June Country Days on the 2nd of the Month

June - my favourite month of the year, meteorologically the start of summer (or  wait to the 21st for the astronomical start)

It is thought that June is named after the goddess Juno or possibly from Iuniores which was the lower level of the legislature in the constitution of ancient Rome.

Calm weather in June, sets the farmer in tune

 The weather pattern for June often alternates between spells of stormy weather and shorter periods of dry calm. The farmers prefer calm and warm with night-time dew to speed up crop growth and statistically June is England's sunniest month.

Other people in the past have also enjoyed June and written poems

Christina Rossetti said in her poem                    Summer

If the year would stand
Still at June for ever,
With no further growth on land
Nor further flow of river.
If all nights were shortest nights
And longest days were all seven,
This might be a merrier world
To my mind to live in.

JUNE

Mine is the Month of Roses; yes, and mine
  The Month of Marriages!  All pleasant sights
And scents, the fragrance of the blossoming vine,
  The foliage of the valleys and the heights.
Mine are the longest days, the loveliest nights;
  The mower's scythe makes music to my ear;
I am the mother of all dear delights;
  I am the fairest daughter of the year.

From 'The Poets Calendar' By Longfellow

And another written for children by Irene F Pawsey

Month of leaves,
Month of roses;
Gardens full
Of dainty posies;
Skies of blue,
Hedgerows gay,
Meadows sweet
With the new mown hay.

Flowery banks,
A-drone with bees,
Dreaming cattle
Under trees:
Song-birds pipe
A merry tune—
This is summer,
This is June.

And way, way back in 1557 Thomas Tusser said in his Five hundred points of good husbandry

In June get thy wedehoke, they knife and thy glove,
And wede out such wede as the corn doth not love;
Slack no time weding, for darth nor for cheape;
Thy corn shall reward it, or ever thou reap.

I think this means - keep weeding that garden!

  1. You've reminded me to research Thomas Tusser. His rhymes are very true

    1. I'll see what other bits I can find for each month.
      I'm sure when we were buying and selling secondhand smallholding books I had a copy - but it's long gone

  2. I do like Angela Harding's artwork. I have often had Advent calendars by her from the National Trust. The only thing I don't care for in June is we turn the corner and the downward slip into the longer nights begins.

    1. Have to think there are more days of June when the days get longer than when the days get shorter!

  3. "One years seed, seven years weed". That is an old country saying. I believe that rushes seeds can live for sixty years in the ground.

    1. Sounds about right for some things. I've less weeding this year as I'm not growing much at all

  4. June here can be hot with low humidity, very nice, or endless rain. This year seems to be about rain.

    1. Oh dear, the long range forecast here is for very mixed, but with weather systems coming in from the west we often get the best weather here in the east

  5. June can be a lovely month. It can also be cold! Good advice about weeding - the weeds pop up as soon as we turn our backs.

  6. Up to now our June weather has been very strange, we had high winds, rain and minimal sun yesterday and then today, after a glorious start, we had torrential rain. Now it's blowy and sunny ... so the washing is on the line.

    Angela Harding's illustrations in A Year Unfolding' are lovely aren't they.

  7. I enjoyed the June poetry. June - potentially such a lovely month, but a little disconcerting that we are hurtling toward the longest day.

  9. Let's hope for a warm and sunny June with an occasional shower for the plantings.
    Our May was cooler than normal, and it rained nearly every weekend.

  11. Our temps are bouncing up and down, so some days it's the heat on and other days I'm ready to crank up the A/C. The perfect days are when I can just open all of the windows and enjoy the breezes.
