These are my books reserved and collected from the mobile library van last week - A Great Ol' Heap!
I've no idea where I got the details from for several of these and only know a couple of the authors. There are a lot of non-fiction this time and not so many crime....quite worrying !
The crime/thrillers on the left are The Crime of Black Dudley by Margery Allingham which is the very first Albert Campion story and The Lady Vanishes by Ethel Lina White which has just been reprinted in the British Library Crime Classic series - I thought they were concentrating on books long forgotten but The Lady Vanishes is easily available elsewhere and the library copy is a reprint from 2017.
Bottom of the pile is The Year of Miracles which is a cookery book and a story of grief and I've already abandoned it. No idea about Louise Doughty - A Bird in Winter. Many Deadly Returns are 21 short crime stories.
October, October by Katya Balen is a children's book which popped up somewhere because the illustrations are by Angela Harding, although the story sounds intriguing.
The Words I never Wrote by Jane Thynne is a historical novel set in two time periods and places. I've already nearly finished it - a really good story.
No idea about Hermit and The Wilderness Cure but I have a feeling that The House on The Irish Hillside might have been read before but with a different title, haven't got round to investigating yet.
Highland Fling by Sara Sheridan is one of a series that I've read before so I know I'll enjoy that.
On the right Belonging by Amanda Thomson - is another one I have no idea about. The House By the Thames is a story of people who lived in one of the oldest remaining houses near the river.
Country Remedies is an old book of East Anglian Plant Remedies and the social conditions that made them important.
And finally Nightshade is another crime book by an author I've not read before and seems to be the 5th in a series - so why didn't I request the first?
I'll let you know how I get on.

DeleteI must look for Many Deadly Returns at the library. Crime short stories are excellent. The murder squad are authors based in the north of England, and I’m currently reading Martin Edwards’ Seeker series. A bit slow burning but enjoyed the first two very much. J’nan
ReplyDeleteI've never been able to get into Martin Edwards books for some reason although when I heard him speak at a literary festival I didn't like him much!
DeleteI’m getting mixed up with different authors! Age does not come by itself! The Seeker series is by Shona Maclean, not Martin Edwards, but I’ve enjoyed his Harry Devlin books and the Lake District ones

DeleteNot sure if you read Louise Penny. There is some language...I do not like that. But her mysteries are not to be outdone. She and Hillary Clinton wrote a mystery together...a good one. I discovered her a few years ago, and I love her books. Enjoy...

You really do have to be in the right mood for The Year of Miracles don't you, I didn't finish it so it's somewhere on my bookshelf with a page turned over. I also have October, October like you I saw a recommendation somewhere and it sounded really intriguing, and I just had to have it when I saw the cover.

That is a good mix of books and fewer crime novels this time. With winter on the way, there will be more time for books and magazines.

DeleteLooks like you've got some interesting reading there Sue.. isn't it lovely that we can reserve books and have what we like. I reserve them here too in Wales and could have them delivered if I wanted but I still like my Saturday morning visits.
ReplyDeleteI like the mobile because I can have books for 8 weeks without them being overdue and they keep them for me for picking up once a month rather than having to go in and collect from a library more often

ReplyDeleteI love to read, but quite honestly, it's something I do a lot more of during the winter. I did devour a book in two days, and am in the depths of the second by the same author.
On the Suffolk libraries website we can reserve books and choose where to collect from. The mobile library goes round villages once every 4 weeks and has a van full of books for people to choose from and has the books people have asked to be reserved . So they are not really delivered to me but just on the library van for me to collect and the van stops a couple of 100 yards up the road from my house for 15 minutes every 4 weeks so I just have to turn up at the right time and get them stamped out.

ReplyDeleteLots of interesting characters and I enjoy the dialogue and the plots.
Since Covid I've been finding it hard to immerse myself in fiction like I used to; maybe the real world is too like a work of fiction at the moment!
I've tried Val McDermid and didn't get on well with them.

What a nice lot of books! I have been doing a lot of reading. I need to catch up writing down the ones I've read though. There was lots of down time when I was visiting sister, lots of early morning and late night reading.
