It's a good year for the roses - I'm sure that's a line of a song? There are 6 different ones here and I've no idea what they are. I only know that there's white, red and shades of pink and orange. There's another that I have to keep cutting down as it's really in a wrong place. Three are climbers. My sister gave me a yellow rose in a pot for my birthday. I don't think its a miniature - the flowers are bigger - those miniature roses never last long for me.
I think it's wonderful that many people know exactly what varieties they have growing but I'm not a massive fan, and have never gone out to actually buy any anywhere I've lived and I never know how much I should be cutting back each year. But it is nice, at this time of year, to be able to bring in a few now and again.
This is the biggest and most showy of all the roses, it's in the front border so gets the most sun.

I was going to say, it's an Elvis Costello song ... I much prefer this Elvis to the 'King'. I've never been a fan of roses, some of them are really beautiful to look at, but I doubt that I would ever plant any for myself.
ReplyDeleteThree of mine in the front border have flowers, but the one in the back garden has no blooms at all this year.
ReplyDeleteI too have unknown roses in our back garden, I'm not a fan but hubby loves them.
ReplyDeleteRoses give so much colour and beauty, and if they're the 'right' sort, intoxicating scent.
ReplyDeleteHave listen to George Jones version of the song, truly emotional. Your roses look lovely, enjoy their blooms. Jan D
ReplyDeleteI’ve only really got into roses in recent years and so I’m still learning about them. They are easy to grow and I wished I’d grown them sooner. However, I was almost put off when I first started growing them as the deer came into the garden ( at our previous house) and ate the tops off all of my newly planted roses! That was soul destroying!
ReplyDeleteIf you or anyone else is interested, David Austin do a series of modules, easy to follow and I only stumbled across this yesterday and it’s easy reading::

I love your red rose! Enjoy today! Sal π
Your rose bush out front is lovely. I've never seen a single bush produce that many roses.
ReplyDeleteI know nothing about roses and only one single rose grows on my property. It was planted by my late uncle. It has sharp thorns, is very dark red and has no scent. I've cut it to the ground several times, but it keeps on growing and always produces a few small roses.
Oh, the brilliant red in the roses in the front border!! How wonderful for someone to see when they pass your home. Eye candy! ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI don't know the name of most of my plants and flowers but I can still enjoy them when they bloom. I hadn't heard that song before.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who used to visit old cemeteries for the express purpose of gathering rose cuttings. They have a fragrance not found in the new hybrids.
ReplyDeleteI saw Elvis Costello at Glastonbury in 1989. I think this year is the best year ever for flowers especially roses.
ReplyDeleteFortunately, roses are quite tough so they'll generally take a fair amount of mistreatment! (Although three of ours died this year -- mostly because they're in deep shade beneath trees that grew up behind them, I think.)
ReplyDeleteThank you to everyone for comments about roses - it really is a good year for them
ReplyDeleteNo roses here. I killed the one that was by the back porch by trying to transplant it.
ReplyDeleteI have five rose bushes plus a climber but don't know any of their names. They are just now starting to open their blooms so we are a bit behind you.
ReplyDeleteI love roses, but have not had much luck in getting them to keep growing.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I started playing that Elvis song in my head as soon as I read that line! We have not had great success growing healthy roses. Yellows are my favorite!
ReplyDeleteI find roses too temperamental, but have one red rose bush that the birds planted. It requires nothing from me other than cutting winter kill, so we get along fine.
