December 8th

I picked up this book from a yard sale last year. Home and Country was the name of the national Women's Institute monthly magazine issued from 1919 right up to 2006  (I think) when it changed it's name to WI Life.

Until Home and Country magazine was set up, WI news had been included in The Landswoman, a magazine for the land army set up in Jan 1918. The National Federation of Women's Institute (NFWI) periodical was established in 1919, initially reporting on the exhibition that had taken place in the Caxton Hall and became the official publication of the NFWI. Its first editor was Miss Alice Williams and Miss Mowbray Laming is business manager. Both resigned in 1920 due to ill health and Mrs Nugent Harris succeeded Miss Williams. The Subcommittee was set up in 1920 to supervise the policy, publishing and management of the paper. The publication was issued on a monthly basis thereafter, gaining most of its funding from subscriptions and purchases in addition to sale of advertising space.

We get a copy of WI Life  - 8 Issues a year- included with our annual subscriptions, but I'm afraid it's not of much interest to me as it's full of adverts for Holidays and everyone featured in it seems to be very wealthy and smart and posh!! I do the Suduko, skim through the pages and then add it to the recycling.

Years ago the magazine was an extra that was paid for separately - a much better idea  in my opinion. We also get a much smaller monthly magazine from our regional office - which tells us about things happening in East Suffolk WI's - more interesting and local businesses advertise in it which is of more use to me than Cruise Companies!

The reason I'm writing about it in Photos in Advent is so I can show you this page.............

which starts by saying "there won't be  turkey on many Christmas tables this year". It might be the same in 2022 -if what they say on TV and Radio is true - a shortage this time due to Avian Flu. ...IF!
The page above actually comes from a few years after the war ended, rationing and shortages went on for a long time.

The question is will children's eyes "sparkle at simple treats, served gaily" this year!!

The week is rushing along as usual.

I had a health check with someone from One Life Suffolk

ABOUT ONELIFE SUFFOLK

OneLife Suffolk

OneLife Suffolk is a partnership between Leeds Beckett University and MoreLife, commissioned by Suffolk County Council. Our head office is based in Ipswich and we have offices in Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds with services that cover the county.

BP was sky high but it's always gone up and down at random. I ought to go and get it checked out at the doctors, especially as I  only have one kidney. Weight was Too Much - knew that, blood sugars OK, cholesterol a teeny bit high. Heart age 68 which is what I will be in April.  Oh well. I still reckon it will be cancer that sees me off in the end- there was so much of  it on both sides of the family.

The exercise class had been run by Spot Wellbeing

turns out they are going to "facilitate" the group for 12 weeks, provide refreshments but won't lead the exercise. So we followed some instructions on a piece of paper -read out by one of the "old Men". We all had to sign a disclaimer!

I really wonder why there are all these different groups, which overlap in places. Where does the funding come from and why not add all the funding together and join all the organisations together and save money on websites and printing.

Mine is not to reason why!

I brought the Christmas tree box in from the garage, fitted it altogether and got it decorated with all the silver bits, which hadn't been out of the box for many years, then the green things and when that wasn't really enough I added red as well. Over the 40+ years of decorating a Christmas tree I've gathered all sort of dangling things, some are quite old now, several are home made but the majority have come from charity shops and Christmas Fayres.

The photo is awful - it looks better in real life and in the dark! But it'll do.

December 6th

In a village not far from my own is a small gift and homewares shop with a café, and every year they go all Christmassy.

I popped in to have a look. It was crowded and the queue for the café was very long. I managed to get a few photos without people in the way although my phone camera doesn't really capture it very well.

So many pretty things...........

Every colour decoration you can think off - looking so pretty and cheerful......and quite expensive!

So my hint would be to look in charity shops first - a much cheaper way to change your colour scheme. I found a bag of  about a dozen green baubles for 50p this year.
