Mapping The Garden

About a hundred years ago someone asked if I could draw a plan of the garden, and finally due to the shortage of ideas for posts, I got around to drawing one.

This view from above taken by son-in-laws drone camera has helped with the drawing

The track is on the left edge which people can walk along as it is a footpath, the path goes through my new gates onto the meadow. The footpath is the dotty line- - - - - - -. When I said we had a footpath through our property a lot of people said they couldn't live with that but it doesn't really affect the house. No different to living in a street with a pavement going by. Until Lockdown and "forced" exercise the footpath was hardly used but since then I've seen lots of people walking by as part of a circular path from the village proper.

The green blobs are trees or shrubs . The trees behind the garage are the older fruit trees, apples, pears and a plum. 4 vegetable beds along the bottom of the picture with the top-fruit bed at the end, that has 4 gooseberry bushes, 1 blackcurrant and some older raspberry canes. Also the asparagus along the edge .
The square strawberry and raspberry beds are the new ones we did in a hurry before Colin died. They are not so good, the soil there is poor. The patio has lots of pots including hostas, an acer, the olive trees and blueberry bushes and I'll put the squash plants in big pots there too. The  Fig tree is in the ground at the edge of the patio.
My new gates make everywhere a bit more private. Before they were there vans and cars could drive straight in, around the Turkey oak and out again

Next doors house is bottom right, you can see a bit of their garden is a behind mine. Apart from the bit that goes behind my garden, their garden is all at the front of their house. They have a hot tub in the corner at the back - weird for Suffolk!

There are fields to the right,  at the far end and to the left, which is how I'm at the end of the lane. Nowhere else to go when you get to my house - unless you are on foot.

Back Tomorrow
Sue

  1. That's fascinating. I've often tried to mapped your plot from the pictures you have tried to post but obviously not terribly successfully.
I can see why you need that mower!!!

    1. It's an odd shape - yes I'm glad to get my ride on mower back. I keep the footpath mown and the bit by the workshop and all the garden in front and at the back. I wouldn't want to do the whole meadow, so most is cow parsley and wild weeds!

  2. How fun for you to do this! I love aerial views of the land. Good to see you have plenty of space between you and next door too, at this precarious time.

    1. It was much easier to do with the drone photo to work from as it's a bit of an odd shape.
It will be quieter from next door when they finish having work done - it's a patio at the moment with builders loud radio!

  3. Your garden looks so big but lovely and interesting.
We are so lucky to have a garden, several of my friends have gone into retirement homes and have no garden now and say they are sorry, I knew when I moved here I had to have a little garden, my garden was very big from the old house I had. I like my own company and this little garden is just right. Hazel c uk 🌈🌈🌈

    1. Everything adds up to one acre, thank goodness I don't have to do much on the meadow, except mow the footpath and around the new trees.

  4. Oh thats awesome! I used to try and work out what was where when you had the aerial shot as your header pic but now it all makes a lot more sense! Do you know if the land was once just one parcel? Looks like you have the best bit ;)

    1. The meadow bit was once a piece of land belonging to a church charity and was bought by the previous owners of my house sometime in the 80's I think.
Next door neighbours was once a semi detached cottage and its possible that the way in to the half nearest my house was round the back of my house. But as everything goes back to 1700's no one really knows how it was back then.

    1. It had all we had at the smallholding but in a much more manageable size - I'm glad we found it and settled in before Col died

  6. It's nice to see the overall layout. Drones are good for layout mapping aren't they ... and I have to say your illustration of your garden is much neater than one I once did of ours. I must try and be more artistic!!

    1. My map is still not quite right, the meadow is narrower at the end than my drawing, and I forgot to put the downstairs bathroom/porch extension on the house drawing. Oh well.

    1. It's the dotty line down my meadow, probably not very clear, sorry

  8. I'm hopeless at visualising anything so the drone picture is really helpful when you're describing where everything is. Are the fields part of a farm and if so do they grow anything in there? xx

    1. Yes all arable all round here. Mainly wheat this year closest to the house and oil seed rape a bit further away - as in my header photo

  9. I love seeing drone photos like that and your map drawing is wonderful! It really does help to picture and understand everything around your house when you talk about it. Thank you!

  10. It looks quite a large plot, but a beautiful place to be in the countryside.

  11. Your map is wonderful. I'm a geographer by profession, and I greatly appreciate hand drawn maps. They are art. Your home is lovely, too. -Celie
