No Chance of Abandoning This Book Unfinished

The most recent crime story by Ann Cleeves isn't a Vera in Northumberland or a Jimmy Perez set in Shetland.

Introducing Matthew Venn with stories featuring one of my favourite parts of the country - the North coast of Devon and there's a map.......................love a book with a map!

Of course he isn't an ordinary copper with an ordinary family, but I won't give anything away.

A body has been found on the beach, a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck. Then a girl with Downs syndrome goes missing and  both cases seem to be connected to The Woodyard, a day centre that helps people with learning difficulties as well as being a home for  art classes, counseling services and many other community events.

It's all a bit too close to his home life for comfort.

I wonder if this will be a TV programme sometime.

  1. I love detective stories but I find it difficult to put the books down and the house goes to wrack and ruin in the mean time.

  2. That sounds like my kind of book. I'll see if they've got the digital version to download.

  5. I must look out for this one as I love her writing and I know what you mean, she's unputdownable!

I've just read The Salt Path at breakneck speed (the joys of being poorly!) Did you mention it on here? If you've not read it yet, I highly recommend, though you will need a hanky in parts.

    1. I think it's on Sue's reading list for last year. I know I loved it too, a brilliant book and now one of my favourites to be re-read.

  8. I love Vera - never read it but watch the TV series. Somehow I can never get into crime stories in book form but love to watch them when they make a TV series. Enjoy your read.

  9. I have read this and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is good reading books about an area you know well- which is part of the reason I so loved Vera. I went to a talk Ann Cleeves have recently and the Long Call is definitely the first in a new series.

  12. Excellent! I must add this book to my library reservation list. I wonder what it is about maps that we find so fascinating, they certainly do it for me, always have. Polly looks well and truly settled in front of that stove.

  14. I need to look for this one. I'm in need of a good read. Had to give up on the last book I started. Too much unnecessary verbiage for my taste.

  15. I enjoyed this new series start. Looking forward to the next installment. I loved the Shetland series, but it took me a book or two to warm up to Vera. Now I love those too.

  16. Sounds great! Love a map too! She had another series with some bird watching/detective main characters, George and Molly (2 or 3 books?) but they never really got me. I shall look out for this one!

  19. I haven't read any of her work, but shall bear it in mind. It's amazing how many slots I can find to read in a busy day once I really get hooked on a story. Arilx

  24. So wonderful to find a great book!!!!

I've seen the tv programs of the first 2 you mentioned. Liked "Shetland" more than "Vera." I imagine this one will be made into a series too.

  28. I wonder if a tv series will be made of this one? I love reading books, but I don't generally read the detective genre, so it would be great if a series was made.

  31. Sounds interesting - I have never read anything by her. And I don't believe I've seen either of those series either. Of course I've heard of Vera, but never tracked it down to watch.
