window cleaner came round (£10.00). While Amazon had their Prime Special Offer Days I bought Ecover Laundry Liquid and a different sort of Dishwasher Tabs. I'd almost come to the end of my last Smol orders - now cancelled due to their new delivery costs.
Small Savings..............
- Didn't go out much in the heat
- Bread loaves from bread machine as usual 50/50 Wholemeal/white flour
- Washing machine used only twice a week
- Washing dried outside
- Raspberries from the garden ( had to stop eating them - they were upsetting my stomach so they're in the freezer for adding to the fruit peel to make 'Compost' Jelly sometime)
- First cucumbers from the garden
- First courgettes "" "" ""
- Dishwasher only used every other day.
- Taking advantage of the Amazon Prime-Days savings for a couple of things.
- Reading library books and from my shelves for free. I read 13 books in June - due to the heat!
- Useful kitchen bits..... scourers etc found at boot sales.
- New sunglasses from car-boot sale for 50p! (Still with their Asda George £5 label)
Next month...............
July in 2025 was the month with the lowest spend, can I do even better this year? The only known extra is for Virus protection for the laptop - there are no birthdays or other big bills due and fingers crossed I won't need to spend much at all.............especially if we get more very hot weather that keeps me indoors rather than out on adventures.
********************
An awful start to Wimbledon for British Players and Jack Draper had to pull out as he'd had a return of injury. Then there was the Cricket third test against NZ - another loss. Plus the brilliant Ben Stokes deciding to retire from International cricket.....with test matches against Pakistan still to come. Maybe the English Footballers will do better?
Not much of a Summer of Sport to write about this year!
Back Tomorrow

My fuel is up this month due to Malvern, Patchwork class, trip to Auction, trip to Tam's and this week I will need to top up again as 70 miles each way to stock up new Unit. Savings on food though. However, had to buy oils for chair and future furniture fettling, fabrics for D&E's quilt and batting for the auction quilt I mended.
ReplyDeleteI will pretend I didn't pre-order the latest Barbara Erskine book in hardback . . .Hey ho . . .
70 miles each way for your new unit is going to be a trial! Hopefully it will be worthwhile. Will you have to go to help as well as re-stock etc?
DeleteI hope July turns out to be another low-spending month for you. By the way, congratulations on the fresh produce from your garden! It must be so satisfying to harvest your own food.
ReplyDeleteYears ago on our smallholding we were self-sufficient in fruit and veg. Now just a few things in my small garden
DeleteSue you are so methodical in your accounting I am totally impressed. Not having a car for me is a blessing but obviously you need one out in the country.
ReplyDeleteI used to get money out of the bank after Colin was paid and divide into lots of tins - it was a good way to manage. Now I just like to see what I've spent on different things and see when they go up
DeleteI am lucky enough to have a Debenture seat at Wimbledon , and was there till late last night and will leave around 9 to head back - but it’s increasing an expensive day and I have noticed the quality of the food stalls is poor - I am able to use selected restaurants where the food is good , but I am there to watch tennis , not eat
ReplyDeleteI do not know how you manage all that you do . My council
tax bill alone is more per month than your entire monthly outgoings- I am able to terrible cook and live alone so buy a great deal from M and S. Expensive but easy . I have mobility issues now as I age , so finding the Tube and busses harder so use Uber a lot . I drive and have a Blue Badge but struggle to find somewhere to park , and the parking signs are so confusing I never know whether I am allowed to park or not
Dreadful day for
British tennis as you say - and at one point I thought Sinner was going out too ( I was watching his match ). Tennis is a competitive business now - chasing the sun and the players bodies take a pounding . Very sorry to hear that Chris Every is having cancer treatment again - I adored watching her play in the 70s
I have just started blog reading and have enjoyed reading yours
Miriam
Welcome to the wonderful world of Blogs!!
DeleteHow lovely to have a regular seat at Wimbledon - although I'm not sure about sitting there in the heat we have had! Hope you have plenty of water on hand.
Council tax is certainly less here in the country compared to towns and cities - I get a 25% discount for being alone and as it's just a small bungalow it's D rated.
I like to batch cook and have things in the freezer for easy meals. Took a while to get used to cooking for 2 after the children moved out and another long time to get used to 1 after my husband died.
Would you give me the website address to order that 16 x 16 Sudoku puzzle book please? That would keep us occupied for sure. Thanks in advance, Alice
ReplyDeleteIt was just off Amazon - there are all sorts on there.
DeleteYou have so much self-control! Very impressive. Even so you do get the most out of any entertainment that comes your way, without needing to spend a fortune - that's something a lot of people never learn how to do. ๐
ReplyDeleteIt's a surprise to have a month with no books bought!
DeleteLots of athletics to come!
ReplyDeleteIs there something other than the regular Diamond League? I shall investigate.
DeleteCommonwealth Games and European Championships.
DeleteNot sure the Men’s English Football team is going to get far in the World Cup, would be nice if I had to eat my words ๐
ReplyDeleteAs always, I admire your savings and day to day frugality, it’s the thing about looking after the pennies isn’t it……
Alison in Devon x
It was so disappointing to hear about Jack Draper being out of Wimbledon. I'm not a huge football fan - it's too tame! - I prefer Rugby but I'd love them to do well. I keep going to bed before matches have finished so never know what's happened til morning.
DeleteYou're adept at keeping your expenses low, the heat was helpful wasn't it, we stayed home more than usual although it was a struggle to keep up with picking ripe things from the garden. Early starts and late evening picking were all we could face.
ReplyDeleteWell done on a frugal month, I will be interested to see if you can beat it in July.

Limited income means keeping a good check on expenses - and I'm being careful in case I decide to move!
DeleteIt was much too hot to do any shopping except for quick trip for food!
No books bought .... is this even you Sue, or has someone hijacked your page!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's the keeping tabs on expenditure that really pays off isn't it. Well I thought it was, but we are quickly running out of funds for the bungalow. By hook or by crook we will manage somehow. Did you get the Wordle word the other day when it was 'emcee' ... I didn't . I didn't even realise that MC could be written that way!
I cheated with emcee! had some letters, guessed their order and looked it up on dictionary website!
DeleteIt's odd about the books - but car boot sales have been so repetitive that it's the same old stuff every week so I don't even bother to look and it's been too hot to tour charity shops. Hope my library books get sent to Stowmarket soon. The mobile was cancelled last week due to heat and my reservations should be on their way for me to go and pick up.
You manage extremely well and likely better than most (definitely better than me).
ReplyDeleteHopefully the library book delivery was just a one-off situation, and everything will return to the norm.
While you have cool weather, the heat has arrived in Massachusetts. 90+ degrees F is predicted. I was outside at 6 AM for an early walk and to water the gardens. It was cool and dewy. By 10 AM it was 80 degrees F. My AC will run around the clock.
I'll have to give the library a phone call and see if the books have got there from the mobile - hopefully they have.
DeleteWe are due to get hot again for the weekend - unusual for us to have two hot spells so close together
I'm paying more for petrol as changed my car and its now petrol rather than diesel, and it seems to drink more too. Your window cleaner is cheaper than mine too, I pay £20 a month for a small 3 bed semi. I'm very lucky that OH sees to the bills, but my money seems to go on granddaughter and foster baby (can't leave him out), plants and books. Take care. Xx
ReplyDeleteI guess bungalows are less? I've been paying him £10 for the last 5 years and asked him if that was still OK - and it is. He comes round every 6 weeks but less in winter and only does the outsides
DeleteMy youngest son is in Manchester this week and said he will watch a soccer game there. I said, "no, it's football!" :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you put him right!
DeleteWith another heatwave predicted, you might very well beat your July record. ๐
ReplyDeleteI hope it's a low spend month - I won't go far if it's hot again.
DeleteLoving watching the tennis after work, been some very good matches. Keeping track of your finances really helps keep the cells working which can only be a good thing!
