Brought these home from the library van on Thursday. All books I'd reserved on line.
All crime except for Windswept by Annie Worsley which is subtitled 'Life Nature and Deep Time in the Scottish Highlands'. The crime fiction are by modern writers Louisa Scarr, Judi Daykin, Mike Hollow, Mike Ripley and Ann Cleeves as well as two collections of crime short stories. Plus a 'lost' crime fiction reprint from BLCC by Elizabeth Anthony.
In November I collected these below. I didn't read Bothy, which I thought was about living somewhere remote but it actually was about Bothies - Duh! Litter of Bones was gruesome and I still have the Persephone book on the right (Waters under the earth). Swoop, Sing Perch has many of the same illustrations in it as the book I own by the same author and illustrator (A Sparrow's Life as Sweet as Ours). Other details of those I did finish are on the Books Read 2024 page.
and these two winter books. I loved 'The Woods in Winter' but haven't started 'Winter in the Air' yet.
I had to duck into a rabbit hole to see how strange Stella Gibbons actually was!
ReplyDeleteIt was Sylvia Townsend Warner who had an unusual life!
DeleteI've never read anything by STW, but agree with you about Mastermind!
ReplyDeleteI;ve read a couple of her books but didn't know any of the answers to the Mastermind questions
DeleteHow disappointing when a book turns out to be something unexpected and of little or no interest. Is it just my thinking or are the covers of books illustrated in a nostalgic way these days?
ReplyDeleteI probably didn't read the blurb about Bothy - my fault
DeleteJust finished The Woods in Winter. Loved it. The new 'Vera' story will be on TV in the next few weeks.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Woods in Winter - may have to own a copy!
DeleteIf that book is the new Vera TV programme I might not read it - I'll see.
Great selection to keep you reading in this miserable weather. Catriona
ReplyDeletePlenty of good crime is especially cheering!
DeleteThat's quite a good collection of 'dark' books for December. It's the time of year for murder and mystery. Enjoy. xx
ReplyDeleteAnytime is good for murder and mystery here!
DeleteIt's good weather for reading here. Too cold to be out and about! ;)
ReplyDeleteWe still haven't had any really cold weather - it's usually colder in January and February - I always need plenty of good reading for winter
DeleteAuthor Stella Gibbons above (Woods in Winter) also wrote Cold Comfort Farm - possibly the funniest book written in English!
ReplyDeleteI read her books 'The Matchmaker' and 'The Bachelor' before I read 'Cold Comfort Farm' - I put off reading it because it was so famous. 'Woods in Winter' is my favourite.
Deletethanks for featuring Stella Gibbons here - I love Cold Comfort Farm. I don't mind that she was a bit odd in life - so am I!
DeleteI haven't seen/heard of "Dramatic Murder." Must check that one out!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, more books to add to my list. Thank you for always sharing what you are reading.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Nice lot of library books! I just found out that the bookmobile is starting to come back to my area! I might just stop in so that it is used.
