Brownie-Guide badges are all different colours. I sowed 14 onto her Brownie sash for EGD this week - probably a years worth! I try to use cottons the same colour as the edges of the badges. There were two different yellows, three different blues as well as pink edged and red.
Once upon a time I had a huge collection of different colours cottons but at some time I didn't have room for them all in my sewing box and must have got rid. So had to use the best match I could find.
Anyway, they are all on ready for the new term in September.

Well done Grandma! I'm sure your granddaughter will be pleased with that.
ReplyDeleteI have a reasonable collection of cotton's but often not quite the one I need !

I hope sewing onto a sash was easier than sewing badges onto sleeves which I did for years for beavers and scouts, both thankfully grown out of now. Swimming badges onto towels was the easiest. I have a huge range of cotton threads and still try to pick up reels of Sylko when I find them, at £1 a reel still cheaper than the ghastly polywhatsit thread. Also Sylko thicker and much nicer to work with. Make the most of those lovely young g.children, they soon turn into teenagers and are off into the world. Sandra.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbour son has just given me his scouts blanket, and loads of badges to add, a task I have done for the past few years.
ReplyDeleteWell done all badge-stitching Grans out there! The Brownies and Cubs seem to have a badge for everything these days. Did you see those youngsters with their Wolf Head on the Repair Shop last week "I bet there's a Repair Shop badge" I said. And there was!
ReplyDeleteso much more attractive than the single colour on black badges of my day.
ReplyDeleteI only had to sew on swimming badges for my two sons. The badges look very neat. I too got rid of lots of embroidery and sewing stuff when we moved here and downsized. My eyes aren't good enough for fine work anymore and I only ever sew on buttons or take up hems now and don't need lots of coloured threads. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteWell done. I have grown out of badge sewing thank goodness. Lillie made an application for a chief scout yesterday, or something like that. The trip to Portugal went off well.
ReplyDeleteYou’ve reminded me I’ve got a thread “plait” in the drawer, made up of threads of all colours - I’d forgotten all about it, very useful when working with hems and buttons of different colours.
ReplyDeleteWell done. I used to hate sewing on badges - swimming, gymnastics, judo, trampolining, Scouts - so you've done a really good job. EGD will be so pleased and all ready to earn some more.
ReplyDeleteMy Mum used to hate sewing all my Brownie and then Guide badges onto my uniforms, I almost felt guilty for earning them. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat's a work of patience - I'm such a rubbish nanny that I probably would have glued them on 😉
ReplyDeleteAlison in Devon x
I admittedly was a lazy mom and used Stitch Magic for patches, sold right at the Girl Scout Council store, and just ironed on for my girls. Her sash looks terrific. What a kind thing to do.
ReplyDeleteYou are sweet. I hope she gave you a big hug!
ReplyDeleteI still have my girl scout sash of patches from when I was a kid. I think one of the first things our girl scout leader taught us was how to sew on patches ourselves. They might not look as neat as yours but they are still on there! ;)
ReplyDeleteYour EGD has earned lots of badges. Well done. You must be very proud of her. Her sash looks lovely with the patches sewn on to perfection.
ReplyDeleteThey are much more colourful than they used to be..and bigger. when 8 was a brownie the badges went on your sleeves.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwww!!! This reminds me of my Girl Scout sash & badges from years ago. Sweet memories. Love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh, this brings back memories, are the badges still as stiff as all get out and almost impossible to get the needle through?
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone above for comments - yes the badges are stiff and difficult to sew on! I've had a big gap from sewing on badges for me and Colin as Cub Scout Leaders, son as a Cub and Scout and daughters for Brownies and Guides. The YGD was a Rainbow but the leaders all left - I hope she'll be a Brownie or even a Cub Scout now girls are allowed in soon.
ReplyDeleteSewing my badges on was a full time occupation! I was just one badge away from Queen's Guide when my troop disbanded.
ReplyDeleteWell done sewing on the badges. That was one task I really did not enjoy.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Considering how thick and awkward those badges are to sew on this is quite an accomplishment, brava!
