First Week of June

I went to the dentist during the week (check up and Xray only - thankfully). I go to Ipswich as that's where they moved to during covid. While I was on the right edge of town I decided to pop along to Dreams and see about a new mattress, something I keep putting off as it's such a faff.
I drive into the carpark and all the lights were off in all the big warehouse stores but the doors were open and it turned out they'd all been flooded out on Tuesday with huge downpours and hailstones - Dreams and Bensons for Beds are both there - both shut. Back in my village on Tuesday we didn't even have enough rain to fill the water butts. Now I'll have to go back specially sometime - no doubt I'll put it off a bit longer.

The first handful of raspberries were ready this week - the seeds in them seem a bit hard again - like last year - lack of rain I think. .

From the few old strawberry plants in two tubs I've had about a dozen strawberries and they've quickly finished and I'll empty the tubs now and start again next year.

Disappointed to see that the Commonwealth Games won't be on free TV in the summer - only available on a pay to view channel. Channel 5 will have a highlights catch up in the evening. They weren't even supposed to be in Scotland anyway but Australia backed out. So with a reduced games and no free exposure to the public it could be the end for them.
BUT Queens Club tennis - the start of the grass court season and the build up to Wimbledon - is still on BBC and starts next week , with Nottingham on BBC iplayer the week after and Eastbourne the following week and the first of six Cricket Test Matches for England's men has also started and there's still an hour of highlights each evening on the Beeb. But if England and NZ were both as hopeless at batting but as brilliant at bowling as they were on day one then there won't be many 5 day tests - It was almost a one day thing!

On Thursday there was a thunderstorm - it rained a bit! I tried again with the camera and you-tube. I'm sure the way I get it loaded to the blog is probably the long/wrong way.

Have a good weekend - a very wet Saturday is forecast here - I'll be back Monday

  1. That is very disappointing about the Commonwealth Games - and annoying too. xx

  2. I think the costs of these big sporting events is becoming too much for cities and countries. It's a good thing we didn't win Eurovision, what a huge undertaking that has become!

    1. That's true. The BBC are always short of money - they pay some presenters too much!

  3. Dentist and hygienist for me too yesterday. Glasgow didn’t want the Games either and it’s a pared down version that’s coming anyway. It caused such disruption the last time as shopkeepers near all the venues lost business due to all the restrictions in place. Tennis will be my thing to watch soon but just on BBC. Catriona

    1. I didn't read all the info to see what's being missed out - disappointing for those athletes

  4. We had rain something like that too.
I'll watch a bit of tennis... as Catriona says, the big events have become Too Big; but how does one begin to go back to a simpler, more reasonable presentation?

    1. I doubt there's any going back - everything has to be bigger and 'better'

  5. I didn't even know that the Commonwealth Games were taking place this Summer, let alone that they are back in the UK again. I am not a sports fan, by any means, but I think it is sad that they are not available to watch on free to view tv in the place that is hosting them.

    1. There's been very few mentions of the Games - presumably because a lot of the population won't be able to watch

  6. Very disappointing re: Commonwealth Games. How are children of those who cannot afford to pay to view supposed to be inspired if they can't see it? At least we have tennis to look forward to, and the World Cup sometimes.
    Wet here too!

    1. The weather lady on the radio said in the East we have had more rain in the first week of June than in the whole of spring

  7. That's good you didn't have anything major to be done at the dentist, same here just a check up and x-ray for me. The dentist said I didn't need a separate hygienist appointment as all looked ok just a quick polish with that gritty toothpaste. My Husband had the same result so all good. It is a pity about the lack of sport on free tv. We watch a lot of rugby union and league and have had quite a lot to watch lately with both men's and women's games on free tv and I am so pleased about the tennis to come. Neither of us are much interested in soccer but might watch some of the World Cup, pleased to see Scotland qualified. Pity about your raspberries I guess it is a lack of rain in the early growth stages, if the pips are too hard I get dreadful indigestion but I love the flavour of raspberries. Regards Sue H

    1. I can't go to the Hygienist - it's too traumatic! Too much spraying water.
The dentist has changed me to 9 months instead of 6 which is good.
Very much looking forward to tennis

  8. Glad the dentist was all OK, I’m at the hygienist next week. I can’t believe the weather. Having baked over bank holiday/half term whilst visiting Suffolk/Norfolk now I’m back in the southwest we have had wind and rain every day this week! Will be watching the tennis.

  9. Dentist for me too this week. Looking forward to watching some tennis, I'm glad it is still on BBC, I wonder though for how much longer?:)

    1. How odd that so many others have just been to dentist too.
I'm not sure what will happen after 2027 when BBC will bid for Wimbledon again.

  10. Don’t mention dentists to me 😳 poor dental hygiene as a youngster is now coming home to roost in my mouth!
Weather is awful here today, I know we needed rain for the garden but it feels like winter again.
What a moaning Minnie I am , thank goodness for my favourite blogs to read.

    1. I have so many old fillings from the 1970s and 80's, but they seem to be OK thankfully. My Mum and Gran both feared the dentist so much they didn't go at all! - They both had very few teeth at the end of their lives

  11. It's disappointing when "they" move events to paid TV. We now just watch F1 racing highlights on YouTube since we aren't paying to watch. So far we like doing that.
The grass and plants were happy with that nice downpour.

    1. I think sometime in the future we will have to pay for everything and the BBC won't survive as it is. Sad thought

  12. That's quite a vigorous downpour! I wonder if that's the same storm that soaked me on top of the tour bus in London. And the Tuesday rain that flooded Dreams is probably the same one that pelted me with hail at Stonehenge!

    1. Your family certainly saw a lot of rain when they were visiting!

  13. Your video shows wind swept pelting rain. The ground must be saturated which the plants love.
My ground is bone dry with no rain in sight.
i am finding fewer and fewer free programs on TV. The free programs interrupt with lots of ads.

    1. The rain really came down in torrents for a few minutes.

We still have the BBC without ads but of course we have to pay nearly £200 a year for our TV licence - I think things will change here

  14. Raspberries are my favourite. We are under a tornado watch right now and I am not sure how long it will last.

    God bless.

    1. Hope you avoid being hit by a tornado - that's one thing we don't have to worry about here!

  15. Oh how I do love a good thunderstorm. Thank you for that video. We were supposed to get a tremendous thunderstorm this afternoon. It did not happen. I heard a few rumbles of thunder. The breezes made it much nicer to weedwhack/strim.

  16. We had heavy rain last week, but not quite as torrential as this. We used to get dreadful run-off on the lanes around our old house, as the fields were substantially higher, and the lanes would turn into rivers, complete with chunks of stone.

No raspberries here yet - still just at the flowering stage.

I had to wait until the free iPlayer version of Badminton Horse Trials as not going to pay £21 or so to watch it whilst it's happening. There's Horse & COuntry channel tv, but no, not for me. Viewing plans "start" at £14.99 a month!!

    1. These raspberries are a mystery as they are always earlier than my main bed.
Luckily there were no floods in the village after the downpour on Thursday, the farmers were pleased as it had been so dry.
I don't know what I'll do if we lose all sport off free TV as I do love watching so many.

  17. My sister sent me a photo of the floods in Ipswich. She said it was quite bad and a little scary as she was driving home when the heavy rains came!
It is sad that the sports aren't shown 'free' anymore. It's all about the money I suppose!
