The (Very Late) May Library Book Photo

Another post that has been sat in Drafts for  weeks and now its only a week until the library van will be round with my June books!

Collected from the library van 3 weeks ago were lots of crime, four are reprints by forgotten authors.

I find crime are my easy-to-read choice when I can't concentrate on non-fiction.

I've read 4 of the crime so far and flicked through Simplicite.
'Money in the Morgue' is interesting as it's a book started by Ngaio Marsh before she died in 1982 and finished by Stella Duffy just recently........ You can't see the join.

I must have a look at Islander as the author is at Felixstowe Book Festival next month and I need to decide if I should go and listen to him talking about it or not.

More things were sorted yesterday..... first with the chaplain, then at the bank and at the florist. More forms filled in and posted.

Had a letter from electric supply company telling me my meter is old and they "need to replace it with  a smart meter". But as I would have to pay for the phone call to either arrange an appointment or to say I don't want one I shall ignore the letter until they contact me.......why should I pay (even if it only pennies for a phone call) when it's something They want to do!

And Her Maj's Revenue and Customs are on the ball, they soon sent a letter wanting to work out if enough tax was paid before Col passed away or maybe too much? Hopefully the latter.

Back Soon

  1. We arranged our smart meter fitting online to save doing it by phone! Check their web site to see if you can do it that way. It was simple and quick.

  2. There is no legal requirement to have a smart meter. You can ignore forever if you want to.

    1. Like another comment lower down here, I read my meter weekly and record readings in an exercise book. I know how much individual uses of electrical equipment cost me without the need for a smart meter, fluctuations in what I use accordingly to time of year, and have been doing it for years.

    2. I am even known to read the meter before and after a shower as my shower is electric and calculate how much the shower cost! They talk about Smart Meters as if none of us have ever been aware of the cost of electricity before.

  3. I’m with Rachel about the smartmeter. We get cheeky phone calls as well as letters, and I ask them to refer me to the appropriate piece of legislation. Usually confuses the caller as that’s not on their script. I’m reading Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans for my Readers’ Group, but I’m not really enjoying it. It’s anout a WW2 evacuee. Catriona

  4. I've had similar letters here and even an email. The phone number is a free dial but when I call it is "leave a message and we'll call you back" Like you I say if they want to do it they need to talk to me:-) Best wishes to you.

  5. We have a smart meter and whilst we have not changed our usage, it's good to see where we are spending, BUT we have learn't nothing new as we had already worked out what was expensive to use. As for the tax office, it's just work to them, fingers crossed for a refund for you.

  6. As has been said there is no legal requirement for a smart meter. I feel I don't need one as one of the very few useful things I learned at grammar school was how to read a meter. I read my meter every week to keep the beast under control

  7. A smart meter is of no use to me because you need a smart phone to use its smart facilities!
I only have a "granny phone"!

    1. Me too, Mary, a smart meter would be no use at all to me.

  8. I agree with you about ignoring the letter re smart meter. I once worked with a chap who would always ignore any requests from admin or management, his approach was they will soon contact again if it is essential, most of the time you never hear from them again! It works!

  9. I won't have a smart meter. I feel there must be some sort of benefit to the supplier and the meters are to help them. I think they will use the information they gain as a way of increasing your tariff. So, if you use more in the morning, they will charge you a more expensive tariff and then if you switch to evening usage they will increase that tariff too. Companies never give you something for nothing unless it benefits them. HMRC are always on the ball after someone has passed away! I think you're doing brilliantly so keep strong!

  10. I really don't understand the benefit to the consumer of a smart meter. It hasn't made any difference to our consumption and occasionally they still come and read the meter although I was told when it was installed - and we didn't request it, they just did it although I suppose we could've refused it - that the readings would be sent from the meter straight through to the office, etc, etc.
I've just had a very nice email, Sue, thanking me for my donation to Lymphoma Action in Col's memory. How very nice for my donation to be acknowledged.
Very good wishes from a damp and dull Devon today,

  11. Nice lot of books. I love seeing what you've picked out and are reading this week. Sounds like there is still a lot of organising and sorting out to do. The tax man can be really quick if they think you owe them something! I hope it's the other way round.

  12. I haven’t got a smart meter either. The tax office were surprisingly efficient when my son died. They sent all the relevant information quickly. Just another thing to tick off the list. We got a rebate the following year though that we weren’t expecting. We spent it on a family get together.

  13. I thought of you and your love of books today when I was in a well known second hand bookshop in Alnwick.
We spent about an hour and a half in there though I only bought 2 books. I had a wonderful time and picked up lots before putting them back because i couldn't justify buying them. An exquisite form of torture.
I hope your next haul of library books is a good one. Sue
