Two Cheering Bargains

£2 spent while I was in Stowmarket will fill up some more of my waiting hours and cheered me up considerably!

The East Anglian Daily Times had a stall on the market with their bargain offer of EADT and Ipswich Star Newspapers plus a bottle of water, bag of popcorn and packet of crisps for £1. Then the Barnardo's charity shop had these as-new Persephone books for 50p each.

The Thursday EADT has extra puzzle pages and would normally be 90p which means all the other things were 10p. The books are Greenbanks by Dorothy Whipple and Patience by John Coates. (one of their few books by male authors)Somewhere in the last couple of years I lost the little book I had in my bag with it's list of all the Persephone books  read/owned so it was annoying to find when I got back to the caravan and looked in my book-of-books-read I'd read Greenbanks but no idea if it's in a box in store and I can't remember reading it anyway. I've not read the other one.
In 2019 I saw some Persephone books at the Stowmarket  Oxfam shop(only bought one), so there must be someone in Stowmarket who buys or gets given these brand new. They even still have their bookmarks.
If you don't know about Persephone Books, HERE is a post I wrote a few years ago and THIS
is a link to their website. From which I see they are moving their shop from London down to Bath and not publishing any new books in April like they usually do.

  1. Bargains indeed! Until everything is unpacked and put away, I'm not letting myself buy any CS stuff. I think those newspaper deals are great value - the Eastern Daily Press does similar offers, and I have often bought them if I'm spending a hot summer day in Norwich. I hesitate to ask how the solicitors are getting on...

    1. You're right, best not to ask about solicitors. One day I'll be able to say it's happening but no idea when.

    2. As you are living in Norfolk, Angela, you need to be reading the EDP everyday to keep up with local news, what is happening in the county and local events, (that's if you are not already doing so). It is one of the best regional newspapers in the country. I hope you are enjoying being here in Norfolk full time now.

  3. Reading about Persephone books reminded me that I used to receive their twice-yearly magazine and haven’t had it for a while, so I went to their website to subscribe again (£2 for 2 issues, and also available online in their archive for free). While I was there I noticed they have a new catalogue coming out in Autumn this year!

    1. I didn't notice about the catalogue - good news. I've not had a Biennial for a while either - don't think I'll subscribe as all I need to know is which books they have coming

    1. It's good to hear the funeral went as well as possible for a sad time.
Sun is out here but still a chilly wind.

  5. Wow that is a bargain! Our Oxfam charges £2.49 minimum for any paperback and considerably more for Persephone editions.
May have to move east .......

    1. Yes they would have been a LOT more than 50p in many charity shops - some check prices online - I guess it depends on their volunteers and how quickly they want to move things along

  6. Lovely to get a bargain. Our Oxfam shop has a book sale every Saturday. Books outside are 30p each or 4 for £1. Don't always find something I want, but I love looking. xx

    1. Good to hear that about Oxfam reducing prices as I know some shops don't - they just send everything for pulping rather than try and sell them for less.

  8. Brilliant bargains, and another car boot sale tomorrow ... I am green with envy. Our local car boot sale doesn't start until the end of May :-(

    1. I actually have a choice of two but it would seem daft to drive 10 miles when I'm right on the site just 5 minutes walk away!
I think the Saturday/wednesday one is not starting until June or July

  9. Those are wonderful bargains you have gotten. It always feels good when we find a great deal like that doesn't it? How nice to have two more Persephone books to add to your collection at such a good price. Enjoy your extra puzzle pages!

    1. It's good to have some puzzle pages to keep the brain active while I'm waiting. The puzzles on a Thursday are a bit different too which is good

  10. I love used book stores. I'd never heard about the Persephone books. That's a very interesting marketing strategy!

    1. They only reprint 5 a year and make them look very classy- a big temptation although I've managed to acquire several without buying one new!
