June - my favourite month of the year, meteorologically the start of summer (or wait to the 21st for the astronomical start)
It is thought that June is named after the goddess Juno or possibly from Iuniores which was the lower level of the legislature in the constitution of ancient Rome.
The weather pattern for June often alternates between spells of stormy weather and shorter periods of dry calm. The farmers prefer calm and warm with night-time dew to speed up crop growth and statistically June is England's sunniest month.

Other people in the past have also enjoyed June and written poems
Month of leaves,
Month of roses;
Gardens full
Of dainty posies;
Skies of blue,
Hedgerows gay,
Meadows sweet
With the new mown hay.
Flowery banks,
A-drone with bees,
Dreaming cattle
Under trees:
Song-birds pipe
A merry tune—
This is summer,
This is June.
And way, way back in 1557 Thomas Tusser said in his Five hundred points of good husbandry
You've reminded me to research Thomas Tusser. His rhymes are very true
ReplyDeleteI'll see what other bits I can find for each month.
DeleteI'm sure when we were buying and selling secondhand smallholding books I had a copy - but it's long gone
I do like Angela Harding's artwork. I have often had Advent calendars by her from the National Trust. The only thing I don't care for in June is we turn the corner and the downward slip into the longer nights begins.
ReplyDeleteHave to think there are more days of June when the days get longer than when the days get shorter!
Delete"One years seed, seven years weed". That is an old country saying. I believe that rushes seeds can live for sixty years in the ground.
ReplyDeleteSounds about right for some things. I've less weeding this year as I'm not growing much at all
DeleteJune here can be hot with low humidity, very nice, or endless rain. This year seems to be about rain.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, the long range forecast here is for very mixed, but with weather systems coming in from the west we often get the best weather here in the east
DeleteJune can be a lovely month. It can also be cold! Good advice about weeding - the weeds pop up as soon as we turn our backs.
ReplyDeleteI need to do a bit of weeding - in between watching tennis!
DeleteUp to now our June weather has been very strange, we had high winds, rain and minimal sun yesterday and then today, after a glorious start, we had torrential rain. Now it's blowy and sunny ... so the washing is on the line.
ReplyDeleteAngela Harding's illustrations in A Year Unfolding' are lovely aren't they.
The long range forecast is for mixed all month. First two days here have been fine and sunny - lovely .
DeleteI enjoyed the June poetry. June - potentially such a lovely month, but a little disconcerting that we are hurtling toward the longest day.
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Sssshhhh don't mention the downhill bit at the end of the month!
DeleteThat illustration is a beauty. June always shocks me -- the year half over, the best part beginning!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for a good summer, I've forgotten what last years was like!
DeleteLet's hope for a warm and sunny June with an occasional shower for the plantings.
ReplyDeleteOur May was cooler than normal, and it rained nearly every weekend.
Yes a warm and sunny June would be good although I expect it will be very mixed as usual
DeleteI love June too, Sue, and I always go by the meteorological calendar as well....as does our land it seems. ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteOur temps are bouncing up and down, so some days it's the heat on and other days I'm ready to crank up the A/C. The perfect days are when I can just open all of the windows and enjoy the breezes.
ReplyDeleteAny idea what has happened to Rachel? Not answering email either. Please delete this comment if you'd rather not say, but my email address is in my profile.
ReplyDeleteI love that Summer Moon Walk picture! I was just weeding over the weekend, so I'm glad to know I'm following Thomas Tusser's advice. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great illustration!. Love the poems as well. Did a bit of weeding today and more needs to be done as well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Beautiful illustration! Warm greetings from a 68 year old retired lady living in Montreal, Canada. My paternal grandparents were born in Kent, England.
ReplyDeleteLove these posts. I can't believe we're already in June!
ReplyDeleteI love it because of all the June babies in my life! Well, they are all adults, but lots of parties in June. A great way to start the summer!
