This Was The Week

After yesterdays post which looked back to an August post of 2018 I thought I'd do the same layout for this week.

Enjoying................The return of lovely summer weather, but I might not say that if it gets above 30℃ next week!

Reading............................ Finished the last few pages of 'Scandalize my Name' by Fiona Sinclair, which is a British Library Crime Classic reprint from 1960. A good story once I got into it, I almost gave up as the first chapter was a bit confusing but after that it was good.
Then I zoomed through 'Death at The White Hart' by Chris Chibnall - his first crime novel but he is well known for writing for TV including Dr Who, Broadchurch, Torchwood, Life on Mars etc. This was very well written and very modern. Now dithering over which library book to read next.

Watching..................Countdown for brain workout!  The Great British Sewing Bee to be amazed at their sewing skills. The first of the Cricket 100 on Tuesday evening. Two series of 6 programmes of  New Zealand/Irish TV collaboration  police drama called 'The Gone' that ended with a cliff-hanger but if there will be series 3 hasn't been announced, which is very strange after such an odd ending.

Harvesting...................the last 3 very small pathetic aubergines, baby plum tomatoes, probably the last of the cucumbers, 2 courgettes from the one plant that has sprung back to life, a fig or two most days, last of the French climbing beans, first sweetcorn cob and two not quite ripe GIANT tomatoes - 8 ounces each-  that were so heavy they broke the plant! These are the ones I use for chutney/relish. As soon as they are red they'll be skinned and popped in the freezer.

Gardening...........................Filling the garden waste bin yet again. Half from the rest of the Yew hedge and then grass cuttings and bits removed from the greenhouse plants and many weeds from round the back of the heating oil tank.   .

Exercising..................................I think there were 11 of us at Keep Moving Group. We looked through the list of people who no longer come and wondered how to rustle up some more folk although a few are away on holiday. We have two new ladies who are aged 80 and 87! Our oldest lady was 90 last month.

Sorting........................Photos of  a church for a blog post for next week.

Spending.......................This months "second-hand book allowance" on a book I read about on the Furrowed Middlebrow blog - it's always dangerous reading Scott's blog, he mentions so many interesting old books.

Getting Cross with.......................the problems with google photos app and the Photofunstudio link  so I'm having to go the long way round to get photos from my camera to the blog. I'm not sure if it's bad connection or user ignorance!

Food Shopping.....................The usual quick trip to Aldi and Asda and returning library books, nowhere else and soon home again.

Visiting...............A local event which I'll write about next week.

Hearing............ Combines across the fields and tractors with trailers full of wheat going by as the harvest is in full swing again.

Have a lovely weekend whatever you have happening.

Back Soon

  1. A list is a good way to remind yourself of everything achieved and enjoyed, I find a weekly review makes me feel better, I have achieved things! 87 and 90 year olds still exercising and keeping mobile reminds us why we all need to do it if we possibly can. I've recently bought a hand grip strengthener from Lidl for a few pounds, goodness it's hard work which is why I need to do it.

    1. I'd not heard of hand grip strengthener , had to look them up. Seems like a good idea.

  2. Those are whopping tomatoes. I was given several cherry tomato plants but they ripen so quickly and I prefer Moneymaker, which is what I will concentrate on next year. Cucumbers have been doing well though - picked two big ones again today. Still lots coming for young Rosie to harvest. She LOVES the greenhouse :)

A good week for you by the sound of it. Lots achieved.

    1. There are two more the same in the greenhouse and then several just a bit smaller. They won't take me long to skin and to save 3 or 4 lb to do lots of jars of red chutney

  3. A productive harvest.
I take my camera card out to copy photos into the computer.

    1. I could do that but using a linking lead is easier if the google app is working properly

  4. You have had a productive week. Your tomatoes are bigger than ours!

    1. Special huge variety makes it easy for chutney/relish making

  5. It's good to hear that older people are coming along to your Keep Moving group. I think there are many, many younger folk who could do with such a group, too.

    1. Most of us are between 70 and 80 I think. We need a few more people to keep our costs low.

  6. A busy, productive week all round! I’m making a baby quilt which is keeping me busy. Catriona

  8. I'm happy that I can now watch episodes of The Great British Sewing Bee here and it's quite enjoyable. I watch it as I work on my cross stitch projects.
I'm reading the Richard Jury series by Martha Grimes - although I should say I am re-reading them as I realized that I have read them in the past but can never remember "who done it" so I'm reading them again. ;)

    1. It's a shame they have to do everything so quickly on Sewing Bee but I guess it would be too slow for TV at normal sewing speed

  9. Your tomatoes look really good. Mine are pathetic in comparison. No blight this year because I bought (new to me) blight resistant plants. The cherry tomatoes were numerous, but they all split before getting fully red.
The only plants that grew really well are zucchini.

    1. So annoying when tomatoes split. I always slow down watering as they get bigger

  10. I'm curious about the method you use to get photos to the blog. I usually just upload them directly into my post while composing in Blogger. Why do you use Photofunstudio, and what is that?

    1. Really I have no clue what I'm doing most of the time! I use a connection lead rather than taking the card in and out of the camera.
Photofun studio is something that came with my camera - it stores the photos in folders. If the google app worked properly it transfers photos from camera or phone really easily. At the moment I have to go into 'This PC' then 'Devices' and then find the photos and copy them to the laptop.
I'm sure I'm ignorant about an easier way - no one to teach me!

  11. Tomatoes weighing over half a pound each, no wonder the poor plant broke!

Sometimes it's good to look back on old posts for ideas for new ones. I hope you have a good weekend. :-)

    1. I'm glad tomatoes will ripen indoors - it would have been annoying to have had these two green as I don't want to make green tomato chutney

  12. What is the name of those huge tomatoes?

    1. They're called "Super Mama" a giant plum variety - less seeds so ideal for chutney making

  13. I like the list-style post! The tomatoes naturally turn and break the plant! I had the same problem last week with the peppers, I had to prop them up with sticks and tie them together, they were very large and almost broke in the wind!

  14. Those really are whopping tomatoes. My favourites this year have been Sungold cherry tomatoes but Gray snapped the top off when tying it in so we didn't get that many off it. We only had the one plant as well 😏

  15. A pretty good week. Those tomatoes look like a good size. We didn't grow any but when we went to the sunflower field today they had a little stall with homegrown cherry tomatoes on and we bought some. Yum!

  16. Nice post, harvesting here is coming by leaps and bounds.

    God bless.
